  1. I was cleaning out a drawer and came upon these old matchbooks (see attached pic). Many of the restaurants have since bitten the dust. The skinny red one is Hunan Chinatown. The black one in the middle right is A Cut Above. I have many Hunan Chinatown matchbooks so I must have liked that restaurant a lot. Do you wish any of them would come back?
  2. You never know but I would call right now and make a reservation. A couple of Sundays ago, I called in the afternoon to make a reservation for the evening and couldn't get the time I wanted. I wanted 7pm, got 6:30pm. The place was packed with people waiting around. YMMV.
  3. I hit a bad cashier at the Ballston location Monday evening. First she charged me for guacamole and was really put out when I said I didn't order guacamole. She asked the server, "didn't she get guacamole" and the server said no. Then she took forever to fix the bill. Then she forgot to give me the clementine that went with my kid's meal. She threw in a moldy clementine. My bag of food was away from me and she didn't lift a finger to move it closer to me. Blech! I hate bad service.
  4. Since this story "broke", I have been totally fascinated by it. As with many opiners, the customers were jerks but the servers definitely deserved the ax. However, I wonder about several things: Was the rice bowl question and the split check the only things that irritated the servers? We only heard from "Matt", so it is possible that the customers said other offending things that chapped the servers (although it still doesn't justify keeping them the payroll). Were the servers both Chinese? If so, why didn't they write the comments in Chinese? If the POS couldn't handle Chinese characters, why didn't the servers use Pinyin? Were there cultural differences at play? In America, the server behavior would call for immediate firing no matter what. How about in China? Would the manager have heard both sides of the story (including the servers' version that we weren't privy to) and decided there were mitigating circumstances?
  5. That is pretty bad. I really like their food so will be returning to the scene of the crime. From my limited China experience, you had to order rice as an extra side and then it came in a small bowl. During a banquet, it came in a big family bowl. Chinese restaurants in America usually include the rice as part of the entree.
  6. I'd like to try it, but haven't because I think the parking situation in that area is bad for a Saturday night (the only time I go out to eat). If I'm wrong, please let me know.
  7. We go to the one in Clarendon. We like their burgers but sometimes it is room temp by the time it gets to us, so I always ask them to bring it out as soon as it is ready.
  8. I ate at Brixx when it first opened (being the pizza lover that I am). Unfortunately I did not like that kind of pizza. I ordered a margarita, not reading the description. There is no sauce, just cut up tomatoes with fresh mozz, barely melted. The crust was more like a cracker, like matzoh. Actually, matzoh has more flavor. Never went back.
  9. I like their banh mi's but I also like the ones at Song Long Deli (more meat in the meatball banh mi). There was a Facebook post recently which asked which Eden Center store had the best banh mi. This list will comprise my future new places to try: Nhu Lan Sandwich Shop, Huong Binh, Banh Mi SO 1. Nhu Lan was the winner. Banh Ta and Song Long had many votes too.
  10. Thanks for reminding me. I just told my husband that we need to make the trip out there soon. Not that it is that far, but I'm just so lazy about crossing the river into DC.
  11. I had one forgettable meal at the Tysons location before Thanksgiving. When I say forgettable, I truly blocked out most of it. I remember parking that costs $6, no fountain soda--just cans, some small sandwich trio -- mediocre. I don't remember what my friend had. Place was mobbed. I will never go back.
  12. Oh yes. I used to see that place all the time because it is where my physical therapist is located. I'll have to check it out as an alternative to Booeymongers.
  13. Because of the preponderance of Word Of Beer-type places I want to like Il Forno. I want regular restaurants in that area. Actually, I went to Pizzeria Vinoteca once and was not a fan of their pizza (and I'm a pizza lover). Also went to SER once and wondered what the buzz was all about - my seafood paella was awful and expensive. I also am a semi-regular at Booeymonger's for their breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. They aren't great, but again, it's walking distance and acceptable.
