  1. We generally get good use out of PriorityPass when traveling internationally. US its rare to have good access. We have enjoyed the airfrance lounge at IAD as long as we arrive early. Other places like JFK it really hit or miss depending on what terminal you are in, we enjoy the contact lounge in the delta terminal.
  2. Just saw the sign in the window this is coming into 1401 K ST NW, into a former Subway sandwich shop. Its very close to my work at 14th and L so very happy. They are doing build out right now and don't have paper up on the windows so it feels like they are trying to get it open quickly. Lots more details here, its from the Pinkberry founder: https://www.washingtonian.com/2017/05/09/california-poke-restaurant-honeyfish-opening-soon-in-downtown-dc-and-rockville/
  3. Thanks is it part of the seafood road show? Where in the store is it?
  4. Has anyone see poke at the close in VA Costco's? We check when we go to Pentagon City and others but have not seen it.
  5. Interesting, so that leaves Sam Adams at 4-billion barrels in the club. Guess that makes sense for the BA since they are a major sponsor at Craft Beer events like Savor but I guess the point is to identify vendors that are not part of the major global conglomerates.
  6. Got the Onolicious bowl via MealPal on Friday. Great value, lots of tuna. I didn't care for the fake crab salad which was sort of sweet and mayonnaise. The Ahi tuna marinated with seaweed, lotus root, ginger, sesame, scallion and onion was a bit bland. I think I'd enjoy a spicy version much more. Also the fish had lines of hardish white stuff in it, so its not been trimmed to be soft. Overall it seemed like a good value but again its a bowl with a ton of other stuff so its a completely different experience than real poke. I was surprised that they were willing to sell the bowl via Meal Pal for a sub $6 price. The line at 11:30 was very short.
  7. I work very close and believe the Taylor Gourmet is in another space and that the Le Pain Quotidien is in the entire DC Coast space. Also there was a Subway restaurant that was on the 14th Street side that is now closed - I have to believe that that shops closure was due to the new tenants in some forum.
  8. For drinks at sunset visit the Park bar on the top of a parking structure. They converted the top of the parking structure into a nice area with lots of trees and plants with views of the tops of buildings, some church steeples and a bridge. I think we had a pitcher of sangria and some sort of nibbles. To get to the park you enter the street level of the parking garage and take the elevator to the top. There is no indication of the venue at the street level. Also years ago we enjoyed our dinner at Casa do Alentejo , in our last trip we walked by and didn't go in which was a mistake because stopping at random restaurants did not result in a better meal. The building is dedicated to the Alentejan culture and has a nice tile interior. As you can tell by the reviews the place is not fine dining, its the type of dining you would expect from a cultural club, basic good food from a specific region in Portugal.
  9. I hope they have a stronger beer menu then just Budweiser. When we went in Memphis we were happy to see various local brews on the menu.
  10. Every few months my wife and I stop in for the chafing dish food of the day. On the weekend its some sort of beef curry. We always get one order to go with rice and some veggies plus two breads (for me). One to go order is enough food for us to eat our fill once with enough left over for another meal (we are not huge eaters these days). Even though the food in the chafing dish is ready to be slopped into the to go container there is always a bit of a wait. By far our preference is whatever the special of the day is in those chafing dishes over a kabob. I will say the Moby Dick in Bethesda has much better quality daily specials, but since I no longer work up there Kabob Palace is a good alternative.
  11. The article mentions it as well, but isn't Poke really just supposed to be fish (with some flavors), which could be on a bed of rice? Most of those dishes look like basically a rice bowel with tons of toppings and maybe some poke added. I wonder if its finances or local tastes that make them add all that other random "stuff" for toppings. At least Hula Girl's website http://hulagirlbarandgrill.com/ shows a picture of poke (fish with a light sauce plus some spices) with some chips to the side - that's more of what I'd expect when ordering poke.
  12. On twitter Dean promotes the delivery service Caviar quite a bit. I've wondered if he likes it better than the other delivery services or if its just a profitable affiliate offering to promote?
  13. We had HH at Gaijin on Saturday mostly eating apps and drinking everyone was quite happy, I've added my review.
  14. We showed up at Gaijin at 6:55 PM with friends on Saturday because we were close and it has a happy hour until 7 PM. The waiter was very friendly and said don't worry about it when we mentioned we wanted to get our orders in before happy hour ended, he said we were there and it was no rush. That provide to be true as one member of our party got a second sake probably 30 minutes later and it was still on happy hour pricing for him. We basically had apps for four people with drinks and later one ramen. We ordered Kimchi (*2) $1/hh ok size plate for the price and good flavor it was all eaten, Tater Takoyaki (*2) $6/hh - basically tater tots with two different sauces on it and some bbq pork (like pulled pork) good hh food - don't really recall the sauce, Oishii Oishii Steamed Buns (fried chicken) $6/hh the fried chicken looked good but don't remember feedback from the eater, and fried pot stickers under another name $3/hh for four which were tasty good at the happy hour pricing but not worth $5. For drinks I think it was $2 off beer, sake and wine. But then they had an anytime menu of select mix drinks for $5 (maybe they took Don's feedback to heart)! So one person had the little drink glass jars of sake (*2) on hh, two of us had the mixed drinks and one a large Japanese beer on hh. Drinks were small but fairly priced. Everyone was happy with both the food and the drink. I was the only one that was up for Ramen and I ordered the Spicy Tonkotsu - which was VERY tasty, it was a creamy like broth (but still dark) it felt like it had coconut milk or some other ingredient to give it a nice creamy spicy taste. Three of us tasted it and everyone enjoyed the broth. I don't eat that much broth because of the salt so my wife took care of eating all the broth. The staff was very friendly and were welcoming back a lot of people. The yelp reviews on the place was about three stars, probably because people who are driving around the metro area for food were disappointed comparing it to X other Ramen place, but from our experience we were very happy. The combo of nice people, tasty food and very well priced drinks made for a nice happy hour. Everyone would be happy to return.
