  1. Going to Venice for the first time the day after Xmas. Staying near San Marco. Looking for really good food at reasonable prices (i.e., $200 a meal for 2, not $500 a meal for 2).
  2. The best restaurant we tried in Morocco is Dar Marjana in Marakesh. It is a feast and it is far superior to any other restaurant we tried in Morocco. It's about $200 with booze, tip not included. One seating a night as far as we can tell.
  3. The following is our letter to the management: We were scheduled to stay overnight at Bedford Springs Resort tonight, but we left very disappointed with the hotel's policies and hidden charges. First, no one informed us that there is a $150 pet surcharge. We specifically referenced pets in our reservation request yet no one informed us of the charge prior to our arrival. $150 is outlandish. The front-desk manager offered to discount it to $75, which is still outlandish. We were told that the hotel is losing money by only charging $75 for pets. We travel with pets regularly and I've never heard of such a claim. The second disappointment involves signing a disclaimer that we must check-out by 11 or else we might incur a late fee. Part of the reason we decided to stay at Bedford Springs Resort is so I can play a round of golf. It's hard to get in a round of golf in the morning if I have to check-out by 11. We very much looked forward to relaxing and enjoying the resort and its grounds but we left very disappointed. We were willing to spend $280 for a room, $125 for a round of golf, $150-$200 for dinner and drinks, $130 for spa treatment. Instead, we left.
  4. Went to the Tysons Panache for dinner. It's a beautiful space but the food was mediocre at best. The restaurant tries to do middle eastern, Spanish, French, and Italian, and pretty much failed at everything. We ordered 8 tapas - petit filet mignon, tortilla espanola, spanish octopus, rabbit milanese, seared scallops, lobster ravioli, linguine with white clam sauce, and cappellini pomodoro. Pasta is supposedly made fresh but the raviolis were way undercooked. Filet mignon was tough and overcooked. Tortilla not seasoned properly. The rabbit and scallops were bland. Things looked good on paper but the execution was bad. I'm not sure I would bother going back.
  5. Funny! We actually don't think it stinks enough. Too bad I'm golfing on Monday morning in Bedford Springs, otherwise I'd definitely go.
  6. Actually haven't been to Shabu Shabu. Is the menu significantly different than Noodle Bistro? And real smelly stinking tofu would be good.
  7. We live out in Tysons and I love ethnic foods (just not too sure what to try) and offal. Plan something and people will come, I think.
  8. That is a turnip filled pastry, not the turnip cake that one is used to get at dim sum. FWIW, we only refer to the Cantonese brunch as dim sum.
  9. We can't do weekday events (work late in Tysons and then there's traffic). Would love to meet up and do more ethnic eating on weekends.
  10. Had dinner at Marvin's last night (Sunday). We started with seared scallops and liver 'n onions (actually foie gras). We had the seared halibut and chicken and waffles as entrees and ended up sharing a pumpkin cheesecake. Everything was perfectly cooked (the chicken breast wonderfully crispy on the outside yet juicy on the inside), including the sides that came with the entrees. The halibut was served with spinach sauteed with smoked ham and garlic. The chicken was served with collard greens. Our server was friendly without being annoying. And they had Affligem on tap. Really good comfort food for southern francophiles.
  11. It was nice to meet a bunch of folks last weekend. It was nicer to have tried much more food than we could have on our own. Let's slow down and try even more food next time!

  13. I went to Joe's years ago, went it first became Joe's (it was the Corner Bistro, and then a Moroccan joint). The burgers were tasty (maybe a bit undercooked) but the dining room was filled with smoke. Haven't been back since. As for Slade's, it's like any other chain bar food joint, with large portions and nothing exciting. Maybe they have good burgers.
  14. Trying to convince my wife to come. She's not overly fond of dim sum (she'll try anything once, and usually just once) and she just got into Bikram yoga so I'm not sure if she's coming or not. Her yoga studio smells like sweatng feet, so at least dim sum will smell better. Oh, how do I spot you foodies (not having met any of you before)? To say that I'm Chinese probably isn't going to help in this situation.
  15. You folks don't mind me gnawing on chicken feet, do you? It happens to be my favorite dim sum dish.
  16. 28th works for me. How does this generally work? People order whatever they want and everyone is welcome to share? We split the bill at the end?
  17. It's probably still the best French restaurant in the area.....I wonder why we don't have better restaurants in McLean/Tysons (other than steakhouses).
  18. I didn't mention it to the server. As far as I know, there's nothing wrong with the soup. It may not be to my personal liking but maybe some people love it. Just out of curiousity, do you think the pot au feu was better than the pho soup you can get get a good Vietnamese shop? I just didn't think the flavor of the oxtail was in the soup.
  19. Went to Palena last night and one major disappointment was their pot au feu. The soup was watery and sour, with no hint of the oxtail having been stewed in it. It tasted like some pre-stewed oxtail meat was thrown into a thin watery broth. BTW, I don't like Thai soups. I've tasted stronger tea than this soup.
  20. When I'm in foreign countries, I look for McDonald's just to see what's on their menu that's not available in the U.S. For example, in the French caribbean, they have the McHomard, some kind of lobster sandwich. I was most disappointed not to see McKebab in Morocco. Chances are, they are mobbed and I have plans to dine elsewhere so I never get to try these outrageous products.
  21. We went and it was quite good. We had the 5 course tasting menu. With the amuse and bread, it was definitely plenty of food. The day we went they had boudin noir as an appetizer and tripe parmesean as an entree. The boudin noir was really delicious. I'm used to stomaching them at French restaurants in french territories because that's what they eat. Cathal made me want to try more boudin noir. The tripe parmesean was just creative. Never would I have thought tripe would be served other than in some stewed fashion. He breaded it, fried it, and dressed it like veal parmesean (presumably after stewing it for some time) and it was wonderful. Unfortunately my wife's poached lobster was tough. With the supplements for foie gras and lobster, the meal gets expensive quickly. It deserves being one of the best restaurants in town in terms of food but not so much in terms of value. As for much of the whinging that went on before, the meal was served in just over 2 hrs.
  22. doh, I'm actually not going to be available until September 14 (Sunday)....golfing this Sunday and then we go on vacation. We're going to Peru and I've heard they have dim sum in Lima. Might have to check it out.
  23. Just found this thread. I can't get enough dim sum and I need to venture out of VA.
  24. I have a hard time supporting a chef who calls his competitor with more talent a "little bitch" and all he's got to show for it is a burger joint. Hellooo. I rather go to McDonald's.
