  1. A colleague of mine brought me back a bottle of Cachaca from his recent trip to Brazil. A quick Google search notes the most popular drink using this liquor (which I am unfamiliar with) is the Caipirinha. Anyone have a good recipe for this beverage, or any other, that uses Cachaca as its main ingredient? [ETA: perhaps this belongs in the "help needed" section...]
  2. The WaPo runs similar announcements in the weekly Thursday local section. For some bizarre reason it's my absolute favorite.
  3. This place is on the way to my in-laws, so I've driven by it dozens of times, tho never had the chance to stop in (we usually have dogs in the car, and now a baby). What my wife and I always joke about is how the place is PACKED constantly, regardless of day and time. I guarantee you drive by that place and the parking lot will be surprisingly full (of Buicks?).
  4. For fear of belaboring an uninteresting discussion, it appears we're both right, as the Timewave on the Legal website notes that its "first 'real' restaurant" was the Chestnut Hill, MA location.
  5. I thought the first one was in Chestnut Hill, MA, which I've been to several times, tho not in a couple decades
  6. Had a really good cheesesteak at Mike's Deli recently. The meat was tasty and seemed to be of good quality. It was a good-sized sub, and the meat and toppings were nicely proportioned to the size of the roll (my biggest pet peeve is when they fill the roll to overflowing -- you just cant get a good handle on it). There was also just the right amount of grease to the sub, keeping it moist, yet allowing the roll to hold up nicely (my second biggest pet peeve). My only critique is a huge one: they forgot to include the pickle slice that was supposed to come with the sub.
  7. So, does this mean there won't be a $20 Tuesday meal at Good Stuff Eatery?
  8. Wow, I didn't even know that bakeries like this existed anymore, and i can't wait to eat my way through this place. Had a couple basic donuts (glazed and chocolate frosting) that were good, but nothing special. I'd like to try the denser, cake donuts next time to see how they compare. A good bagel and cream cheese, probably as good as can be found in the DC metro area. Finally a delicious apple/pecan pie. Oh, and we sampled a couple of the breads they have on the table right when you walk in, and all were really good. Next stop: the cookie counter. This place is overwhelming!
  9. In my continuing pursuit to hit every take-out spot within 5 miles of McLean, I had really solid takeout last night at Pit-Tanza, my first time here (FChurch location). Began with the fried stuffed olives, which retained the crispiness of the breading by the time I got home (which admittedly is not far), were jumbo-sized, tasty, and a good start. The herbed tomato calzone had a flavorsome dough, good char in some areas, and was amply stuffed. The best item was the sweet tomato cream penne, which had a delicious sauce – a perfect combination of sweet and cheesy, al dente pasta, and complementary toppings. Also the staff was very courteous. I forgot to mention the coupon I had and they very generously re-processed my order, even tho I made it clear I was willing to just use it another time. I’ll definitely be back.
  10. Amoos House of Kabob -- http://www.groupon.com/deals/amoos-house-of-kabob?c=all?p=7
  11. Admittedly, i've only used their services once, but I found them to be very professional and reliable. I began our conversation thru their website estimate system (http://www.dapperductscleaning.com/), and they were prompt in responding with a reasonably priced quote. They also mentioned a coupon on their website for an additional 10% off their quote, which they didn't have to do. On the morning of the service, they arrived on time, and after I walked them thru the house so they could see exactly what work needed to be done, the price didn't deviate from the estimate one cent. They worked quickly and efficiently, and from what I watched them do, it was done well and up to industry standards. I would use them again.
  12. Oh Pizzeria Orso, i was so nice to you last time, and this is how you treat me? Two additional trips following up my last post. For the first, they didn't put any sauce on the pizza we ordered. How do you forget the sauce?! For the second, they told me it would be a 45 minute wait, which seemed reasonable since it was Sat night. I go to pick up the pizza after 40 minutes, they're ready so I take them home, and they're an absolute mess. The entire middle of the pizza and crust had basically disintegrated, grease was everywhere, and it was cold. Totally disgusting. They left the order slip on the pizza, and it notes that it came out of the oven 10 minutes after I ordered it! Why tell me there's a 45 minute wait when there was a 0 minute wait. Really damn annoying.
  13. I recently ventured to the Falls Church location and had an outstanding bird, true to name, both crisp & juicy! The sides here are what distinguishes it from EPR, my previous Peruvian Chicken mainstay. The yuca fries and fried plantains were yummy, the slaw was solid, and the regular fries, just OK. But there are actually multiple options! A whole chicken and these four sides for only $25. For quality and quantity, you cant beat that.
