  1. My last bowl was all white meat (they ran out of dark) and it was really dry. Not my favorite experience, but at least broth was good. I still think the beef bowls are the way to go for the 1st time, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what to order...
  2. Finally found one near Metro Center for a quick fix! On H Street, next to 1250 H Street is Coffee Espress, which is serving Angelberry (another chain, I presume, but can't find a link for it) frozen yogurt. It is $3.50 for a large and $2.50 small pre-tax. 2 flavors: Original and Mango. There are some fruit toppings, but don't expect the options offered at some of the other places. The original is not as tart as TangySweet and a bit icier, but it hits the spot. Plus, I don't have to trek to Dupont Circle. Quick fix, hits the spot, cool for the last days of summer.
  3. I went with a friend for lunch and wished my experience here was even remotely simliar to CrescentFresh. Granted, I ordered their lunch special "Bento Box," which may have been a poor choice to start off with (dried Tandoori Chicken, over-salted string beans & sliced carrots coated with a funny sauce...). If you do go, I *highly* recommend the Roasted Plantains if you're a fan of plantains. At $6, this was enjoyable, as it was cut into thick slices, roasted with a honey sauce, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I would ask them to hold the sesame seeds, as it introduced a completely opposite texture of the soft, sweetness of the plantains. Also, don't dip into the sauce. Ruins it completely. Perfect dish to split with someone.
  4. Dino - High Chair & changing table. Lots of families. Hook - High Chair.* Not a real baby-friendly place, but they were super nice and played with gebaby A LOT. But this was before Barton & Josh left, as it was them (and other front & kitchen staff) who talked to/entertained gebaby a bit. Natalia's Creations (FC bakery but can get some food) - High Chairs. Baby-friendly. Changing table. Pho Hot - High Chair*, family-friendly. Four Sisters - High Chair*, family-friendly. ETA: A&J's Rockville didn't have a high chair last time I went. I can't remember the reason. Agree with V.H. that most Asian places welcome babies: Yuan Fu (Rockville)* - High Chair, baby-friendly, played with gebaby. Oriental Gourmet (Arlington Lee-Harrison) - High Chair, baby-friendly. Sunflower (7 corners) - High Chair, changing table, but not-so baby-friendly. Got some looks when gebaby was fussy last time. Tachibana (McLean)* - High Chair, not-so baby-friendly. See Sunflower. *Places I can't remember if there are changing tables or not.
  5. Someone please shoot me the next time I agree to go to some "Happy Hour" serving really bad $1.95 potato skins and other "bar food." Ugh. Am definitely paying for it tonight.
  6. Me three. My only thought is to choose a time when the staff is not-so-busy, so that the experience may be savored or cherished more if the staff can spend more time, knowing the occasion.ETA: I think you're wonderful for providing and planning such a special experience.
  7. A beautiful smile

    Wonderful free spirit one

    Eyes that sparkles joy

  8. Apologies for the spelling errors -- it's what I get for not proofing my typing. I just wanted to highlight some things that people didn't mention (a bit of injustice to Chef Will, I think if I didn't write about highlights). The cheddar biscuits appetizer tasted like mini-sliders, but with the right combination of buttery goodness plus a little *kapow* of habanero. The spiciness did not at all linger in your mouth, which is great because it didn't mask other flavors to come. The bacon was just the right combination of fat and meat, but that grilled watermelon + goat cheese combo created this fusion of melt with sweet that was nice. My favorite dish of the evening was the gnocchi, as I have not had such good gnocchi in a looong time. The blue cheese and butter created sort of this mac-n-cheese likeness, but was exactly as Chef described it in his talk: "soft and rich." One note for women if you plan to attend a Farm to Table dinner -- one of the a/c vents is right by the table, so you might want a light sweater just in case.
  9. If the good part can be compromised, I'm thinking Chinatown places like Full Kee or Chinatown Express -- some wait-service, but general, run of the mill and fast.
