  1. We went here for the first time last night. I was looking for a French restaurant to replace my beloved Lavandou in Cleveland Park. Well, this restaurant isn't it although we might try it again. My husband's beet salad was interesting; he liked it. My onion soup was pretty blah. Watery, tasting more of oregano or something other than onions. Thin slice of melted cheese (not sure if it was really gruyere) on top. Won't be ordering this again. My steak frites was much better. The meat was outstanding and tasty, but they served it lukewarm. When I mentioned this, they said it has to sit for 5 minutes before they serve it. Well, I think I'd rather they serve it right away because lukewarm steak isn't doing it justice. The frites were pretty good. My husband liked his beef burgundy but it had few vegetables in it and not much sauce. The first round of bread was really good, the 2nd round all burnt and dry. The wine list was pricey so we stuck with the cheapest bottle of red which tasted pretty good, but it was still $35. Hit and miss, maybe we will be back, maybe we won't. Service was friendly though.
  2. I'm heading there on Saturday. I took a peak at the menu and was so disappointed that my favorite starter, mussels in smoky fennel broth, was gone! These were my hands-down favorite mussels of all time. I hope they substitute it with something just as good.
  3. I went there a couple of years ago for some dinners. It was sometimes very good and sometimes not so good. What I didn't like at the time and maybe they have fixed it by now, but their ventilation system was non-existent so my clothes would be smelling of grease when I got home.
  4. It would be great if they bring their banh mi's to Clarendon -- even closer for me. Doubt that they will be as cheap though.
  5. I made my way over there yesterday for a #4 bahn mi xiu mai. Good as ever. Was looking over the other bahn mi places figuring where to go after SQ closes. Guess I'll try Les Baguettes or Bahn Mi So #1. If you know of better ones there, please let me know.
  6. The food here isn't great by any means, but this is a good place to have a private party. I was here as part of a family gathering. We had a private room. Service was great, but food was so-so. Liked the onion rings, calamari, didn't care for the nachos or the 5-layer dip although the tortilla chips were colorful and festive. I liked my burger (bacon on it was especially good), someone liked the shepherd's pie and fish/chips, another thought her Guinness stew too salty. Don't know how the other family members liked their food. What I did like was the way they itemized the bill. For me and my husband, they charged us for our entrees and beer and had a split charge for the appetizers which were shared by all. They also added a service charge so payment was simple--just pay the amount shown. I've had better food, but the service and the ease of organizing a private party where everybody pays their share couldn't be easier.
  7. I don't know if I've mentioned it before but the Nosh menu at Willow is the best bargain ever! You can try reasonably-priced small plates and get the gourmet experience. We were there Saturday night and had mussels, the awesome gougeres, calamari Picasso, scallop taco, eggplant/mozz sticks, apple and blue cheese salad and the double patty burger. All this great food and so easy on the wallet.
  8. After a couple of blah experiences in earlier years, we had a group lunch in January at the Mark Center location. I was dreading it due to previous blah experiences, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had a delicious chicken dish with a mustard sauce. The sides with it were great too. All my friends liked their dishes. It may not be on my regular rotation, but I won't object if someone wants to go there.
  9. After perusing your list: Ultimate Chicken Bistro, Toscana Grill -- out of business. I haven't been able to connect to Rocklands in the last 6 months. I still can't connect to Liberty Tavern. I see the Netgear signal, but I can't access it. Maybe it's due to my old Blackberry.
  10. I'm sorry to hear that although I've never eaten there. Drive about a mile west of there on Maple and go to Lotus Garden. Great Cantonese food plus hand-pulled noodle soup.
  11. Went there again for carryout dimsum on a busy Saturday lunchtime. I was trying their Cantonese Roast Chicken (炸åé¸¡) for the first time. It's rare to get this dish in this area, though common in NY Chinatown and one of my favorites. It was on their dimsum menu and it was awful. Salty and old-tasting. I doubt if that chicken was cooked today or yesterday. My guess is not many people order it so they served me old food. What a disappointment. However, their deep-fried eggplant with shrimp paste and roast pork croissants were very good. BTW, if anyone knows where I can order 炸åé¸¡ in DC/NOVA, I would appreciate it. I remember asking Full Kee at Baileys a few years ago and they said I had to order it a day in advance. Sigh...
