  1. It was a good piece. However, I would not call any of these places affordable for most people, unless you consider $100 for two affordable. I use to be able to get out of the Majestic for under a C-note, but not sure what the new prices will look like after the takeover. Central forget about, and rumor is the prices at Beck's will be close to or more expensive than Central.
  2. You should post this in the comments section of the New York Times dinning blog.
  3. http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/200...-idea/#more-220 I don't care much for the first paragraph...typical New Yorker comment.
  4. Jose exposed Bobby Flay as a light weight. His dishes were much more creative and interesting, from what I can see. I really really hate that Jeffery guy (the judge), what an asshole!
  5. Actually, I cook alot from Thomas Keller's Bouchon cookbook, and I have been to a few bistro's in Paris so I know that bistro food is not all boring. I was saying that it would be boring for DC to become known as a city of bistro's. Also, I am not inclined to spend alot of money at places that serve the kind of food that I can cook at home.
  6. How Many more "french" bistro's do we need in this city? Beck is opening in a few months as well. Washington is known as a steak town, now we are becoming a bistro city, which is just as boring.

    Bread

Only the French Loaf, and it is usually in a Firehook bag, so you know it's not made in store.
  8. I have been using a french press for the last few years with mix results. A few weeks ago, I came home to find the glass insert missing. I found out later that night that the cleaning people broke it and threw it in the trash, this really pissed me off at first. However, I did not make a fuss about, as these things do happen. So last week I decided to purchase a stove top expresso maker, just to try something new. The results have been a more consistent cup of coffee, I love it. and will never go back to the french press.
  9. Man this is the grill I have been looking at for the last few weeks. All the review I have read are pretty postive. I think I am going to buy it this weekend. How long have you been using it? I was thisclose to buying a gas grill until I saw this one.

    Bread

Best Buns in Arlington has the best bread IMHO. Firehook Bakery would come in second, there are a few locations in downtown DC and Alexandria VA. Best Buns is worth the drive for what you are looking for. Stay clear of any bread at Whole Foods or any other supermarket in the DC area.
  11. Wow $30O for two? That's Komi, Cityzen, and Maestro money. Was it worth it?
  12. I checked Amazon last night and it was priced around $29.
  13. I bought this book yesterday at Costco for $25! I cannot wait to make the lobster burger and the mushroom cigars! I am glad I held out, I think this book retails for around $40.
  14. I don't get it, cupcakes are so easy to make.
  15. I think taste is more important that all of the above. I do shop at farmers markets during the summer and sometimes the quality is just not there, as it is sometimes at Whole Foods and other stores. I do buy organic sometimes; although I am not sure it is worth the extra cost because. I really can't taste the difference between produce that's organic and those that are not. Sure it makes you feel good to say you buy local and organic. However, unless you are going to the farm and inspecting the produce yourself, we really don't know what we are getting.
  16. This is true, however it does not make them equal. All of the above items would be considered refined bistro fare. I would not consider tartare and braised short ribs "fine dining" anymore.
  17. I believe Tom had some prior food writing experience on the west coast before he got the job at the Post. He also trained under the previous food critic for the post. The passage below struck me as odd, for the food critic from The Paper of Record. Outside of being a journalist, it looks like Burni has as much experience with food, as most well traveled bloggers. Bruni says he has long loved food but underwent no formal training. After he was named restaurant critic, he read books on cuisine and did a quick tour of New York, Paris and Hong Kong to "have some fresh memories on the palate."
  18. I have had a Costco membership for some time now, and for the first time this weekend I just found out how inexpensive their meat really is. I went crazy. A 5lb rib roast for $26, you could spend that on one steak at Whole Foods!. Needless to say, my fridge is now packed with all types of meat from Costco. I made the rib roast last night, and its as good as any I have ever bought from Whole Foods. I am only buying Chicken from Whole Foods going forward!
  19. The food is good not great at Central, I would take the food served at Citronelle Lounge over Central any day. Central is what it is: Good bistro food.
  20. I wonder how Frank got such a high profile food job? I was unaware that he had to prior food industry jobs; even Tom worked his way up to the top job.
