  1. One of the best cocktail bars on the East Coast. Really great drinks, really great vibe. I still remember my visit two years ago, which is amazing as I was completely hammered when I walked in (even more when I left).
  2. Poetic indeed. I texted Rocks last night some additional info, and I am as fascinated by this as I was about when a friend had dinner at Eleven Madison Park, there was a service issue at the beginning, and then they were taken on a magical ride. I found exactly one reference to a similar experience on the internet. The story is on the EMP thread but I dont know how to link to it. This is a similar treasure hunt.
  3. Sure you can copy and paste. I edited the above so as not to put anyone in odd situations with professional colleagues. i am truly amazed by this. I can tell you that he came by the bottle as a gift and that it came from Petrus is damn near unimpeachable. I did some quick research and couldn’t find a thing...like a very cool secret. I can see why a Chateau might do it this way. A gift of a case of Petrus to staff could have significant tax implications (unsure of French personal tax laws) and staff would certainly be enticed to sell their case rather than drink it, as the Chateau might intend with the “gift”. An off label bottling could solve this. i am intrigued by what your group may come back with
  4. A friend had a bottle of something I had never in my life heard of before. He was gifted a bottle of 2009 Saute Loup, which is apparently a small bottling just for people who work at Petrus, with a non-descript label, Pomerol appellation and "Reserve de la Famille" on the label.....that's it. My friend has an extraordinary depth of knowledge and a great palate, and said the wine was stunning and that he, too, had never heard of the wine before. So, has anyone every heard of this before? Does anyone know of other great wineries that bottle very small allotments of a vintage under a different label for staff and workers?
  5. Dinner at my house isn't always free-range this or organic that. Sometimes my wife and I are too busy and it is breakfast again. Don't judge. Last night, however, we were both exhausted and I had worked 15 hour and would be home about 7:30. Text wife: "Need carry out, Thai? Vietnamese?" She responded that my youngest was having a sleepover and they had requested pizza. Fine. Get an order of wings, too. Should have stopped and gotten some Astro Glide before I arrived home. I have had Papa Johns numerous time and it is just shitty, wasted calories but it is pizza and will do in a pinch. They have a model like Bed, Bath and Beyond where there is always 20% off everything, but with them it is 50% off If one of 30 different things happen the previous day and you know the Promo Code. So the order of shitty sustenance arrives and I am handed the receipt. I glanced at it and thought I was reading the receipt incorrectly, so I did something I have never done with carryout before. I got my reading glasses...and then confirmed what I thought was a blurry impossibility. $55.80. This has to be a mistake. I then did another thing I haven't done in years....I looked at the receipt detail. Two shitty Cheese Pizzas, $15 each. Sixteen crappy wings, $18. $3 delivery fee. $4.80 Tax......et voila, $55.80 Another first occurred next, as it flashed through my mind not to tip on top of this outrage. Alas, I knew he had nothing to do with it, tipped $12, and ended up spending $67.80 on two Papa John's pizzas and some "fit for human consumption" grade wings. Had my wife been in possession of the magic promo code it would have been cut in half to around $31, but she didn't and it never even occurred to us that we were doing the "culinary" (term used super loosely) equivalent of buying a new car for more than sticker price. Fuck you, Papa John's, and never again.
  6. Drove past the restaurant yesterday and there is a now awning that says "High Street" (I think) and a sub-heading Asian Street Food and Craft beer. That's right up my alley, but the space is so small I don't know how they can do the volume with these things as the focus, and parking makes "carry-out" a problem.
  7. One more thing: 3) Voter registration is automatic at age 18. Voting will be on Saturdays. Early voting available EVERYWHERE one week prior to election day. Allow for a tax deduction for voting as an incentive. Virginia is voting tomorrow, and I think its voter turnout is fairly normal....which is to say an embarasssment. A quick look at the voting History since 2000, an embarassing 57.7% of eligible voters (CVAP) voted in the Presidential elections. 4 in 10 could not vote, or could not be bothered to vote. Even worse....non-Presidential elections! 30.1% of CVAP voted during "off-year" elections. That's just appalling.
  8. I have two novel ideas: 1) Don't outlaw any guns, but make bullets super fucking expensive. Bullets can only be sold at gun ranges for use outside of a gun range, and all sales will be registered and tracked. Set strict limits on how many bullets can be taken from the gun range. That number should be super small, and bullet should cost A LOT of money, say $100. I don't know any hunter that takes more than a few bullets, or shotgun shells, when going hunting. Inside of a gun range, bullets should be super cheap. I want people to practice shooting and become proficient marksmen. That skill should be "honed" in a licensed and registered gun range. And the whole "militia/ protection from the federal boot argument" -> raid the armory, just like our Founding Fathers did, when you are ready for the uprising. Now, this could adversely effect the poor in rural communities who hunt for sustenance. I say, "bow hunt". Use a crossbow if you want, and feel free to shoot deer, or any other game animal, year-round with a bow or crossbow. ETA: Also, the 2nd Amendment says absolutely nothing about bullets. 2) Gun owners should be forced to buy insurance and provide the insurance documentation when purchasing a gun. This is a perfect "free market" solution. Let the for-profit insurance companies, and their super smart actuaries, put a "price" on gun ownership. I am sure one or two guns would be relatively inexpensive, depending on what the gun is. You want to purchase a shit ton of "assualt rifles". That's going to cost you.