  10. Carving!!! Also planning to be there. Am thinking about bringing dessert at this point. +gebaby of course.
  11. Crazy but cute story: braved the storm this past Saturday with gebaby. Just picture one gebaby (probably 30in. tall by now) in an ergo carrier in the front, wrapped by my raincoat, me holding an umbrella, him eating an Atwater muffin, while it's rainy, the wind is blowing, and water is cascading from the top of the tarps. Also carrying 1 purse and a sack with squash blossom, tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, and eggplant. Surprisingly, there were quite a number of people, with a 3/4 full parking lot at around 9-9:30am. What fun.
  12. A BIG T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U to Chef Will Artley for your entertaining stories, company, and of course, for the food. Chef certainly made dinner feel like family and made it family-styled as well. I will defer the comments/reviews to our first-timers (IlanaKS or dalaii) or even our 2nd-4th timers (aaronsinger or TheMatt), but certainly, I am happy to provide my own little "amuse pictage" for the evening. Grilled Habanero & Cheddar Biscuits with Fried Dragon Creek Center Chilled Pea Soup with Minted Creme Fraiche Savory Cones with Tuna Trio of Heirloom Tomatoes: Gazpacho, Tartare-style with Bacon, and Grilled watermelon with goat cheese trio. Brown Butter & Blue Cheese Gnocchi with Mussels & Sage Froth Day Boat Scallops with Fava Bean & Mschroom Succotash, and Corn Sabayon I believe someone else has a lovely picture of the Apple Butter Based Suckling Pig served family-styled, as it was passed around quite quickly before I had a chance to take a picture of it. It was accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes. Indian Summer Fruit Pie with Homemade Vanilla ice cream
  13. After reviewing 500+ documents over a span of 11 hours and feeling cross-eyed, I decided to treat myself and drag a poor co-worker along for the ride. My first time was not disappointing. The rain added to the ambiance of the sepia decor of Central. For the klutz like me, please, please watch out for the clear, nicely polished glass wall right after entering -- I almost smacked right into it upon entering and exiting. I am unsure if this partition is new, but nonetheless, I am not surprised by my inabilities to recognize plain-viewed obstacles. At 9:30pm, the bar was packed upon its reopening, and the dining room was pretty filled. Did not explore beyond the bar, but its mood and structure appeared straight out of Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergére -- the three angled mirror panels created wide, infinite spaces and views that resembled this painting so well. Was extremely privileged to shake the hands of both Chef Michel Richard and Carl Halvorson, while learning about the tidbit construction work done during the break (it is beautiful). Service was wonderfully executed by Tom (as well as Trace, who helmed my end of the bar), who I hope will enjoy his new adventure and experiences soon. Tom was great in every aspect. Split the Cerviche and Kit Kat Bar with my co-worker, while enjoying the half-pint of Blusser. The cerviche was a bit too acidic for me, but otherwise balanced, and the bread that accompanied it was the best pieces of bread I've had in a LONG time. The crust was crisp, not heavy, while the bread was light and chewy. There's just nothing else to say about the Kit Kat bar that hasn't been said already, other than WOW. I also really enjoyed watching Mr. Ulysses behind the bar in a *sharp* pink tie, tweaking a Fall, Venetian cocktail, which according to Tom, had a nice kick to it. Guess you'll all have to find out soon. Ended the night with a yummy, thick pint of Stone Smoked Porter and a nice walk in the misty rain. Can't get more '30's cinema than this. What a lovely Friday evening, even if it was alone in the end.
  14. I am sorry that you can't join us u-bet, but we are also happy that goldenticket can join us and take your place. Thanks all!
  15. Question: I was wandering around in Eden Center and there was a "New Big Wong" in there. Has it always been there, or did it temporarily relocate there, or is this something different altogether? I think (again, I'm sorry I don't remember exactly) it was inside Saigon East (near the grocery store) place.