  15. Most of the stories say the flight was overbooked. From what I've read the flight was not overbooked. The flight was boarded and either during boarding or after crew showed up and said they needed to get on the flight. This should have been handled prior to boarding. Its a failure of the crew the showed up, its a failure of the ground staff, its a failure of person scheduling loads, its a failure of whomever is supposed to make sure the crew get to where they need to go, and even more its a failure of the local law enforcement. (I don't see it as a passenger failure, not everyone is versed in travel law and would know that you have no rights whatsoever on the plane.) Finally it is an issue where law enforcement is able to inforce contact law. I understand how the captain should have total control in the air but now even at the gate you are at risk if you don't understand or choose not to follow crew orders. In Cabo one year we were downgraded from business class to coach on a coach flight which I upgraded with miles. They found us in the lounge and its a difficult situation but I knew that I could do nothing about. I completely understand why someone would not know that the airline can do whatever they want to you including having you forcibly removed you from the airplane.
  16. Nicecream was at a yelp event last year and the owner was really playing up the custom diet friendly product he makes. Since it can be frozen to order he is able to make lactose free, xxx free ice cream, for example he can use juice only, or almond milk in place of milk products. For that reason I could see if having a better than your average ice cream shop following.
  17. I'm guessing but generally someone who is "bumped" from a paid/award Hawaiian flight would have a future flight voucher in the range of $500 since its such a long flight, plus they would have been put up in a hotel overnight. Had they been "bumped" I'm fairly sure that she would have said something along the lines of never again for a $500, I'm never flying United again so that's worthless to me... Now there is a chance they missed their flight and they were not "bumped" but missed the flight and thus were on standby, but again I'd expect to here some blame vocalized in that case. Plus the fact there were 50! standby passengers made me assume that a huge number of pass flyers were trying to get on the flight.
  18. I'm amazed at how this has blown up, especially as a travel blog reader when I knew within about four hours that they were flight pass users who abide by other rules than paying customers. Except for the people behind them in line who dressed their girls in dresses not knowing the full story of what was happening in front of them. Side note flew back from HNL last week to ORD and had a couple next to me. The woman was irate with United talking about how they were bumped a few times in the previous days and there was space on the planes etc... Damn United. (There had been announcements that the flight was on weight restrictions from HQ and they would get as many people as they could on the flight.) (There were 50+ people on the standby list for our flight.) It was fairly clear to me that they were on passes and thus were not "bumped" but dealing with the normal hell of going to a top vacation spot in prime season. The man was not responding to the Damn United comments making me think he is probably either the pass hold or family of the pass holder and was trying to keep it together so as to not impact his pass privileges...
  19. The rule with GE Interviews is to keep checking for close appointments that work with your travel schedule. There might be a six month wait but then the next day you might find an appointment the next week - and this works nationwide so if you travel you might find a convenient appointment somewhere that you have a few hours free. I few years ago my wife and I did the interview in Seattle on the way to Alaska back when the wait in the DC area was very bad.
  20. Your best bet is a company like InternetBrands which acquired forums like FlyerTalk but I think you would need a "hugely" number of active users.
  21. It should be noted that ThePointsGuy is really a brand, his blog was sold years ago to Bankrate.com https://skift.com/2014/12/01/the-blurring-lines-between-banks-and-travel-writers/ So what might feel like a personal blog is really part of a larger publishing operation. I personally feel Brian's brand is one of the worse as far as hobnobbing and catering to the large advertisers (credit card issuers). One year at an industry event I sat at a table with him and the affiliate manager for Barclay's bank when they were rolling out the Arrival card line and they were thick as thieves. There are huge opportunities to people with good credit but some people do their affiliate hawking of cards better than others, Brain's brand is very successful but his content and brand turns me off. However I do still read content on the site at times.
  22. We really enjoyed Nüetnigenough in Brussels proper close to the pissing statue. Its at the top of yelp. It has a small quality beer selection, I had a nice sour aged Kirk and my wife had some sort of abbey ale. We both enjoyed our meals, I had the jambonneau dijonnaise (ham hock in mustard sauce) and my wife the stoemp saucisses,FONDUE DE poireaux, we enjoyed both and had left overs from each plate to stick in French bread for the next few days' lunch..
  23. I've gotten lunch a few times there via MealPal and once with cash (Falafel, Chicken and Beef bowels, paid cash for Chicken). The food is good, its a heavy bowel and I'm happy to have it as an option. They have a lot of toppings including many spicy sauces. I like it much more than skwr.
  24. Dino's in shaw has some promotions going on that support the cause: http://dinoinshaw.com/event/inauguration-day-womens-march/ I visit rarely but always watch his offers because he does good marketing on twitter with lots of details on the promotions and usually they are bundled so they look like a good offering. Also not food but Wooly Mammoth Theater 641 D St NW is open for bathrooms and heat and they are within walking distance of the mall. Also Kabob Palace is always a good option once you have metroed back to pickup the cars in crystal city. My wife and I always get the weekend beef curry to go and eat it over a few days. http://kabobpalaceusa.com/
