    Late-Night Dining

I finally made it to Amsterdam Falafel Saturday around 2 am accompanied by my ex and a friend glued to my side to make sure I didn't do anything dumb. There was a LOT of Champagne involved. Got a falafel which I slathered with the hot red pepper paste. It was so hot that I wished it had the numbing effect you guys rave about at the various Chinese food places. Instead I sat there drunk with swollen burning lips. Nice. I think I liked it.
  2. I was there last night too. I love Proof (and I'd say that even if I weren't friends with hmmboy). When I entered around 8 pm, my first thought was "where are all the people?" jiveturk21, if you thought it was crowded last night, you definitely don't want to show up at 8 pm on a Friday! There were people present; it just wasn't the zoo it has been on my last few visits. I do agree, though, that meals tend to be a bit pricey for the portions involved. Still, I really love the food offered so I continue to return. While we waited for our table, my two friends and I ordered a selection of three cheeses. Not a clunker in the bunch; I'd just suggest offering more bread to go with said cheeses. We asked for, and received, more. Last night was my first time trying the ricotta flatbread which a friend ordered. It was nicely flavored with flecks of salt dotting the creamy cheese. We really enjoyed this as well as my other friend's meatballs and my half portion of gnocchi which are presently offered with leeks and chanterelles. Awesome! My friends were fighting me for the last bits of sauce. I'm a sucker for the hanger steak, medium rare. My friends took my menu suggestions of the chicken and the sablefish. All of the plates went back to the kitchen empty. Desserts are not my favorite part of meals at Proof, to be honest. We were pretty full anyway so we passed on this course. The pre-tip bill was, I believe, $160 which didn't include the cheese or our first round of wine in the bar area (another $50 plus tip). We are just medium rollers, I guess, so this is somewhat of splurge unless expense accounts come into play.
  3. Where can I get a good falafel in the Tysons vicinity?
  4. Here's the thing: my pronunciation was correct. I know how to say Viognier. The server did not, but seemed to think she did. My two friends cracked up when she left our table. By the way, the menu is all over the place. Asian-fusion in one dish, Mexican in another and then pasta too.
  5. I went (not my idea) and it was a mixed bag. Huge space that was mostly empty. A strip steak that was surprisingly decent. Shrimp that were not. The service was not good. One example: I ordered a glass of Viognier and my pronunciation was corrected by the waitress.
  6. Komi doesn't accept groups larger than four so unless you can ditch a friend (probably not!), it is out. I second or third the Proof recommendation. Maybe try pizza one night?
  7. Is Busboys and Poets too far from Dupont for your meeting?
  8. Hinrich is certainly better than decent. To bring this back on topic, I sat next to a couple playing footsie in the cafe at Palena so apparently they found it romantic.
  9. There are about six or seven four-tops in the front of the space and then some smaller cocktail tables (maybe four? not sure.) along the left wall. This is in addition to the bar. I wouldn't try to have a big meet-up there on a weekend, but during the week it might work. The food menu consists exclusively of cheeses, cured meats and pates with their accompaniments. A tasty start, but not enough for a meal. I'd love to see Veritas expand its offerings to crostini or similar. The only reasons we left when we did were a desire for more food and the noise.
  10. Two friends and I were also there last night and came away with the same impression. Our ears were ringing by the time we left! But we liked the wine, the cheese, the charcuterie, the space and the service. Really the only thing that struck us as odd was how the prosciutto was served--instead of being laid out in thin slices it came out in one big lump. We tried to be graceful as we pulled the lump apart, but probably failed. Oh, and Waitman's comment about the square containers for condiments and accompaniments was dead on. Fork or no fork, they are just deep enough to make things awkward. Bottom line, though, is that Veritas is a nice addition.
  11. True to my word, I got the similar season-appropriate salad last night and did not share. This time the salad featured haricot verts with the same mixed greens, truffle shavings, ham and truffle vinaigrette. This composition has given me a belated appreciation of salad! My friends and I shared a cheese plate (tasty) so when my medium rare burger arrived, I almost thought "ugh." It was delicious, but I was almost full.
  12. All of the above (lungs were the first to come to mind--blech!) plus cuy and ortolan. Oh, and whale blubber.
  13. How was the service? I was there two Sundays ago for a snack and the service was so absent-minded that I was too frustrated to recount it at the time. The food we ordered and ate was OK, but nothing to rush back for. The price does indeed climb quickly for those very small portions.
  14. Happy Birthday Joe (and Peanut!)!
  15. All I know is that it's in the overhauled Park Bench Pub space and that a glassed-in patio enclosure has been installed on the Ordway side.
  16. Beware the stairs. Glover Park location. Not so bad when you're heading in (up), but on your way out, they tilt forward something fierce. Is there a lawyer in the house?
  17. With apologies to McEnroe, you cannot be serious!
  18. I believe the difference is more egg and the addition to semolina. They seem be packed a little bit less firmly too (a good thing).