  16. I think this was the only latch-key part that I enjoyed as a kid -- shopping and packing my own lunches since I was 7. My mom didn't have time, so she taught me how to make my own lunches (which consisted mostly of sandwiches). I think it built my independence skills and still appreciate it (even though other kids' lunches were better somedays). The only part that I am still concerned about (although I'm not there yet) is to keep the lid screwed on tight and correctly. I just remember having something similar to the food jar V.H. posted, and while it kept things hot, one time, I didn't have the lid screwed on right, and well, lunch was a miss that day.
  17. I make the drive from Arlington to Rockville to Stella's (Nicholson Drive, next to Taipei-Tokyo). I am not sure if they make Choc. Mousse, but their cakes are really good and not buttercream.
  18. I. Love. Their. Kimchi. I haven't had such good kimchi in a long time. Not limpy, good chew, right flavor of spiciness to it and stomach will be paying for it later. The Vegetarian Bibimbap ($6.75) had a nice runny yolk, just right carrots, with sprouts and spinach. Agree with synaesthesia about the Korean rice. I really like the sauce that comes with it. The cart is still yellow and there was no line at 1:30pm. The beef and chicken are now $7 and a "meal combo" (with soda) is $8. No sandwiches that I could see. Very yummy and it's enough to split into 2 meals for me, so the price is worth it (esp. compared to SoHo or Lawson's or any of those by the pound places).
  19. Thank you for the quick response! The following 14 will join us. The meal is $50 with no wine pairing and $65 with wine per person, tax & tip included. Welcome! Escoffier Grover Goodeats Scott Johnston Cucas87 aaronsinger Walrus Tripewriter TheMatt Nashman1975 IlanaKS StephenB SrtaJRosa u-bet! NCPinDC dalaii and just a reminder, the dinner is going to be this Sunday, September 7, starting around 7:30. Looking forward to seeing everyone. For directions, click here.
  20. Candied ginger (nibble) or Yogi Lemon Ginger tea (WF carries it). Feel better!!
  21. An AB&J (Almond Butter) on spelt (from Atwater!) -- best comfort food for terrible Tuesdays... ETA: Followed with Tangysweet Large Classic, Well-dressed.
  22. I went for tea there about 7 years ago, so this information is a bit out-dated; but I thought the cream was one of the best creams I've had at that time. I could not stop spreading it on thick on my scone. If you do succumb to buying clotted cream in a jar though, I just saw some at Harris Teeter on Glebe Road in Arlington.
  23. All Stir-fried: TJ Chicken thighs with fresh corn off the cob from the FC Farmer's Market +Shrimp and peas with a honey-mayonnaise sauce +FC Farmer's Market tomatoes with scrambled eggs = 1 happy and full baby sound asleep. *One of these days I will remember to write down which farm stand I shopped at...
  24. I agree with synaesthesia that even with the insert, the cupcakes were messy to pull out of the box. I think the inserts were way bigger than the cupcake, both in diameter and almost in height. But still, I had to join in the festivities of a new opening and follow the masses. At 3:30pm on a Saturday afternoon, the line was about 10 people long, with another 15 following after. The line was almost (1 person short) to the door when I left. Most of the flavors were out, it seems like, with only You Tart! (gluten-free and regular), Vanilla gorilla, 24 carrot, Triple Coconut, Vanilla with Strawberry Buttercream, and Peanut butter Blossom (vegan) flavors available. Bought a pack of 4 of the You Tart! (gluten-free), Vanilla gorilla, 24 carrot, and Strawberry, and ate the You Tart! with gebaby at the store. There was no limits set on number of cupcakes purchasable at 1-time that I noticed. Gebaby rejected the frosting for whatever reason. It was a nicely flavored lemon cream cheese frosting, but may have been too rich for him in taste. I had to take some of it off myself. The cake is denser than G'town cupcakes, and I think that may be why it tastes dry to some folks. I think the cake had a good lemon tartness to it. Will see how the others fared after it sits awhile. ETA: Tried the 24 Carrot 5 1/2 hrs after buying. Again, I think because it's a cream cheese frosting, it was too rich and much for me. I like the texture and heartiness of the cupcake, and because it's dense, it's not as moist as one might expect a cupcake to be. Just my $3.
