  1. Expensive at $150 at Target Online, this system looks pretty neat. Never used it, as we have a Brita pitcher, but I've not had much luck with either the pitcher or tap filter systems....
  2. I get to go to Chicago for a few days (June 5-7) and am excited to be staying at The James. But I crave some excellent dessert & coffee and no longer know where to go. Although I do have a car, I prefer to walk (or can grab dessert to go when I leave on the 7th), as I'm near Water Tower area, I believe. Recommendations please? Also, is it worth going to Intelligisia (I know I'm butchering the spelling, sorry)? I've heard it's good coffee and am curious ( I know I'll have to drive to this place) on your opinions. Thanks so much!!!
  3. I still can't believe Dale's gone -- I agree with what you said thistle -- he's a much better cook. Dale reminds me more of Tre from last season, than of Hung. Tre was a great cook, but Restaurant Wars just did him in.... She reminds me a lot of Tiffani in Season One. I think Lee Anne's blog on Bravo mentioned such too.I wish Lisa would learn from her past mistakes. I simply cannot believe the number of times I've said to the TV, "I can't believe she's doing that [insert ingredient] again -- didn't she learn last time that she's going to botch it up!!!" She's never been able to make proper rice (e.g. Mango Sticky Rice and the "sabotaged rice") and she's never been that good with shrimp (i.e. Police Academy raw shrimp ordeal). Grrrr. She, in my book, definitely doesn't belong in the finals. Should you be? I recall him being this obnoxious on his own season. I think I was taken aback by some of his retorts to judges' criticisms at the Judge's Table, and I wanted to bop him on the head a few times for that. He just came across ungracious throughout the entire season then, and it shows even last night.
  4. This location opened as of May 19, I think. Cupcakes are now $3 a piece and is starting to taste like boxed cake mix. I bought two: Strawberry frosting on vanilla cupcakes and Raspberry frosting on Chocolate cupcake. The Chocolate tasted better than the Vanilla, and I'm just realizing that overall, I'm not a huge fan of buttercream frosting. Given the quality to price ratio (including portion size), I'm not digging the price....
  5. I was so excited about finding a great pizza dough recipe that I had to share it with you all. Dinner tonight was: Dinner: Homemade pizza with baby bella mushrooms, panchetta, green peas, mozzarella and goat cheese (ingredients were all from TJs). Dessert: Peach cobbler from scratch a la mode. Need to work on finding a good cobbler recipe though. Sorry the pics are bad, but they were taken on my mobile:
  6. Thank you all for a wonderful time! Baby Jack really enjoyed the Salami and Lemon & Goat Cheese dip. He also enjoyed his bacon coma. It was truly wonderful sampling and experiencing such great and diverse recipes, ways of cooking, experiments, exhibitions and company. Looking forward to Scott's pictures.
  7. I drove by recently and the name changed. Did ownership change as well or something else happened? It's now "Wasabi to go." Just curious.
  8. I enjoy Post Selects Great Grains/Blueberry Morning/Banana Nut Crunch. I also enjoyed Smart Start, but now get confused by what is the plain-old one, until I read JLK's post (thanks!). My former-common breakfast of champions was the good ol' Smurf Berry Crunch. Just thinking about it makes my teeth hurt.
  9. I have room for 2 in my car, if they don't mind sitting next to the car seat. I'm in Arlington, and can give a ride to pick up someone living nearby, or whomever is willing to metro to EFC (orange line). Also, I'll be bringing my KidPod if a baby/toddler needs a place to nap.
  10. Does St. Alp use real fruit? I've been curious about that chain. Since the real appeal of Joy Yee's is the fresh fruit and one thing I miss when I leave Chicago -- most places out here use concentrated syrups or powders for fruity bubble drinks....
  11. Did anyone else view agm's link? I found it interesting that the comments received weren't mostly about the texture of the cake, but rather, the taste and flavor/texture of the frosting.
  12. I used to see them sold at WF in Clarendon and Tysons, but I don't anymore. I only see Plum and Happy Baby now. I know that she was featured on Oprah at one time. Although Mom Made Foods, Plum Organics and Happy Baby were convenient, I found that 1) they were really pricey for the convenience (I think $3.65-$4 for 2 little containers); and 2) there wasn't a whole lot of variety offered that I couldn't already make myself or that my DS wasn't allowed/able to eat/allergic to (e.g. sweet potatoes, pears, apples). I would like for her to succeed since she's from this area, but I also know that there are more mail-order companies that do the same and are a bit less for a bit more product.
