  1. On Tom B.'s recommendation, I had the crispy sea bass recently ... it's prepared in a celery/oyster sauce (IIRC) that Tom described as "a taste of the sea". He was right. Yum. Light, and for me, ideal for the spring-y weather we're having But, you really can't go wrong at Corduroy. Kind of depends on what you're in the mood for.

While this is certainly true, I have it on good authority that loud and raucous cheering may be frowned upon. So if your FILTB is really an avid fan (something that I most certainly do not judge, as I've been known to yell and shake my fist at the tv quite a bit during late March/early April ), you may prefer to choose another venue...
  4. Maybe more casual than you'd prefer, but I hosted a bridal shower a couple of years ago at the Teaism in Penn Quarter. Although not a private room, we used about half of the downstairs space and the layout is conducive to it feeling semi-private, at least. The folks there were super-easy to deal with, and I was able to put up balloons and other decorations, and bring my own background music. I worked with the catering department there, and was easily able to have a spread that wound up being under $30/person, all included.
  5. My memory may be slightly off, but I think I spent approx $25 with tax and tip, no alcohol. We're not talking cheap, but we are talking tasty...
  6. Me - not so much. But who knows, it could still happen.
  7. By chance I stopped by Central for its inaugural lunch service today, and all I can say is this - the raves about the corned beef and hamburger are deserved. Well-deserved. It is both a good and bad thing that I work nearby.
  8. Your point is valid, but don't overstate your case. If you're at a firm where 2600-3000 billable hours a year is necessary to stay on track, you may be at the wrong firm. Sure, everyone who chooses the law firm path puts in a year or two like that when things are busy or partnership is right around the corner ... but it truly is not the norm over time, not here in DC anyway. Which is not to say that life at a law firm is all flowers and candy, don't get me wrong ...
  9. Chamomile tea. And lots of it. A hangover that lasts past 5pm on a Wednesday can hardly be considered a good thing. Although it does indicate that much fun was had Tuesday night ...

Comedy. My "spin" landed on "Skip Lunch" ... that can't be right...
  11. I haven't been in nearly a year (very much enjoyed my meal then), but I sent a friend and her visiting-from-out-of-town mother there last week, and they had nothing but good things to say. ETA: I don't remember precisely what we ate back in April, but if my memory serves, we enjoyed some sort of Austrian cheese/fava bean crostini and a smoked fish dish of some sort... No idea if those dishes are still on the menu, nor any memory of what else we ate. I also had a nice glass of gruner veltliner.
  12. In my case too ... I did nothing more than a quick edit. mktye is an organizational genius!
  13. Wow. If I had a car, I'd be here on a regular basis. The sun-dried beef and crispy basil and honey duck would become my go-to dishes. The pad see-ew is the definition of comfort food on a cold day. I'm having one of those rare moments when I almost (almost!) wish I lived in the 'burbs...
  14. What a great post, Jlock, and an accurate description of my recent night at Blue Duck as well. The food ranged from bland and unseasoned (the artichoke soup) to average but unmemorable (although the apple pie, that was tasty); the service, too stuffy given the family-style nature of the place; the atmosphere, surprisingly cold (both literally and figuratively). There was nothing particularly bad about my evening there (and the company was fantastic), but nothing would hasten my return either. Except, perhaps, a G+T (from a bottle, not the gun ) with my favorite G+T companion...
  15. I like the bialys from Kossar's Bialys myself ... and if you bring some back next time you're in NYC, perhaps you could hide away a few extras for me??
  16. So is misspelling "bagel" So very true. If I could find a decent bialy in DC, I'd be able to stop carting back dozens from my trips to visit family in NY or NY-South (otherwise known as South Florida).
  17. We were there over the weekend, and warmed up with dill, ginger-lemongrass, and chili pepper aquavit. If you try the chili pepper, be prepared for spicy. One of us tossed back quite a bit at once, and his face turned a bit red... The other two of us preferred the dill which, as you said, was deliciously mellow. And the Baltika beers ... I'd certainly go back for more.Food was also delicious, particularly an eggplant dip appetizer nicely garnished with pomegranate seeds, smoked Baltic sprats served on buttered bread with surprisingly tasty tomato, mussels in an aquavit and cream broth (dip the accompanying bread in the broth!), and kielbasa with saurkraut. The vibe made me smile, and this is a place that will join my rotation of places to go, despite not being terribly convenient.
  18. Amen. As long as the gimlet is made with real lime juice, and not Rose's...
  19. mmm... Citadelle... now that makes a good G+T...
  20. And today I learned that, when you're seated at a communal table, not only do you have to take care with what news you're sharing with your friend, but you also are distracted by the conversations swirling so closely around you.But the food! I'm surprised I'd never been here before, and will definitely have to work into the regular lunch rotation. Steamed pork buns were juicy and fresh with cilantro, the fried noodles with vegetables and tofu were delicious, and (although perhaps a little dry) I thought the house special chicken was excellent for its crispy skin and tasty soy-based sauce.
  21. And Wednesday, at the bar, but not Thursday, in the dining room. The early crowds yesterday were law firm happy hours excited about the new option in the area. I agree with lackadaisi, by the way, that this is going to fill a real need for the neighborhood. My coworkers are already planning their return...
  22. Not on the bar menu. Didn't see whether the bar menu was different from the dining room menu, but like lackadaisi, my sense is that it's the same.
  23. Delray Beach Celebrated my grandmother's 80th birthday at a lunch this weekend at Henry's restaurant in Delray Beach (or was it Boca?) My expectations were low (I haven't had many good meals in the area over the years) but my seared tuna salad was cooked properly and its Asian dressing was flavorful, the offer of wasabi on the side was welcome, and the only oddity was the large chunks of pineapple that really didn't belong in the dish. And our server, faced with a table of 16 -- six under the age of 60 and ten over 75 -- handled the situation with ease and a smile, keeping the wine and champagne glasses at our end of the table full, and answering the same questions multiple times for those who couldn't hear so well at the other end of the table. And when my grandmother declined a dessert, saying she'd just taste my apple cobbler (watching her girlish figure ), he had the presence of mind to bring her her own apple cobbler, complete with a birthday candle. Not a place I'd travel out of my way for, but certainly kept our motley crew happy.
  24. This is a nice place to duck into for coffee and a bagel on a day you're "working from home". Comfy couches, friendly service, and free wifi -- if I lived closer, I'd be a regular here. The only disappointment is that Le Cupcake is on vacation til January 4, so my annual quest for the ideal cupcake continues...
