  1. Anyone know if the owner is definitely there on particular days of the week? The recent posts on Chowhound seem largely lukewarm to negative.
  2. Three words: Grapefruit panna cotta. Had late lunch on 12/31 with best friend from college. Suppli hit the spot, and salt cod croquettes were perfectly cooked but blander than expected. Margherita was the highlight as always. Puttanesca was good, not great -- too many anchovies overpowered the pie. Cannoli were okay. Next time, it will be two margheritas.
  3. Is the lickety-split lunch option still available? I'm thinking about getting my secretary a gift certificate here for Christmas and may stop in for a quick bite.
  4. I have always made brisket by browning with the broiler and baking at a low temperature (under 300) in a roasting pan with Coke and ketchup, then letting it sit overnight in the fridge behore reheating the next day. What is the difference in taste/texture when you braise in a pot over the stove instead?
  5. Thanks for the recommendations. I've heard good things about Colavita from multiple places. Is there any place around here that sells it at a reasonable price? It seems excessively marked-up at Safeway. On a semi-related note, I asked this on the other board months ago but never got a response, perhaps because it was a dumb question -- is there any real benefit in buying one of those olive oil bottles with the spout on top? Wouldn't air get in through the spout and hasten the oil's spoilage?
  6. Alton Brown's stove-top macaroni and cheese has gotten me through a lot of hectic weeks recently. I am also partial to Nigella Lawson's lemon linguine, and not just because of the source.
  7. Sounds delicious. How did the cookie-fest go yesterday?
  8. What is the consensus view on olive oil for cooking -- at what point does "nice" oil become a waste of money?
  9. A big bowl of irish-cut oatmeal with Trader Joe's mango sauce. I'm been feeling really lazy.
  10. I just bought a Whole Foods bird last night. Anyone have recommendations on a relatively low-maintenance but still effective brine recipe? The one that Alton Brown suggests is a little too elaborate IMO.
  11. I remember back in the mid-1990s when Jamba Juice was called Juice Club and there were only three locations in California. It was the highlight of our day to make a trip there after class for some Razzmatazz.
  12. Neal's Yard Dairy (near Covent Garden) is a must for cheese. Also, I really like New Tayyab in East London for an authentic and inexpensive Pakistani meal. I've heard great things about the Sunday lunch at Putney Bridge in southwest London, but it was closed when I visited over New Year's.
  13. I've been assigned the Thanksgiving cooking duties for my family this year. Anyone have general tips on purchasing a turkey from the likes of Giant or Magruder (e.g., which brands are best, when to buy)?
  14. I've only been to Rocklands once, but would definitely drive the extra 10-15 minutes to Urban.
  15. Is the Old Ebbitt Grill brunch menu that's posted online more or less reflective of what y'all have experienced there? Do any other places serve from their brunch menus before 10:00? Most of the places I found don't start (or switch from their breakfast menu, such as the hotels) until 11 or later.
  16. The one in Bethesda is right off Wisconsin. I was surprised by the lack of gripes in today's chat. Only remotely "controversial" subject was Cakelove.
  17. Met up with a friend for happy hour before my poker game the other night. Based on the recommendations upthread, I got the fish sticks and the fries. When they each arrived in two cones, I thought I may have inadvertently ordered two, but it turned out to be a single order. What a spectacular deal! The hotel is only a couple of blocks from our DC office, so I will definitely be back and order the martinis on a night when I can drink more.
  18. Threads like these are why I love this board. Went with a couple of coworkers today. They raved about the fries. My burger actually tasted like beef! The shake was excellent as well. Totally put our meal at Five Guys earlier this week to shame, and it even cost less. Undoubtedly worth driving an extra five minutes. The location is not ideal, but I suspect this is why they can afford to charge so little for a quality product.
  19. After having had an underwhelming experience at one of the Alexandria locations three years ago, I was dragged to the new joint in Tysons for lunch today. All the criticisms above are spot-on. Blech. The fries taste okay, but $4 for a not very big cup? No thanks.
  20. Thirded. I really, really wish there was a place like it in Montgomery County. Bombay Bistro is decent enough, but it ain't Minerva.
  21. So did anyone end up going? I am a fan of The Best Recipe too, but Chris is insufferable on the show. Maybe he's more engaging in real life though from what I've read, it's highly doubtful.
  22. Took my grandmother, aunt, and sister to a late lunch here on Saturday. Finally got to have some of the excellent toro (it was unavailable my first time), which was as good as advertised. I agree that the lobster was blah, but the scallop, mackerel, and spicy tuna roll were as good as always. Final bill including tax/tip was $76. The room was about half-full. I really hope this place lasts for years and years.
  23. What exactly makes a cupcake "good"? To my unsophisticated palate, they all taste the same.
  24. Depending on the weather, there's always the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Mmmm, lychee sorbet. If it's colder, you can walk down to the Doughnut Plant on the Lower East Side. They also serve some extraordinarily rich Valhrona hot chocolate.
  25. She is going to be at White Flint earlier in the day as well. http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/special_ev...4_29519,00.html
