  1. I heard about this via Todd Klinman in the Washingtonian. I think it also got a shout out in the recent cheap eats edition of the magazine as well. Anyway I was craving tacos and convinced my husband we needed to do a midweek taco run. We got the lengua, chorizo and al pastor taco. All three were great. We also got a chille relleno. it came fried order and was accompanied by beans rice and these delicious, possibly homemade tortilas. (Tacos seem to be made with store bought tortillas that were thinner). Meal was accompanied by radishes and a trio of delicious spicy salsas. My favorite was a salsa verde with avocado Place is very affordable. Service was quick and friendly. 7811 Riggs Rd, Hyattsville, MD 20783
  2. Also when you pay with a credit card it shows up as Scion. Their house made noodles are pretty great. I also like the fried chicken bao which is served with Daikin slaw and siracha mayo
  3. Definitely hipster Asian joint (in the vein of Momofoku or Toki Underground). I had their steamed pork dumplings and pork bao. Their bao were just like Momfoku in that steamed bun with a taco type presentation vs traditional enclosed bao. Quality was decent. I'm definitely interested in going back and trying their house made noodles. http://www.nainaisnoodles.com/ 1200 East-West Highway Silver Spring, MD 20910 301-585-6678
  4. I had another great buffet lunch at Curry leaf. They have dishes at their buffet I've never had before: hard boiled egg curry, . Raghda patties with a channa masala, kadhi pakoras which were these vegetables dumplings in sour curry sauce. Their mango kulfi for desert is also really good.
  5. I'm really liking curry leaf these days. It's a restaurant for omnivores but the vegetarian dishes really shine.
  6. Highlights from my visit The awesome - Smoked Lamb - Liver Mousse - N'duja - Chocolate souffle with goat's milk gelato (Note- I wish my server or the menu mentioned the 10-15 wait time on it. I'm used to having to wait on a souffle so it was no big deal but the lack commentary about it made me wonder if urban butcher had found some secret to making a super speedy souffle. Turns out, no) Pretty good -Cheeses (Camembert, Cheddar and cream blue) - Arugula and Strawberry Salad - Bacon and Maple gelato (Dean I agree with you about it being ice cream not gelato) Service was fine. We were served some iffy to bad wine but the server replaced it no problem. Cocktails were okay.
  7. My husband took me here for our 6th anniversary. We'd never done a big multi-course 3 hour long fancy pants dining experience and I must say L'Auberge Chez Francois delivers that and then some. I actually thought the service was very attentive and great. I really enjoyed the food. We had Amouse-Bouche-Lentil Soup. with cream and sherry It was probably the most amazing lentil soup I've ever had. They also had the most perfect garlic toast fingers to accompany it. Appetizers Scallops with caviar and mushrooms Duxelle Crepe with truffle sauce Salad course Salad with duck (only part of the meal I didn't like, at that point I should have gotten a plain salad) Dinner Alsatian feast - sauerkraut, sausages, pork, duck confit and foie gras (my first time eating foie gras. amazing) veal scaloppini with Virginia ham, jumbo lump crabmeat, and mushroom cream sauce, came with homemade spatezle Desert Raspberry Souffle (never had that either! Wow!) Vanilla creme brulee Great experience. Not one I'm likely to repeat any time soon. That's why you should always have sex first then eat. Works for me.
  8. Yeah same chef as Upupi. They have the Spinach Kofta balls that I have never been able to replicate at home or find on any other indian menu so they've earned my loyalty for life.
  9. I enjoyed my trip there and I need to go back soon! I had Taco Bamba "” Skirt Steak, Chorizo, Grilled Guacamole, Chicharrones Bomba- cotija filled metaballs Al Pastor. All were uniformly great. I really liked the housemade salsas. Next time I'm trying their lengua and Chorizo. Also want to try their tortas!
