  1. Commence the ramps backlash! And Ramps backlash snark! http://www.amateurgourmet.com/2011/04/ramps_a_dialogue.html
  2. The Takoma Farmer's market sells during the winter but I don't know how they'd view selling something that isn't local.
  3. I have a friend from out of town a few months ago who is a big fan of TLC programming and begged me to take her to Georgetown Cupcake but I put my foot down when I realized it was at least an hour long line. Sorry, it's just not going to happen. We went to baked and wired, stood in a 10 minute line and had great delicious cupcakes and felt satisfied.
  4. bi bim bap with spinach, zucchini, onions, carrots, homemade kimchi, minced beef and of course a fried egg on top. So good!
  5. Yes I drove by it en route to nava thai, it's in the same shopping plaza. There's a huge sign that said "Ren's Ramen coming soon"
  6. I had a restaurant.com coupon so I went with a group of friends after ice skating up at wheaton ice rink. We shared an order of curry puffs that were odly cold in the middle but tasty. I had The floating market soup whichdid not disappoint. Friends had pad Thai, pork noodle soup, duck noodle soup. My husband had the green curry with seafood, and said that the curry itself was pretty good the quality of the seafood was out of this world good. I enjoyed my floating market soup, very meaty spicy and delicious. I didn't taste any sweet notes in it though. The thai iced coffe/iced tea was very good. Service was prompt and observant, my water glass was never left empty I'd have a hard time deciding if I like Ruan Thai over Nava Thai. I'd like to come back and try some of Nava's duck dishes. Also worth a trip is the thai market next door, I got siracha, sweet chili sauce, several thai curries, rice noodles and spring roll wrappers for 12 bucks. It was crazy to see how much these items get marked up in a regular grocery store, everything was at least 1.00-3 dollars cheaper.
  7. Well I've been dreaming of going to Honey Pig for a while and I finally made it! I went to their Elliott City location and ordered bulgogi, spicy thick pork belly and a side of bi bim bap and green onion seafood pancake. Everything was amazing except for the pancake. I've made green onion pancakes before and I like mine to be a little more crunchy and less puffy. Theirs reminded me almost of a funnel cake, it was so fluffy. I really liked their bi bim bap. I've had that dish before at a Japanese restaurant and it was great to taste the real thing at a Korean restaurant. I just need to find a place that makes it in a hot stone bowl with the fresh egg. (as per the receipt you can specify the done-ness of your egg but since I didn't know to specifcy it they just cooked it all the way through. Next time I know to ask for a runny yoke!). All that food plus soju was 50 dollars. The service was great and attentive but there's a few things I didn't even know i could or should ask for. So I know for next time, are you supposed to eat the banchan at the beginning of the meal or during? And if you order the spicy pork belly can you ask them to throw rice on the pan? I wasn't sure.
  8. Anyone been to the TenPenh on the patio? They serve a filipino style roasted pig on the patio with sides for 29 dollars a person. I'm intrigued but I wanted to know if anyone else has tried it.
  9. Yeah I really enjoyed Udupi but I guess I should try out Woodlands now. Most of my favorite Udupi dishes made it over to the Tiffin's menu (utthapams, chana batura) but not my all time favorite spinach kofta, which is these amazing vegetable dumplings served in a spinach gravy. I'm not sure where I can find another restaurant that makes it.
  10. Well I found out today that Udupi is closed. The entire strip mall is being torn down to build a walgreens. I spoke with the owner (who also owns tiffins) and he said that they had merged the two menus so now tiffins has more vegetarian options. Kind of a bummer, although the buffet has some new items like iddlys and they give out complimentary dosa and naan when you order the buffet.
  11. tardy to the party to say that Virginia just copies off of NC style BBQ.
  12. My husband and I took my mother in law and family here for mother's day brunch. The service was impeccable, and it was one of the best brunches I've ever had. Highlights were the English scones with clotted cream, bacon, quiche, maple glazed shrimp with corn cakes (kind of a sweet version of shrip and grits) and chocolate french toast.
  13. I went to Brasserie Beck last night. The food was excellent - my tabled shared the frites, and then the spinach mushroom Gruyère crepe, an asparagus salad and duck entree plus several beers. The service was really weird at the beginning. The host sat us down without menus and then we were ignored for about 15 minutes before someone got up and tried to track down a server for us. They need to update their website, there were a few things on their website I had wanted to try (pea soup with veal meatballs) that were missing from the real menu.
  14. I went to Founding Farmers this weekend and enjoyed myself. The servers have stopped doing the whole spiel about their LEED certified building and farm to table philosophy. The highlights from dinner were the cocktails (my dark and stormy was perfect) Potato Chip with dips (the pimento cheese was excellent as was the green goddess dip) and my friends fried chicken and waffles. (Was somewhat amazed that it came with chicken, waffles, mac and cheese and vegetables, all for 16 dollars.) The shrimp and grits was also tasty. My pasta was a bit too salty but still good overall. I'd definitely go back. Oh and the hand dryer was pretty cool.
  15. I tried their potato gnocchi the other night. I think I might have overcooked it a smidge but even so it was far superior to any of my gnocchi attempts and way way superior to the processed potato bombs you get at the store.
  16. Made two trips out to Denver last month. We went to Paradise Bakery on a whim and found it to be pretty good. They included free cookies which were tasty. Atlanta-Hatfield on the other hand was just plain vile. On the return journey I had a less than hour to make my connection, while changing terminals with 4 people, all their carryons and an extraodrinarly well behaved 8 month in tow. We had about 10 minutes to grab food to eat on the plane. I decided to stop at moes since the whole family likes fake-mex. We were treated to a lovely exchange reminiscent of Monty Python's cheese shop. They were out of every meat except chicken, half their toppings and salsa. DEN ATL
  17. The mayorga has set up shop in the drifting nomad/savory cafe location. I hope it does better than the last two coffee shops. Any word on what is going to happen to the old mayorga location? Is it going to be sold or will it stay in business?
  18. I went there the other week. Some of the veggie dishes were excellent, especially the carrots and roasted cauliflower
  19. I think that's a common problem across the board, the lack of researching additional solutions to a problem, just assuming one solution fits all.
  20. I used to be a very picky eater as a child and that continued through adolescences. It didn't help that I'm a supertaster. I just wanted to eat things like plain chicken (no skin or sauces) plain pasta, cheese pizza (and yes my parents explained to me a thousand times how silly I was for refusing to eat tomato sauce on pasta but happily eat it on pizza, virtually no vegetables, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches nearly every day of school. Eventually I started to branch out and now I eat just about everything - except seafood. I am not sure if it's the smell or the texture but I can't stand seafood. I will eat tastes of it if someone else orders it for me but I think I have a mental block against eating it in a meal. I also don't like olives or cherries. A few months ago I was at Wegmans and I tasted some kind of cheese with olives tapanade and I physically spat it up into a napkin because I couldn't stand the taste. I think the big turn around for me was that I love to cook. When I was a kid I would pour over cookbooks and be fascinated by the recipes but then realize that I wasn't going to eat about 90% of was was in the cookbooks. Also I moved away from my parents so I could buy my own food and make my own decisions about what I wanted to eat. I know of several people who are extremely picky. My aunt is so picky she thinks everything is spicy, even the mildest foods are too much for her. I had a co-worker who hated everything except ramen noodles and the like.
  21. hosting a get together with friends: guacamole pico de gallo chips spiced nuts carnitas spicy chicken homemade tortillas (cheese/sour cream/ hot sauce) brownies very good night!
  22. I enjoyed their bangars and mash. The sausage appears to be made in house.