  9. I am heading there this afternoon and will certainly help skew the demo to old and white. will report on what I encounter.
  10. I am going to be all over this. The single greatest meal I ever had was prepared for me by Masaya at the Sushi Taro Omakase counter. Five years later, I can recite the entire progression of that meal. Cara and I will be there in Tuesday, and I'll be sure to tell her that Don says "Hi" since he neglected to do it in person several years ago at Toki Underground!
  11. The Grist Mill Restaurant in the Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC is seeking an experienced line cook to join our PM culinary team. The perfect candidate will have several years of cooking experience in either independent restaurants or hotels. Are you tired of working long hours, in difficult conditions, for little pay? Do you want to practice your craft in a positive and team oriented environment? Are you creative and passionate about cooking? Do you want to work in a stable and respectful environment? If so, this may be ideal for you. Executive Chef Will Artley is looking to bolster his staff with the addition of a serious culinary professional. Competitive pay, Healthcare, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, 401k, paid holidays, Vacations, and Personal Time off are just a start! The shift is usually 2:30 until 11pm during the week, and 3 until 11:30pm on weekends. Please email your resume if you are interested in joining our team to brian.reymann@hilton.com
  12. The Foxes winning the EPL last year was truly astounding, and the story of their 3 year run would be unbelievable if pitched for a movie. Many have compared RB Leipzig's rise to the top of the Bundesliga this year to be similar. It's not. You are correct, there is no salary cap in soccer, and the richest teams are almost always the best. No one had heard of Leipzig four years ago, when they were a middling club in the fourth division of German soccer. Then they were purchased, built a new training facility, spent a lot of money on organizational structure and on the pitch talent. They marched right through every division and now find themselves at the top of the Bundesliga table. The RB now attached to the Leipzig club stands for Red Bull. LCFC had no such infusion of cash, and what happened last year may never be replicated again in any major soccer division
  13. Just try them all and let us know which was the best option. Radiologists can scale up better than most doctors and can afford it!
  14. I think about Restaurant Eve quite a bit. Still a fantastic dining destination that has been slightly overlooked with all of the new restaurants and happenings over the last few years. Still outstanding.
  15. I have been to the original Chuy's and their first satellite restaurant in Austin on numerous occasions, albeit 20 years ago. Loved it. I really enjoy Mexican food and Tex-Mex iterations. The singular meal I had at Chuy's Fairfax last year was the worst meal I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Absolutely crap, with every dish oversalted to the point of being inedible.
  16. Thanks Don. This is a work in progress, as any leadership transition is. First, Chris was a wonderful asset in the six years that he lead our kitchen. I can speak for the management and ownership of the hotel that we are beyond happy for him that he was able to move on to a job that affords him more time with his family and his side business. We wish him nothing but the best and he will always be part of our family, and a friend. We are truly delighted to have a Chef of Will's caliber overseeing the next evolution of our restaurant. It is a learning curve moving into a hotel setting, and we have a small and dedicated team here that will need to be retrained and mentored in the next several months as new menus and programs are put into place. This will not be luxury, fine dining, but merely recognizable food cooked with passion and care We were trying to keep the change under wraps until menus were swapped out and staff was settled.....but you kind of forced the issue when you texted me last night (which was fine) I'll keep updates posted here as warranted.
  17. Duckhorn used to be very good and Dan Duckhorn is (was?) a really good guy. Don't begrudge them in the slightest for cashing in, but haven't had a decent Duckhorn wine in 15 years
  18. Read through this article this weekend, and found it odd and fascinating. http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/08/29/damon-baehrel-the-most-exclusive-restaurant-in-america Don't have much more to add other than it is a good read, and has anyone on this board ever eaten there?
  19. Almost all the beers available were "local": Starr Hill, SmartMouth, O'Conner, Pale Fire, Devils Backbone, DuClaw, Brother's, Hardywood, River Company, etc.
  20. I was in Lexington, VA last weekend and the 7-11 on the outskirts of town had a growler filling station. About 10 craft beers on tap and three sizes of growlers to purchase and fill. Obviously, the greatest 7-11 in the world.
  21. Heading to NYC to see Hamilton this weekend. Due to the cost of the tickets, I have approximately $38 to spend on dinner!!!! In all seriousness, can I get any recommendations for dinner somewhere in midtown that will be very good but not break me? Thanks in advance