  10. I've been several times They have a lot of unusual dishes you don't see at many other Indian restaurants such as tamarind rice, these incredible vegetable balls in a tomato cream sauce and chicken in a lentil sauce.
  11. My husband and I visited the silver spring location. We had a torta, tamale and several tacos (goat, chorizo, al pastor, chicharron in verde sauce and lengua) The chorizo and goat were the winners, lengua was okay and the pastor was dry. The chicharron was too chewy for my tastes. We ate outside so didn't know about free salsa. They gave us this delicious avocado salsa that I enjoyed. We will definitely be coming back for tacos in the future!
  12. I went to Daikaya last night with a group of friends. We lucked out into getting the back room which offers a lot of privacy (although it had a sliding door we kept sliding it shut an the staff kept either opening the door or sort of lurking in on us to see if we were done.) The back room is wall papered with pictures from Japan but a few papers are already falling down The ramen was very good. I think my personal preference is more to Toki over Daikaya but I enjoyed Daikaya's ramen all the same. I had the shoyu with nitamango (which were a highlight of the meal, the way the yoke was almost a jellied was fantastic) and pork belly. I was curious about trying it with corn or butter but I ended up not getting it. Their gyoza are superb, really excellent fillings and griddled perfectly to have that statisfying crunchy griddle mark. The self-service condiments and water pitcher is very smart. There was this mystery container that had some kind of red pepper flakes that made the broth pleasantly spicy.
  13. My husband recently discovered this place. The food is amazing They serve tacos, pupersas, fajitas and other delcious treats. You must get the lengua tacos, the meat is tender and flavorful. The tacos come with harboiled egg, avocado, lettus and onions. Really delicous! Tacos were super cheap, something like My favorite pupusa was the mixed one with pork, cheese and beans. The loroco was also decent. They come with a delicous vinegary coleslaw Husband got the shrimp fajitas that came with roasted vegetables and homemade corn tortillas. They were super thick. Tacos are about 1.50, pupusas are 2. a meals of two pupusas, a taco and fajitas set us back 18 bucks. Not bad! Fair warning the service is sloooooow. Bring a crossword puzzle, book or a charming companion to talk to because you will probably have a half hour wait minimum. Also had a service snafu where they gave us the wrong check but we got that sorted out. La Chiquita 940 E West Hwy Takoma Park, MD 20912 (301) 270-0366
  14. They are expanding to Takoma and Brookland. http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/housingcomplex/2013/02/27/busboys-comes-to-takoma-brookland-may-be-next-could-anacostia-follow/
  15. I think that people reference Chipotle because it has a certain higher cache than Subway. Also Chipotle uses a certain restraint in having a limited options for meat, salsas and other fillings, a model that Roti follows. while Subway emphasizes having dozens of options.
  16. well back on the subject of food, I've eaten there twice in the past month. The food wasn't very memorable. The first time I had a Ham & Brie Baguette served with the unremarkable fries and a delicious garlic aioli. The second time I had a turkey avocado on a croissant with quinoa salad seved as a side dish. Both of the sandwiches were good but not especially memorable. The highlight was my husband ordering these amazing ham and swiss cheese crepes served with this addictive honey mustard sauce
  17. First off a disclose, I was invited to the "friends and family" preview because I know the owner. Menomale is a new Neapolitan pizzeria in the Brookland/Rhode island avenue neighborhood. The first thing you see when you walk in the door is their huge brick oven that can cook a pizza in less than a minute and two pizzaolos making pizza. You round the corner to see a small cozy restaurant and bar. The bartender is a self professed "beer nerd" and serves all kinds of unusual brews such as Japanese wit beer, florin sours. They also plan to serve wine and mixed drinks but they haven't gotten all the t 's crossed and i's dotted on the liquor licence. For dinner we sampled their margarita pizza which is a great exercise in simplicity- a dough made from bread, salt, water and air, sauce made from marzano tomatoes and salt, topped with a restrained amount of buffalo mozzarella, basil and (at my behest) a sprinkling of Parmesan and chopped garlic. When the restaurant opens they will have more topping options including different cheese (after I had sung the praises of ricotta on pizza), vegetables and smoked meats. Since one of the owners is vegan they also had a pretty decent vegan cheese option. My one complaint is that they might want to hold off on the sauce a little so the pizza is less soggy. The flavors were delcious, the crust was chewy, sauce was sweet but not overly so and the garlic added a great bit. Besides pizza the Menomale plans to serve salads, calzones, brick oven sandwich and deserts. They are working on the final details as well as getting a liquor licence so they hope to be open within a month.
