  1. While walking down 23rd St. in Crystal City this weekend, I noticed a new Eritrean restaurant called Enjera (website) and, on the other side of 23rd St., an Ethiopian restaurant called Harar Mesob. Anyone tried either one yet?
  2. According to this article, it seems there are not one, but at least three cereal ventures out there: Cereality http://www.cereality.com/exp_stores.php from the addresses, the locations seem near colleges Cereal Central, formerly Cerealicious but then got sued by Cereality according to the article http://www.cerealcentral.net/ Cereal Bowl http://www.thecerealbowl.com/
  3. Express article on Pinkberry's plans to come to DC.
  4. Examiner article says, "At least one D.C. store (Rader would not reveal the exact location) will open by the end of this year, and the area is being targeted as a major focus area because of its walkable nature, Rader said." A bowl of cereal is what I used to make when I wanted to do the most minimal amount of "cooking" at home so I don't see myself going out for one. But maybe it's more for the kid crowd (like gummy bears on cereal? yuck).
  5. I eat more sushi in the summer than the winter.
  6. I thought the same thing when Clay said that. It would have been funny to see the guests' and judges' reactions to Sara's dish if she'd used the scotch bonnet pepper marinade, but I guess she left it off.
  7. I'm not into beer so don't know if Shenandoah Brewery near Landmark Mall in VA is any good, but throwing it out here as a local brewery. For his birthday a number of years ago, I took my husband to make his own beer there, which was fun for something different to do.
  8. I noticed that as of last month, "The List" said Restaurant 3 will be opening early July. I found some more info about the restaurant here including: "Executive Chef Brian Robinson trained under Terrell Danley, Executive Chef of Cream, and Darryl Hughes, former Executive Chef Georgia Browns and Paolos Restaurant. The menu will feature an eclectic American cuisine with some regional accents. Menu items of interest include: Appetizers: Grilled Brie with fresh fruit; and Scallop and Grits with Asiago Grits, Tasso Ham Entrees: Duck Breast with sweet potato hash; Bone in Filet with a risotto tater tot; and Fresh Fish from Hawaii Their beverage program will focus on an extensive list of New World Wines (by the bottle and glass) and American Eclectic Draft Beer."
  9. Some info on experiences at the Birchmere at this thread and there's also a thread on the Birchmere though not as much info there.
  10. Interesting ingredients. What are these cookies like compared to typical oatmeal chocolate chip cookies? Are they chewy?
  11. Lizzie, in case you didn't see the article in the WashPost today on the salty oat cookie and their recipe for salted oatmeal cookies here.
  12. We don't seem to have a thread on Top Chef on the Bravo network. Season 3 starts this Wed, June 13th at 10pm. Does anyone else watch it? I'm hoping Season 3 will be better than Season 2 (as in, less drama), although the previews don't make it seem that way.
  13. Got a shawarma to go last week, and I think next time, I shouldn't get the chopped onions in oil(?) from the sauces section. The sandwich was dripping oil out the bottom when I was eating it.
  14. We've been to the Vienna location a few times and went to the Route 7 location for the first time. I like the steamed moo shu rolls but would enjoy them more if they came with hoisin sauce rather than a sweet and sour/ketchup-y sauce. Like many on this thread, I've gotten the General Tso's, maybe the Songbird, in the past. I thought I'd try something different this time so I had the Eggplant Lover-"Golden brown battered eggplant stuffed w. organic cheese, soy protein & sun-dried tomato & pine nuts pesto in sweet & sour sauce, garnished w. mango, red bell pepper, green soy bean, fresh msurhoom & carrots." It came with four pieces of battered and fried eggplant "sandwiches" (two oval slices of eggplant with melted cheese/tomato/pesto in between) placed on top of the vegetables/soy protein/sweet and sour sauce. It was like getting a Chinese and an Italian dish in one entree. The eggplant was a bit firm for my taste. Interesting, but I think I'll order something else next time.
  15. My mom prepared Spam by slicing it, putting in a pot of water, and letting it boil a little. It made it less salty.
  16. The noodles section of the Dupont Circle location's web menu says they have "Home Made Fresh Noodles (Prepare fresh daily)." Does anyone know if that menu is still current, and has anyone tried the fresh noodles?
  17. I had sushi for lunch yesterday from the Taipei Tokyo on Nicholson Lane. This location has more of a fast food atmosphere than the location further north on Rockville Pike or in Fallsgrove. I haven't been to the Bethesda one. I don't know if there any others or if they are all under the same ownership? Anyway, for the one on Nicholson Lane, the Japanese/sushi side is on the left, and Chinese food side is on the right. I usually get their sushi lunch special - two small rolls for $6.50, plus I get another roll, edamame or gyoza. I like the eel roll and spicy tuna roll. When it's cold outside, I've gotten noodle soup from the Chinese side. I bought food from the Chinese food steam table once but wasn't impressed.
  18. Donuts for dessert? I've had them at Komi, Oval Room, and Indigo Landing, and they're on the dessert menu at TGIFridays.
  19. Wash Post: "Montgomery County Council Approves Ban on Trans Fats" "The measure will take effect in January for restaurants, and in January 2009 for establishments offering baked goods other than those that are prepackaged."
  20. I saw Spam singles (classic flavor) today at the new 7-11 near Moby Dick's House of Kabob in Clarendon.
  21. We went to the Park Hyatt for afternoon tea about two months ago. The tea menu is large, but one of my favorite parts of afternoon tea are the tea sandwiches, and the tea buffet only had sweets and condiments (such as scones, cookies, fruit frangipane tarts, chocolate tarts, clotted cream, dulce de leche, peanut butter, and others). There wasn't an option to order any tea sandwiches, though you could order lunch type foods off the menu. I ordered a side of fries. The pastries were good, but I'd go somewhere else next time where there are tea sandwiches.
  22. The mushroom pearl pasta risotto is made with pearl pasta instead of arborio rice, and it had pieces of mushroom and a nice mushroom flavor. I thought it tasted good, but it was very rich, cheesy and a bit greasy.
  23. I haven't tried this recipe, but did you look at this one (click here)? Here's a link to another blog that tried that recipe.
  24. Clare and Don's has fried dill pickle chips.