  13. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't ever recall the eggs tasting anything other than like...eggs? Are they or have they tasted better or differently? Admittedly, the good ones have more of a melted center, but most of the time this dish just takes on with what it's seasoned. I was just curious. Unless you participate in a XLB-mouth-stuffing record. I don't know why this just reminded me of it, but my brother managed to stuff 6 in his mouth once. I don't think he felt his tongue for a long while after that....I do enjoy going to A&J, though mostly I go to the one in Annandale. People say that Rockville's is better, but I haven't been there yet. Is there a huge difference in taste/presentation for those who have been to both?
  14. Unless Nick's worked out something with DC not to go after the Arlington store, I think DC can still legally go after his assets, of which includes the Arlington store.
  15. Jason, sorry to not PM, but thought this would be a good answer for all to know: Where does one park after the small lot is filled? Anyone else can answer this question too.... THanks!!
  16. If "safe" is what you are looking for, then the chain restaurants in Tysons Galleria (or Tysons II) are pretty reliable. I've had a nice meal at Brio Tuscan before. There's also Wildfire at Tysons II that has gotten pretty nice reviews. HTH
  17. Ok, quite bad editing on my part to allow me to utilize the key points of goldenticket's quote (apologies in advance...). Went on Sunday for a girls' gathering brunch. View was quite lovely, with my 2 girlfriends and DS. The host and hostess was quite nice to DS, so I thought that was a nice start to the meal, hoping it'd get better based on reviews I had read somewhere else. I guess I didn't read the reviews here, as they were, of course, dead on. I ordered the Egg White Omelette with asparagus and herbs, with myself splitting a plate of lemon-blueberry pancakes as well. The omelette came super-olive-oily, with the asparagus not cooked too well. Pancakes were really cakey, so the best parts were actually the little fruit dish that came with the plates. Service was so-so, with the server forgetting a few things we had asked for and not really checking back with us after serving the dishes. We all agreed that we paid for a nice view and enjoyed the company. So, after almost 2 years, nothing really improved, I guess?!
  18. What if you have a inkling idea and don't have a partner. Where do you start pitching ideas? The WaPo article on investing just is intimidating me and leaving me clueless.
  19. Well, not that I'm an expert, but all that comes to mind is the scene in Sabrina where Audrey Hepburn fails miserably at making a souffle.... I think this one is hard if you don't make it all the time because it really depends on the timing.
  20. Is it sad to say that I'm just not that big of a fan of their coffee bean supplier? I know it's the same one that Nick and others use, but my stomach and the beans just don't agree. On the other hand, the Clover and the brew it made was just wonderful (rich, concentrated, hearty brew). And just seeing it in action makes me want to work there. If it only was closer to EFC area....
  21. I feel pretty healthy and not weighed down after eating their food, which is great for the long afternoons at work. I found their japchae to be too sweet for me, and I think same with boolgogi, so i tend to stick to their wraps. My fave wraps are the Tofu & Avocado Wrap and the Rice Wrap. The chili sauce on the Rice wrap is just very, very good -- a nice chili/sweet taste to it. For $7.50, it was worth it because I found it big enough to split it into two separate meals for me. I love tofu and I love avocado, so that's the reason why I enjoy the other wrap. I find their smoothies and shakes to be not so economically worthy (small portions for the price paid), but their coffee/lattes are. They use a pretty low-acid bean with a rich texture, so I enjoy a cup of their soy latte. Just don't go during lunch time, as it's a small place with nowhere to stand to wait for your food. It was bad in the winter, but won't be so bad now that the weather's warming up (and their outdoor seating will be starting soon).
  22. I don't know if you've tried the Tyson's location, but I've not had any problems there so far (knock on wood), AND their meat dept. was more accommodating than the Clarendon locale when we were doing the raw diet with the dogs. ETA: Getting the spacing thing down finally!
  23. Where are you staying and how far are you willing to travel? Others probably have better suggestions, but I was reminiscing on The Berghoff when I just found out they closed! I always recommend going there for a good brew just because it's a Chicago landmark sort of thing, but I did find a substitute/newly reopened Berghoff Cafe.
  24. Grew up on ketchup shrimp myself, even though we're not Cantonese. Mayo shrimp only works well if you sweetened it. I think last time I made it I added honey to it, which made a huge difference to the last mayo shrimp I had...