  18. I went with a group of friends on Saturay which was a bit of a mistake because the seating arrangements are flush with the wall so you can talk to your neighbor one or two down but that's it. I guess that you're supposed to hunker down and eat your soup. Of course when the food is as good as Toki's who needs conversation? We put our names down at 6ish and then waited at fruitbat which is an excellent underrated bar on H street with fantastic concoctions. We were seated at Tokis at about 7:45ish. Husband and I ordered pan fried dumplings which were okay, these pork fat fried noodles (amazing!) and shared a bowl of the Hakata classic with their hot sauce and an extra egg. It was a rainy, dour spring night, my throat was a bit inflamed from seasonal allergies so the soup was a perfect antidote. I don't have a lot of experience with ramen but I found the broth to be a bit oily/fatty until we used the siracha to cut the fat a bit. I kept drinking the broth spoonful by spoonful. I noticed most of my friends just ate the noodles and didn't drink the broth so maybe it was too fatty for them too.
  19. I went to Graffiato for my birthday. I think Mike really likes pistachios, they were served gratis as a snack and were also in the very delicious bone marrow (along with lemon, bacon and bread crumbs.) The bruseel sprouts with egg, pancetta and maple were a bit of a mixed bag, the sprouts and sauce were fantastic but the pancetta didn't have enough influence on the overall flavor and the egg seemed extraneous. In reading about the dish on the menu I thought the egg would be poached or soft boiled so you'd get some yolk-y goodness but instead it was just the egg whites sprinkled over the sprouts. It was sort of weird. The White House Pizza was excellent. I also ordered three cheeses for dessert, the Powlet was especially good. Oh and just as a bit of an odd note, I mentioned on my open table reservation and to the water that it was my birthday but that was totally went unacknowledged, no cake or candle or anything. Usually at most restaurants you get some kind of acknowledgement. Very odd. Other than that the service was fine.

  21. Well my husband's credit card mailed him a gift certificate to the Palm. It seems legit and doesn't seem like there are any strings (other than using said credit card to pay for whatever isn't covered by the certificate because I'm guessing they are banking on people spending more if they have gift certificate) Anyway anyone ever had the Italian food at the Palm? I'm not really a big steak eater so I guess I'd order an Italian dish, crabakes or a salad and one of those delicious sides.
  22. I just got back from Hills and I am about to slip into a food coma. i had the moist brisket and thought it was too fatty, I couldn't finish my 1/4 sized portion, My cousin got beef barbecue which I liked a little better. My group also ordered the ribs (too salty) My whole group each ordered two sides. The potato salad, collard greens and coleslaw were especially tasty. The corn pudding, texas caviar and cornbread were good but not amazing. Anyway out of all the sides we couldn't finish a single one. I wish they offered a smaller portion than their 8oz offerings. Fortunately they gave us caps for each of the sides to take home.
  23. Asian style sandwiches - grilled chicken marinating in a soy, garlic, ginger, honey marinade, with pickled carrots and daikon, quick pickled cucumbers, siracha mayonnaise, onion jam. served with napa cabbage, cilantro and sesame seed coleslaw. Very delicious! Inspired by this recipe(s) http://weekofmenus.blogspot.com/2009/11/asian-sandwiches-allowing-others-to.html