  14. This place has been around for a couple of years but I only decided to try it last night because of NoVa Restaurant Week. I'm on the fence about the place. Nice venue, sort of modern Milan-like. My caprese was good though small. My husband's fried calamari was good. My cappricio di mare was okay - fish and shrimp good, but mussels, clams, and bay scallops chewy and lacked flavor. The sauce was good though but salty. The bread was good. The tiramisu was really good though small. I'm going to give them another chance because I want to like them. I can walk there from my house. So I will go again and try other things from their menu. Service is friendly and good. An organization I volunteer with holds Opera Buffs Happy Hours here once a month and the restaurant is very supportive of that. That also makes me want to give them another try.
  15. We haven't been to Oggi for about 6 years (judging from my last post on this restaurant). I had an old coupon so we went back. Boy, was it good! We couldn't remember why we stopped going...or they have some new talented chef! First the bread was nice and fresh. The olive oil was good quality - it reminded us of Italy. My mussels appetizer was delicious. Tender, tasty mussels in a nice garlic wine broth. My canneloni was good too. My husband, normally not one to be impressed easily, loved his salad, fried calamari and spaghetti with shrimp. We will be back, with or without coupon. Warning: wine by the bottle is a little pricey: $44 for the cheapest red. However I think wine by the glass was more reasonable. The entrees are pretty cheap so that makes up for it.
  16. We went again on Saturday for Restaurant Week. They really try to make the customers happy. We had to wait because the 2-top assigned to us was still occupied with people who were done with the bill but just chatting. Probably because I looked aggravated after waiting for a while, the hostess changed us to a 4-top. Hope that didn't screw anybody else up. My husband noticed the couple at the 2-top sat for 10 minutes longer chatting before they finally got up and left. That pork chop is the best; the desserts are not so great. I had chocolate mousse and it was forgettable.
  17. I forgot to ask if yesterday was more like a weekend day due to the holiday. Perhaps a regular Monday would not have carts but need to order a la carte?
  18. Did the pork dimsum have roast pork inside. Did it look like this? If so, I've seen them called roast pork croissants or roast pork puffs. They also have them at Fortune Seafood and they are my favorite dimsum. Chinese does not have a different ending for plural so har gow is singular or plural. Context tells you which it is.
  19. Please report back on your experience at Mark's. I've heard bad things in recent years so I've never gone. I was at Fortune for my milestone birthday January of last year on a Saturday and it was fine. Can't speak to a weekday experience. I went to China Garden in the summer for dinner and it was awful. If their pan-fried meat dumplings are indicative of their dimsum, don't go. They were the worst dumplings I have ever had - the meat inside tasted like it had turned. The waiter was surprised we didn't want to take the remainder home in a doggy bag. I should have said: taste it and you will understand why.
  20. I mostly order by the slice, always plain cheese pizza. This is what I always had as a kid, probably because I didn't have extra money for toppings. Two slices fresh out of the oven and a Mexican coke and I am in heaven. I like the taste of their cheese. I did buy a whole pie once and put lots of toppings on it because my husband wouldn't eat it otherwise. It was okay but not great. I think the toppings overwhelmed the pizza and I could no longer taste the cheese. If only there was a way for me to figure out the timing to get a fresh slice every time instead of getting it reheated.
  21. Figures. I ate there for the first time last month and thought it was great. Now it's closing. I booked one last meal next week. Sigh.
  22. It was Restaurant Week in Northern Virginia and on the list was a restaurant I never heard of called Trio Grill. We thought we would give it a try. The bread and herb butter was good, the wine selection for reds was good...about 12 categories with a couple of bottles in each category in the $30s (upper end of my budget). We ordered the tempura shrimp app in addition to RW meal. They were superb although there were only 5 of them for $16. The waldorf salads were okay. My stuffed chicken meal was a bit boring--more of the stuffing would have improved it. My husband, normally not effusive in his praise, declared his Berkshire pork chop the best pork he has ever had in a restaurant! Desserts were too sweet. Service was friendly and efficient. The room was very busy and loud so we had to shout to each other to be heard sometimes. All in all, we liked it and will return. However, during non-RW times, the prices are high, so it will only be for special occasions. Unfortunately, my husband's idea of a special occasion is "when he feels like eating pork again."
