  1. Son of gun. The one weekend we will be away this fall.... Regrets to all (the fabulous food we will be missing) If use of our propane cooker and pot is still desired it can be arranged...
  2. I have also posited the idea of some sort of Ray's onesie merchandise for our son. Mr. Landrum came up with a concept on the spot of an outfit with the Ray's Hellburger logo on the front and his face on the nether regions. How can we make this a reality?
  3. Another +1 for the oysters. Corn meal crunchy goodness. All the food I had was spot on. Plus it was fun in a sadistic way to watch the staff flail desperately through opening night crises.
  4. I probably went there about three times every couple of years or so for the past 6 or 7 years. (It's just such a unique and elegant setting when the weather permits outdoor dining and a great place to take out of towners.) There was a steady and noticeable decline starting about 3-4 years ago or so. After the last visit I had pretty much given up on the place. And yes, I realize this is probably going to get moved ---
  5. Has L'Auberge improved at all in the past year since Jacques officially took the reigns? The past two visits there (both just prior to the senior Haeringer's passing) were a mess.
  6. OOOOPS sorry I misread your post in a have-a-newborn-sleep-addled way and thought you were looking for a place for a big (large) party. Carry on.
  7. Ray's the Steaks does close off the back room to large parties (up to 30 I believe.) We had our rehearsal dinner there and it was a blast. However, there is a "minimum dining charge" that could be cost-prohibitive depending on what you have in mind. The nice thing is if you don't meet the minimum they let you buy wine to go at a cut retail rate off the (rather nice) list to make up the difference.
  8. It's hard to overstate how underwhelmed I was with this place. Severely overpriced for what you get (as previously stated by many others.) Food offerings simply not very exciting or (frankly) good. The biggest beef I have with the place is innovation in the place of quality. This place is supposed to be a sort of "museum of American food"? Then why are you serving Buffalo Wings without the traditional sauce? Why does the She Crab Soup in no way resemble ANY version I have ever had during numerous visits to Charleston? This place should have been focused on making the best version of <fill-in-the-blank> but instead just serves as another excuse for Jose Andres to get his pretentious self all over everything. Epic fail.
  9. I have to give another huge (and belated) rubber stamp of approval for this place. Wife and I dined here about 6 weeks ago - I had the "normal" tasting menu and she had the offal menu. Innovative without being pretentious. An obviously inspired chef. This was easily one of the best (and most memorable) dining experiences I have had in DC.
  10. Unfortunately I moved to the Telegraph/Franconia area just weeks after Honolulu folded. Everyone around here talks about it like it's this lost mythical place - a combination of Camelot, Atlantis, and Shangi-La, but with umbrella drinks.
  11. One of the most unfortunate poxes on suburban Virginia - due to several draconian zoning restrictions neighborhood bars simply don't exist for most areas. While I mostly love NOVA this is my #1 pet peeve about living here.
  12. I'm sort of surprised no one has started a topic for this little gem. Owned and operated by a lovely couple - the wife works the front of the house and the husband makes all the food in the kitchen - this place is a shining star in the otherwise grim food world south of the Beltway. The coffee is good. The quiches are great. The lemon curd tart is freaking rapturous. If you are ever stuck down in the Restaurant Hell that is where I live, give this place a try. It's well worth a few extra minutes to get to.
  13. Set to open July 1st at 14th and U NW. The chef (who, in full disclosure, is shacked up with a good friend of mine) was most recently exec chef at Smith and Wollensky here in DC. I haven't had much of his food, but I can tell you he makes a hell of a cake (made a banana puree filled chocolate thing at our baby shower that was dynamite.) Whether the food is good or not (and here's hoping it is) the deck alone is worth a look. Just looks like a great place to hang...
  14. I was in here for dinner last night (deviled eggs were better than ever) and the bartender said their last day was June 26th, not the 30th. Not sure if either I or he was confused somehow, but that's what he told me.
  15. Alas sad news. I was handed a job for the day of the picnic so sadly I (and more importantly my deep fryer) are out of play for the day.
  16. It is basically only available when a proprietor of one of those fine establishments makes a special trip to the brewery to get some. They don't officially ship here. I have seen some of their stuff on tap at PP on occasion, but it is sporadic at best. I have also (every now and then) seen a bottle or two for sale at Connecticut Wine and Liquor just off of Dupont Circle, but again, very rarely and usually for an INSANE mark-up.
  17. In all fairness if I got a $38M payoff I might just lose my mind a little bit...
  18. In with a +1. As usual I have a deep fryer with oil and a variety of paper products and disposable cutlery to offer, plus multiple coolers filled with ice a tasty, tasty beer.
  19. If I understand you correctly, you are mainly railing at dining partners who seem unable or unwilling to tear themselves away from their electronic opiate for the length of a meal and not the solitary diner that may be using his or her device at their own table? If so, I wholeheartedly agree and am a recovering offender. Solo diners can do whatever they would like as far as I'm concerned, however. My droid has a kindle app on it that I use all the time when I am out by myself. Sometimes, it's even a great way to avoid the attentions of the annoying barfly in the seat next to you. And yes, wearing bluetooth devices anywhere in public is pretty much the epitome of douchery at this point.
  20. This place seems to have adapted it's price point to the economy. Currently there is nothing on the menu (entrees included) that is more than $19