  14. Two great pizzas for lunch on Wednesday, really authentic, very similar to our experiences in Italy. The toppings were ample and the crust was tasty and cooked to perfection. Really, the best pizza we've had in some time and certainly the best in the area. I never went there when Pizzaman was in charge, but I don't see how they could be any better. We also got the Tomato Arancini, which was just OK (too dry for my preference).
  15. I really enjoyed my 2 take-out experiences from Cafe China, where I got typical Americanized fare. The crab rangoon were full to bursting, and appeared to be freshly made, or close enough to it. They're also the kind where the 4 ends are pulled up toward the middle, where the filling is, and not the triangle-shaped kind, which I don't think cooks as well nor holds up as well. Didn't know i was a connoisseur of rangoon, did you? The dumplings are a dense ball of meat, packed in a not-too-doughy shell, and filled with some kind of sauce--exactly the way i like my dumplings. That sauce pouring our was a pleasant surprise. The hot & sour soup was hit or miss depending on your preference. My wife thought it was bland, I would have described it as understated. The sauteed broccoli in garlic sauce was a good sized portion, and the broccoli actually came with a good amount of crunch left in it. Usually it comes as a soggy, gloppy mess, but this was cooked perfectly. The General Tso's Shrimp were a good size (I'd say 30 count), but perhaps a tad over-battered. Sauce was spot on, however, and I'd get it again. Also, a thumbs up to their website, which has a very easy on-line ordering system. There are also a few deals available depending on your order total, which the website makes very easy to apply. Now if we could get a good Italian place to replace the cleaners in between Cafe China and Amoos Kabob, this little strip would be a Murderers Row of take out.
  16. I've been in and out of National a couple times a month over the last decade, mostly for breakfast, in the C concourse. As such, I've basically eaten through all the options, and I'm here to report that they're all terrible. However, if you have no choice, then do one of two things: get a bacon-egg-cheese sandwich at 5 Guys (it can actually be tasty at times, and at least wont leave you hungry) or get a breakfast platter at Gordon Biersch, and get your eggs scrambled with cheese, then combine it in one bitefull with the homefires and sausage (the only way to get actual taste with your eggs).
  17. A recent move to McLean and a new bouncing baby boy = take out for the foreseeable future. I found Amoos to be a really passable copy of Shamshiry. That’s meant to be fairly high praise. Good sized portions, meat that was tasty and moist, and a huge bed of rice. The only thing we didn’t care for was the hummus, which was dry and pasty. Anyway, given the location and the taste/quality, I’m not sure why I’d slog my way down route 7 again.
  18. If my history on this board has shown anything, it’s that I have no standards. I love the Cheesecake Factory, frequent Ruby Tuesday’s, and just recently had a great rack of ribs at Sweetwater Tavern. A trip to Applebees is right up my alley, and to be sure, I’ve been trying for some time to convince my wife to hit up that Applebees in Falls Church. Alas, she’s not having it. I’ll keep working on it though, and if a miracle should occur, I’ll be sure to post. Last time I was at an Applebees over a decade ago, I overheard the following at a neighboring table, delivered in the most hackneyed of southern accents: “How do you spell bee? Is it B-E-E? My momma taught me how to spell when I was young.” Spectacular!
  19. I took advantage of the deal and enjoyed a very nice meal with my wife, even after having read previous posts outlining some of his questionable practices. I am a fucking monster.
  20. Morning Rush? I'd probably start out with something classic like Working Man and Fly By Night, before easing into the more mainstream stuff. But really, there's no wrong way to do it.
  21. Had the braised boneless chicken the other day and really enjoyed it....nicely cooked and seasoned, and there's plenty of it. Also tried the hot and sour shrimp, steamed dumplings and crab rangoon. These items were just terrible...old, stale, doughy, lacking taste -- and that goes for all three. I'd go back for the chicken tho... just don't know what to order with it.
  22. One of my friends came across the Mandles website (for man candles), and so we spent a good deal of drunken thought on possible candle scents. One we came up with was asparagus pee. Title? Asparagus Release. You're welcome.
  23. I, too, watched that episode, and it left me wondering if there's any place around here (or eastern seaboard) where you can get authentic soba noodles. They look good enough to go out of your way for, but perhaps not Japan-out-of-your-way.
