  1. The sign didn't say one way or another. There were a few people at the bar and the rest of the place was empty. Like I said in the earlier post, we tried to get the bartender's attention well before the expiration of happy hour and he ignored us. Got us our drinks and it was 7:02 on the POS. If the restaurant doesn't allow any grace period or discretion on behalf of their staff shame on them. If it was the bartender being rude then shame on him. And as I stated above, the place should have some self respect and serve a German pretzel with mustard other than French's.
  2. I am sure to give praise when praise is due. This post is mostly based upon service. (Although I did order a pretzel which was served with yellow mustard--didn't want to try anything else after this). As I stated previously, this is purely based upon service and the rude bartender. Happy hour here goes until 7. The seating at the bar was full but the rest of the place was empty. About ten minutes to 7, we tried to get the attention of the bartender, but he totally ignored us. We finally got his attention and it was 2 minutes past 7. He refused to honor happy hour. Although I might get some flack on this website for this post, I cannot remember a recent experience with such rude/indifferent service. I will not go back, which is a shame because they have a great selection of German beers, not typically seen in Montgomery County.
  3. I don't think Sienna's was mentioned. In Rockville: 12303 Twinbrook Parkway. Same owner as Blue Star. Website says pizza and Mexican. http://www.sienasrestaurant.com/
  4. Had dinner here last night. We thought it was very good. As has been mentioned above, it is kid friendly. Our 4 year old had the grilled salmon from the child's menu. She chose rice and mashed potatoes as her sides. She devoured it. We started with artichoke salad and a cheese sampler. The salad was well dressed and finely chopped with some canned artichokes. It was very good and specked with chopped onion and capers. The cheese was as you would expect it, with some apple to complement the cheese. This was followed by the grilled portabella specked with goat cheese-very good flavor with an almost pesto tinge. Octopus was served with boiled potatoes and sprinkled with smoked paprika--the octopus was very tender and well seasoned. Ceviche--tilapia with red onions (we opted out of the jalapenos--wife doesn't do spicy), also pretty good. Pappas fritas--with a red sauce and aioli--very enjoyable. Some other sort of mushroom dish with garlic and olive oil. Desert was chocolate mouse cake and flan. Both were really good, but the chocolate mouse was the standout. Very rich and indulgent. Service was friendly and warm. The bill was very reasonable. We will definitely be back.
  5. I agree that they have a good selection, but you are so close to DC at that point, might as well drive 2 miles down Wisconsin to Rodmans and save some $$$. Also, you can buy Bell's and Founders in DC.
  6. My favorites are Total Wine in McLean and Rodmans, but for more obscure on-offs, try Connecticut Avenue Wine and Liquors which is just north of Dupont Circle on the Northbound side (1529 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036).
  7. I have recommended Gary Simpson in the past - he's in Rockville. Here is his website.
  8. I think you pretty much summed it up, but there is a difference between City of Rockville and Rockville. Something can be located in Rockville and have a Rockville zip code, but not lie within the City of Rockville limits.
  9. It is interesting to see how long it takes a place to hit their stride. I had some issues at the Germantown Wegmans and discussed them with the manager. My experience with the chain was from up in Syracuse (the Dewitt store to be exact). The manager said that he helped open the Dewitt store along with many of the stores here locally and that it takes him a couple of years to get the store where he wants it to be, to have a staff that really understand and buy into the company's culture. I am not sure how this translates to a restaurant, or what a sufficient time frame is, but it spoke volumes from the manager how Wegmans is invested in their stores and is willing to take the time so that it runs correctly, their way.
  10. After leaving the Germantown Wegmans yesterday, I noticed that La Tagliatella looked very empty. I pulled my car into the parking lot, got out, and it was, empty, with doors locked. I am guessing that this means the location has closed (there was no sign on the door). I peered through the windows, and the bar looked cleaned out and the tap handles removed from the taps. Was this the last open location in the area?
  11. We went to the Gaithersburg location for dinner last night. The build out is great, with a good vibe. The dinning experience was not the best. My wife ordered a greek salad, daughter grilled cheese and fries, me, the meatloaf. Everything was fine except for the meatloaf. It came out and was ice cold in the center. I asked to have it re-made, and the request was gladly taken, but we waited another 15 minutes for a new plate to come out. The server finally came by and was surprised that the new plate had not come out. It was decent meatloaf, but not memorable. The sauce did have a nice horseradish kick to it. When leaving, I mentioned the bad service to the manager, who was surprised, not in a genuine way. He dissapeared for a few minutes, came back with the server and made him apologize. I really felt bad for the waiter as it was not necessary to embarrass him like that. I would give this place a second chance, because anyone can have an off night, but the menu just wasn't that impressive to me.
  12. I am guessing the Le Cruset store around the corner is not happy about this news!
  13. Best part of this article: "At first, my biggest concern had been the cost. We live in Bethesda, so we're not destitute, though up-county we could be described as "Bethesda working poor." Our Zip code is the declasse 20814; when we visit friends in 20817, they ask who let us into their neighborhood. We bought a Cape Cod in 1996, when a house cost only slightly more than a weekend at the Inn at Little Washington." True and sad at the same time.
  14. Had dinner here last summer for the first time in forever. It was a sad scene.
  15. Another example of a new cut is a flat iron. When I started buying this several years ago, I loved it, but it seemed very familiar. Then I find out it's prior name: "minute steak" which was my mom's go to when we were growing up. I imagine she bought it because it was cheap and flavorful. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
  16. I have been hitting them up again recently. I think my prior experience with the Ma Po was a fluke. I had the ma po last night and it was fantastic. Also had the cold cucumber with sesame oil. My wife ordered the seafood chow foon. (all carryout). When I placed the order I told her Ma La and she smiled. When I brought it home, the ma po was fantastic. Not overly spicy, and not as many peppercorns as I would prefer, but it was so darn tasty. Smoky, rising heat, some numbness, one of the best versions I have had. The cucumber salad was made from english cukes, skin on, with a ton of garlic. Also very good, and a good ying to the yang of the ma po. My wifes seafood was also very nice. Shrimp, scallops, squid, with a nice mix of carrots, snow peas, and chineese broccoli. I will definitely be back again soon.
  17. Ha. I am down the street also, but never get out. I think I stood up from my desk twice today! Maybe a lunch meet up is in order!
