  1. I'm a probably, depending on transportation ... no idea what I'll bring.
  2. Well, I was hoping for vaguely more interesting than the chain restaurants. Something that out of town visitors who are used to chains won't be scared of, but that I'll still be happy with. Not sure if that exists... Thanks, though - we may wind up at one of your suggestions...
  3. Help! Need a decent place to eat near Tysons for this evening - unadventurous diners (Chinese is about as adventurous as they'll go) but I'm involved too so would love for it to be at least somewhat interesting. Am afraid Korean or Persian (per the dining guide suggestions) might be too "out there".
  4. Heading back to NOLA for the first time in about two years ... can those of you who've been there more recently than I help a girl out? I'm looking for one meal that shows a Yankee what New Orleans cooking is (at any level of casual-ness to fancy-ness), and one nice meal (think Cuvee, August, etc.). Not necessarily mutually exclusive. Also, any can't-misses for drinks, music, people-watching, etc. I'm afraid my New Orleans knowledge has become dated
  5. I'll be in Scottsdale/Phoenix this weekend. I think my friends have some food options lined up, but just in case, any more tips? And any non-food tips? I think I'll have a free afternoon and any sightseeing tips would be much appreciated!
  6. homemade mushroom/prosciutto ravioli in a sage brown butter sauce mac and cheese (gruyere, cheddar, parmesan) with bacon seared sea scallops a bite of a wegman's chocolate/peanut butter tart for dessert - no time to make homemade dessert! a bit carb-heavy? sure. but a fun birthday dinner for a pasta-loving friend
  7. This is funny, you must've been right down the bar from me. We wound up picking Ulah last night for the pre-930 club/able to keep an eye on hoops meal. And while I thought the staff was kind and the decor inviting, I was unfortunately really underwhelmed by the food. My chicken panino was bad (flavorless, and something was off with the proportion of bread to filling), and the mojito chicken over risotto was also disappointing - flavorless "rum" sauce and the "risotto" was really just a gloppy pile of starchy rice. I wanted to like this place, and might like it just for a drink, but probably won't eat there again.
  8. I agree with that ... but am looking for good food and atmosphere and the ability to keep an eye on scores (kinda like what I did at Central at lunch today), not a place to watch the games. And who said I wanted to watch Big East hoops??
  9. anyone know if marvin has a tv at the bar? looking for a place in that general area to grab a bite while keeping an eye on hoops scores tonight, thought that might fit the bill.
  10. Meh. On a rare driving excursion into the depths of Virginia (at least, as far as this city-dweller is concerned), I made my first visit to Elevation Burger. And I don't get the hype. Perhaps the burgers and fries here were better before, but now they're mediocre at best. Certainly not worth the trip, and to be honest, I might've been happier with Burger King down the road. Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but to me the food at Elevation seemed completely indistinguishable from any fast food burger and fries.
  11. How funny! I went last night on my way to Dulles and was told the same sad news. Robyn retired before I got a chance to sample those cupcakes! Stacy's is still a cute little place, though, and the lemon bars are not bad...
  12. You were right ... PDT was fun, and the drinks excellent. I particularly enjoyed a drink with the word rose in its name -- other than the fact that it was made with gin, I remember very little else, but it was tasty. And the flip made with chocolate stout was like an adult chocolate milkshake, awesome. I have to say that I wasn't floored by the atmosphere, despite the cool entrance. I guess I expected something a little more sophisticated (like PX) and not a typical bar decor with animal heads on the wall. Not really a complaint - the drinks were great and being someplace that's not super crowded and where there's room to sit down was wonderful - but just not exactly what I expected. In other NY recommendations - don't go to Colors unless it's a purely political decision (wanting to support the former employees at Windows on the World). Our meal was not particularly good, the dishes all lacked depth or interesting flavors, and service was atrocious. Our server even scoffed at one of my friends when he mentioned a food allergy, saying "yeah, right, that just means you don't like that ingredient" Brunch at Community Food and Juice Bar, on the Upper West Side, however, was great. They make a delicious beet salad, great carrot/potato hash, excellent biscuits, and yummy fresh-squeezed juices (the day we were there, they had cranberry and pineapple).
  13. Looking for a recommendation for brunch/lunch on the Upper West Side. Anyone?
  14. I was avoiding the report - you know the old adage, if you don't have anything nice to say ........ So yeah, mediocre matzoh ball soup, mediocre sandwiches, awful service. Next time, I get to pick the restaurant.
  15. That place looks cooler. Unfortunately, I'm along for the ride for a friend's birthday so I am tasked with not having any input into our evening plans at all. If you know me, you know this is very difficult.
  16. Anyone know anything about a place called Colors ? I'm apparently eating there this weekend, followed by drinks at Pegu Club. I have high hopes that if they picked Pegu, the folks who picked Colors can't go terribly wrong, am I right?
  17. Thanks - I'll definitely keep those in mind for the next outing. I picked Corduroy for our first meeting, and decided that I'd demonstrate my remarkable flexibility and concern for their jetlag/food issues by letting them pick tonight. So I think Krupin's, or whatever, it is. I'll choose next time.
  18. Max's? Where's that?Problem is, the parents will be jetlagged so we're aiming for convenience to them. That means Maryland or no further into DC than Tenleytown.
  19. Oy. Now is when I wish I weren't the Jewish daughter of a couple of New Yorkers.
  20. Uh oh. I haven't been here in years and years (since it was Krupin's. Or maybe K's.). And now I'm going tonight w/ the plus one and his parents. Should I just order a big bowl of matzah ball soup and call it a day?
  21. Buck's was hit or miss last night - the shrimp and grits and steak drew nothing but raves, and the mac and cheese was delicious. But the fried chicken was missing salt and pepper, and its accompanying biscuit tasted like raw flour. I was glad my friends who had never been were eating the hits, and I was stuck with the miss. Also odd, and a touch I didn't remember from my previous visits - our server read us the menu, verbatim. As he walked away, my friend made the comment we all were thinking - "we probably could've read that ourselves".
  22. A wise man once told me Burgundy is the answer to all questions. I can't believe I forgot!
  23. I am drinking water and tea to whoever created this nasty flu bug and deemed it necessary that I get it. Make it stop. Please.
  24. That's funny, we were there last night too. I've got that flu that's going around, so my tastebuds and appetite are off, but people seemed generally pleased with their dishes - many of the same that NewFoodie and her friends had. We also had the octopus and squid ink appetizer, which was enjoyed. My dad tried the salt cod and loved it, and a friend had the pork with figs and cleaned his plate.
