  1. And if you decide to order your food to go, make sure your bag contains everything you've ordered. I've gotten take-out 5 times and all 5 times they've forgotten something...ALL 5 TIMES! Now I just go to El Pollo Rico, which is always correct and is far better anyways.
  2. I also was here recently and the meal was delicious as usual. We were also incredibly impressed with the cocktails, having had the St. Germain and the Cucumber one. Does anyone know if they're willing to give out the drink recipes? I know my wife would love to attempt to re-create the St. Germain. I do have a complaint, however, which is that I found the dining room to be far too bright. The tables are nicely spaced, allowing for an intimate setting, but instead it was like being in a doctor's office...albeit a doctor's office with the Best. Food. Ever.
  3. I love McD's shakes and I don't care who knows it. I also thought that the gelato at the McD's by the Spanish Steps was some of the best i had, so take that snobs!
  4. Why must restaurants fix what isn't broken? Anyway, went to the pantry recently and they had changed my beloved tuna melt. It used to be a workingman's sandwich, served on rye with tomato, and grilled until warm -- nothing fancy, just getting the job done. It's now served open faced on focaccia, and arrived stone cold, with cheese that could barely count as being melted. It was a total disaster. The streak is over. Good meals to bad meals, the record is now 24-1.
  5. Naples I just got back from visiting my parents in Naples. When down there, we always go to Steamers, a New England-style lobster shack that was opened by a guy from Brockton, MA. The food is great, with the highlights being the clam chowder, lobster roll and fried scallops. You can get fries, onion rings, or both, and the rings are lightly battered, and remind me of those I'd get on the Cape every summer. They also have things such as steamers (duh) and clams with bellies that you typically don't find outside of NE (iirc).
  6. Stopped by RTS last night at 6pm, beat the rush, and got seated right away. It was our first time there and was sure worth the wait. My wife had the NY Strip (blk & blu) and I had the ribeye w/ horseradish sauce, both of which were excellent, even if my wife's came out med rare as opposed to med. And they were giant, so I look forward to eating it again tonight. Finally, the grilled onions were amazing! They were, like, stewed and grilled and then stewed again, or something, and were soooooooo good I found myself at times just eating the onions. Best. Onions. Ever.
  7. Ah, Porter’s…the cure for what ails ya. I’ve had parties there, football drafts, etc., and always enjoyed myself, entirely due to the cheep beer and great friendly service. While it doesn’t promote itself as a sports bar (as far as I know) it works quite well in that capacity, with multiple TVs showing multiple games for your viewing pleasure. And, when you go to the bathroom, beware of the urinal affectionately referred to as “The Moil” (tho some goyem in the bar mistakenly entitle it “The Rabbi”), because if you’re not careful, it will relieve you or more than just your foreskin.
  8. I've been here a handful of times now and I echo most of the positive things that have already been said. I will add that last time I was there (Fri), I saw most cooks handling the food with their bare hands, which I found a bit unsettling...tho only a bit, as I scarfed down my meal anyway. Whatever, I was hungry.
  9. Found ourselves in Eastern Market on Sat morning and realized it was a short walk to Belga. It was our 1st time and we were intrigued, as the menu looked quite promising. Ended up having a really disappointing brunch. My wife had eggs baked in toast (iirc) and it was so doused in butter that you could only eat a few bites before feeling nauseas. I had an omelet that tasted like nothing, even tho it was filled with ham and cheese. The ham looked like deli slices and the cheese might have been provolone...either way it was horribly bland. I'm not sure they did any doctoring to the eggs before cooking them, either. Also, I asked if they would add tomato to my omelet and the waitress said no. Apparently they only do subtractions, not additions, as the kitchen gets too busy/backed up otherwise. Of course, as I mentioned, it was early Sat. and there were all of 3 tables seated, 5 by the time we left, so I’m not sure why she wasn’t willing to accommodate me given the circumstances, and really, adding tomato is a fairly benign request. Ah well...
  10. I ate here the other night and got the lamb rogenjosh, which I've always thought was delicious. We also had an appetizer of chicken kabobs or tikka...whatever, it was cooked perfectly (nice and juicy) and came with a mild green sauce. Also had the appetizer that is grilled cottage cheese, and have always thought it was interesting and tasty (and also comes with that green sauce). My wife got the fish caldine and it was smothered in sauce, but the sauce was good, so she didn't mind (and neither did I). Obviously, if you don't like the sauce, you're SOL. The naan is good, and since each plate seems to have an abundance of sauce, there's plenty of opportunity for dipping.
  11. Had a really nice meal here with the missus on Saturday night. We started out with a cheese plate, including a blue, a cow, and a sheep. We’ve decided that we love blue cheese so much that we might just get 3 blues next time. Is that wrong? And the red and white wine jelly has always been a favorite of ours. They need to bottle that and sell it – it would be a great way to start off your morning. We then had the mussels, which came in a very tasty broth and with some toast points. To be honest, while the dish was good, I felt it was far too expensive for what we got. It was 12 mussels for $12. I admit I have no clue as to how much food costs restaurants, but even at an expensive retailer like Whole Foods you can get a 2lb bag of mussels for $3, so I assume that paying for them wholesale is cheaper. Thus, a buck a mussel? That aint right (imho, natch). For mains, I had the bass, which came with an olive tapanade, which made for an interesting combination and one I enjoyed very much. My wife had the steak and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Steak, to me, seems to have become a specialty item these days with all the steak houses out there, etc., and so I was originally wary, thinking what does a wine bar know from steak, but it was delicious. It also came with a log cabin of steak fries that were quite good. The dessert was a banana crème tart that my wife barely got to try, I liked it that much. Also, I’m a bad food sharer anyway. Oh, and local personality Tony Riali (sp?) of ESPN was at the bar with a lady friend. So they had that going for themselves, which was nice.