  12. Yes, I have had the half duck several times as I used to work up near Van Ness St. It is pretty good and sort of satisfies the duck craving. If all else fails (meaning no better contender for duck is identified), I can come here.
  13. I saw a documentary on Peking Duck and how they served it in the Olympic Village during the Beijing Olympics. Anyway, it was enough for me to crave some for my birthday so off we went to the supposed mecca, Peking Gourmet. My husband and I were both disappointed. We like duck fat and they basically cut all that away before serving as well as pressed the duck meat so that the juices would be absorbed in the paper towel or cloth, I forgot. The skin was cold. The result being a boring, dry-ish duck. It was a Saturday night and the place was a mad-house and I am puzzled by its perennial appeal. Like schulju, I would like a good Peking Duck restaurant identified in time for my next birthday meal (in January).
  14. Either they undercharged you or Chipotles are cheaper in Fairfax City than in Arlington. I bought my husband a barbacoa burrito last night and it costs $7.54 ($6.85 pre-tax). This is without guacamole which I believe is about a $2 extra charge. There was no soda either. I like Chipotle in general, but the two near my house are pretty stingy with the ingredients. Often they put out a small scoop of rice and I have to say, can I have more rice, small scoop of beans, etc. Gets tiring asking them for more. Other customers do the same. I'm sure this is store policy but they should just charge me more instead of making me beg.
  15. I remember the original El Ranchero (then called El Rancho) in that strip mall. That was when it was a good restaurant.
  16. Sorry, I didn't realize they had 2 locations. It was in Tenleytown like the title of this thread.
  17. I ate lunch here the other day and the venue was divine--I felt like I was in Paris! The food was pretty good too. It was a gorgeous day so everybody ate out on the patio. I had escargots (good and buttery), croque monsieur (good - better than the one I had at Central but not as good as a freshly made one at La Madeleine). Bread and butter was good. Best of all was the dessert - a wonderful egg? tart topped with strawberries and raspberries. It was as delicious as it looked and may have been better than any dessert I had in France last year. I'd like to try their steak frites so maybe I'll drag my husband here for my birthday. C'est une bonne idea, ca.
  18. Have you tried Willow cookies yet? I had ones a few weeks ago that I think were called macaroons, but they weren't coconut or anything. There were smallish marzipan-tasting cookies with a raspberry cream filling. They were the best non-chocolate cookies I've ever had. Later I found out they were gluten-free!!!! I mean, I didn't feel like I was sacrificing anything by eating them. They were absolutely delicious!!!
  19. My non-English-speaking Chinese friends took me here for lunch today. I thought it was the best Chinese food I've had since NYC Chinatown in May (at Amazing 66 BTW). We had the hand-cut and hand-pulled noodles, salted fish and chicken with eggplant, yummy tofu with minced crabmeat, some shrimp dish with heads and shells still on, Chinese broccoli with garlic slices, fish fillets battered and fried. I don't know the names for most of them because my Chinese friend ordered. I just enjoyed eating everything. Service was fine and friendly.
  20. That is too bad. I like the burgers when they are freshly cooked. I don't like that they changed the bun. I do like that they added a salad. That was one of my husband's complaints about the place so now maybe we will go more often.
  21. The Caribou Coffee near Nando's on Dupont Circle has wifi - no password needed.
  22. I've been here a couple of time with friends and just ordered pizza which is great. Tonight, I dragged my husband there and we had pizza, fried calamari, caprese, pork belly with polenta, spaghetti and meatballs, and foccacia with rosemary and oil. Every single dish was a home run. Especially (for me) the pork belly which is what I'll request before going to the electric chair. For my husband it was the calamari, which blew him away. Needless to say, this is now on our regular rotation....and prices are not ridiculously high either. Win-win!
