  1. Don't forget the camera! The keyboard needs awashing!!
  2. I'm a sucker for "Taste of" festivals, and so, I visited the Taste of Georgetown today! It's going on until 4pm, I think, on Wisconsin Avenue, down towards Canal. For $20, you get 5 tickets or $5 for 1 ticket. Each ticket is a tasting at the restaurant's booth. There's also a $10 wine tasting option; otherwise, Safeway provided free sodas & water. I opted for the $20 "deal," so each tasting = $4 and Gebaby really enjoyed the Falafel pita wrap at Neyla, the Lobster sweet potato gratin at 1789, and a Crepe from Cafe Bonaparte. Mie n Yu had a Kobe Beef, which I heard was good, but the J Paul sliders weren't. 1789 also had an extra tasting of a pistachio-pomegranate meringue, which was good. You couldn't taste the pomegranate, but the meringue was just right. Gorgeous day for the festival, which also had free music. Edited for major spelling errors.
  3. I've tried the HT brand and the Trader Joes whole grain penne, and found the same results: "almost mealy." I don't think there's a secret cooking method, since the fact that it's whole grain makes it that way, I think. I anologize it to brown rice or quinoa -- thre more "grains" it has, the more "texture" the food has. The one time the mealy taste was masked when when I made Baked Penne (substitute penne for ziti) and I don't know if the baking or the combination or sauce and cheese made it softer than just boiling.
  4. Um, this one.ETA: The costumes can give these moms a nightmare, I think...
  5. Picked up some fleur-de-sel caramels to satisfy my expectant-friend's chocolate cravings, but she approved more of the Snap Crackle Poppers Jason was selling!! The combination of crispy rice, chocolate, with a surprise taste of sweet-n-sour dried cherries outshined the caramels. Proved to be a worthy extra purchase.
  6. To "celebrate" the recent press, there is now a Back Alley Burger. Unfortunately, I don't remember what's on it other than bacon and cheddar, I think. I noted it, but then I was trying to calm a five-alarm tantrum from a little one with whom I was trying to share my Toasted Marshmellow Shake. At least the shake was well-received... (he had about the size of a mini-moo, and I was counting my blessings that the sugar didn't keep him awake...)
  7. Apparently, almost 2 (22mos. in this case) is a good age to start them on simple rolls, as evidenced by gebaby tonight: he finished off an entire California roll all by himself. That's after a half a bowl of Veggie Yakisoba and a full bowl of Miso soup. I'm shaking my head in amazement.... ETA: PS. The sashimi was nice, but the temakis Ken was making looked *really* good. Need to try that next time...
  8. Appeared to be open last night with a nice looking crowd, but this is based on a drive-by en route to somewhere else.
  9. Well, it's spreading. There's a "Coming Soon, Elevation Burger" sign up in the Lee-Harrison Shopping Ctr. (Arlington) next to Chesapeake Bagelry and Dogma Dog Bakery. Didn't post an expect to open date.
  10. I'm not sure that it'd closed, but I had heard that they were take a break...
  11. Wanted to add another fast option for a quick bite: West Wing Cafe. Their hot paninis are pretty good and they have good snacking options too.
  12. The Washington area Chinese newspaper advertisement showed "Happy Go Family Supermarket" (家樂福).
  13. Right, the location "on the boulevard" as there are two. For you TheMatt, it's the second location you went to. Doubly make sure, especially for those who haven't been there before!!
  14. This is really funny because Fortune was the disappointing of the bunch you mentioned and MDH was the best, although it's been about a year since I've dim summed there. My first and only experience at Fortune consisted of cold, slimy dim sum with too much salt or MSG. I have no idea if it was an off-day, but certainly made me not trust that place at all, taking everything into consideration (tables, cleaning methods, dish appearance, cold food, service, etc...). Have to try both again soon.
  15. If you haven't done this already, take the time to walk to the restaurant from the Foggy Bottom metro station, but take the convoluted route: down I Street, go around past and enjoy the intricate architecture of The Watergate, down through the Boat center, and that will take you by the refracting waters by the harbors off of Canal Street under the moonlight. Romantic non? But wait, there's more: up past the colonial buildings of yore on 30th Street, take a right on M Street, and voila, a little piece of home is waiting to welcome you inside. I had no idea how hidden and welcoming this place was until I did my walk. It was truly the right place recommended by a dear friend to go to for some comfort and santuary from the hideous day I had. The warm combination of the hand made saffron fettucine mixed with a light seafood broth, tender and moist mussels, shrimp and calamari, compliments the homey-feeling the noodles gave, plus a nice glass of Cass red wine calmed any anxieties developed. Top that off with a stroll down M Street, through Key bridge and to the Rosslyn station and that'll be a lovely night to remember.
  16. I'm going to be in the minority and state that it has the appeal and fun of eating astronaut/dehydrated food, but with the taste and texture of flavored Tums. Maybe it's just the bag I got.
  17. I agree that this place is definitely not the place to catch up with girlfriends you haven't seen in 2 months. On a Wednesday night at 7:30pm with the place just a little more than half full, I found myself shouting way more than my "normal" voice (and that's shouting for me already for those who know me!). At least the acoustics were working if anyone ever wanted to play a full set here... However, having said that, bypass the onion gravy to pair with the mashed potatoes that accompanies the fabulously moist Amish Chicken and pair it instead with the tart, but smooth lemon marmalade. Your mouth and your stomach will thank you.
  18. Dinner for the week: Roast chicken buttered with tumeric, cinnamon, sea salt, and pepper, with a root of ginger in the cavity, accompanied by carrots, corn on the cob, potatoes, and japanese yam. Love comfort food on a not-so-good day like today.
  19. Well, I can certainly add Rustico to this list, as um, they were really nice to put up with two pre-nap, cranky babies. Gebaby and gf's baby weren't cooperating, but the staff was super nice and tolerant of us at 11:45am. *sigh* Definitely count high chairs and boosters to the inventory.
  20. After a trip to the doctor's, I could not resist visiting the Pupatella cart since the office was so close and I don't really get a chance otherwise to visit their location and the Ballston Farmer's market. I ordered a I-want-to-sock-my-bronchial-infected-coworker-for-getting-me-sick pie (it was really the Margherita) and found comfort after the first bite. There are rarer comforts than fresh-out-of-the-oven pizza, the first bite blending the piping hot tomato sauce with the cheese and the sting of the basil, followed by its warmth trailing down your throat, and this pizza definitely falls within that category. Their crust reminds me of the really good, freshly baked pitas from Zaytinya in the good days -- soft, chewy and warm. At around 1:30pm, there was a line of 10 people waiting for their orders, but as stated above, my pizza was worth the wait.
  21. Their construction seems to be going pretty well, but this was from a brief glance as I walked by on 14th Street.
  22. Anyone who hasn't had the Pear Tarte Tatin yet should put this dessert on their next-item-to-try-list, especially if you are a caramel-lover. The bread coming out piping hot was a warm touch to a cool, fall night (happy post-harvest-moon festival!). Service was nice and patient with us three gabbing ladies.
  23. First thought was Fyve, but I haven't tried the place, nor have I seen their space. Pentagon Row has some eateries (Lebanese Taverna is there). But Crystal City is just the next stop down, and there are more choices -- Bebo, et al.
  24. Any updates or links on places to eat or stay in Kuala Lumpur? I'll be traveling there end of November/early December. Thanks!