  12. What about dining or things to do just outside the park? I live in the area and was thinking of walking down there opening day (and other days if there are things to do) to check out the scene. I always enjoyed heading out to Fenway to grab a sausage on Yawkey Way, peruse the merch stores, people watch, etc. even if I wasn't going to the game.
  13. Went to the bar at CityZen with the missus the other night and it was a fantastic first experience. The atmosphere, service and decor reminded us of a place you might find in NYC, but priced for DC. Anyway we had a watercress soup that had some kind of garlic flan in the middle, and was very good, understated, and incredibly green. It was about as green as I’d like my food to be. We also had ravioli stuffed with baby chicken (sorry, don’t remember the technical term), the scallops and Guinea Hen (alas, not baby Guinea hen, thus ending our infanticide), all of which were delicious with the hen being one of the best fowl dishes I’ve ever had – cooked to perfection with just the right amount of fatty skin. How many restaurants do you walk out of saying you’d go back for a chicken dish? Not many, I’m guessing. For dessert we had the cheese plate, including an excellent blue cheese (Crater Blue, iirc), and the grasshopper pie, which was good though neither of us are really fans of minty desserts. For fear of sounding like a snob, as good as the food was, the highlight of the meal was actually listening to the guy next to us order cheese for his cheese plate. The bartender asks him what kinds of cheeses he prefers, and he responds that he would like “that wine cheese”. “Wine cheese?” “Yeah, you know, it’s yellow and orange and swirled together.” “I’m sorry but I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t know what wine cheese is.” The guy was asking for port wine cheese as part of his dessert plate. PORT WINE CHEESE! AT CITYZEN! We’re still laughing at that.
  14. Well, you're the Waitman, so i guess you would know, but it still strikes me as an unfair characterization.
  15. I don't think it's fair to equate people who use coupons with people who are cheap. They are, after all, only taking advantage of a promotion put in place by the restaurant itself.
  16. I went here between work and class to catch the 1st 6 innings of a Sox playoff game, and had the steak and cheese. Back then they mentioned that the liquor license issue was close to being resolved, so I wouldn't put too much stock in what they say. At any rate, I recall getting a steak and cheese, but thinking that the bun overwhelmed the meat and that it was a bit dry...but that's a knee-jerk reaction to one dish, one night, so I guess I wouldn't put too much stock in what I say. The tater tots were delicious, of course.
  17. Probably don't need more written on this thread, but i went, so... Went here the other day and got an Atomica pizza but substituted pancetta for the salami, and added garlic. When we make a pizza like this at home, we use slices of pancetta, as opposed to chunks, so when the pizza came out, we sent it back not seeing the topping. I suppose we are both to blame--them for not putting enough on there for us to recognize that it was included, and us for uncompromisingly looking for it in a different style. At the time I didn't realize the crust was sub-par, until I read earlier comments in this thread, and recalled asking my wife during the meal if we should ask for sauce for crust dipping. I guess, for me, the crust was consciously edible but subliminally awful. Other than that, it was good. The lemonade that they served was delicious, and while I'm sure it's easy to make, I remain clueless. It was lemons and seltzer and i-don't-know-what, but I'd go back for that on a hot day.
  18. That's clearly a gross generalization. I was in Rome last year and we ate at Restaurant 34 (a couple times, actually), very close to the Spanish Steps, and it was fantastic, was fairly priced, had locals as patrons, and I would return on my next trip.
  19. My in-laws live in the area, and I've been to the pantry no less that a couple dozen times, and have yet to have a meal that didn't satisfy, and at a great price, as Joe mentions. Some standouts: The cinnamon bun, which is GIANT and delicious The homemade oatmeal Tuna melt Old bay fries Turkey and Brie sandwich Actually, it’s all good
  20. I took my wife here a week or so ago for her birthday, not knowing that the chef left and the menu had changed. We sit down, she takes 1 look at the menu, and gives me a look that says I don't have much time left on this earth. Overall, the food was uneven. While the stuffed little tomatoes were good, the goat cheese wellington was a bit bland and soggy. The fish and chips were just OK, and the seared rockfish with the yellow tomato vinaigrette was absolutely disgusting. Those flavors did not go together at all. It tasted like feet. I will say that the truffle fries were amazing. My wife was so pissed about her meal that we didn't stay for dessert...she just wanted out. I had called ahead to say that it was my wife's b-day, and asked if they could put a candle in whatever she orders for dessert, which they said was no problem. We sit down at the table and the server immediately begins to congratulate me on my birthday. Thanks, pal. Anyway, since we didn't even have dessert, he was kind enough to bring 2 drinks on the house for us, even tho we didn't ask. Of course, this just meant that we had to sit there longer, but it was a very nice gesture. Ah well, there's always her next b-day.
  21. The hummos at the Dupont location was severly off last Thurs night. I hope it was an abberation and not the result of a change in recipe.
  22. The rabbit stew is also my favorite, yet when I was there a few weeks ago, it seems that the recipe had changed. There was an abundance of mustard added to the dish that wasn't there in previous incarnations (I've had this dish a dozen times, maybe more.). It's also my wife's favorite dish, which she had as well, and she also noticed the change. I suppose it would have been fine if it wasn't such a strong mustard, but it really overpowered the entire dish, making a delightfully creamy stew into a mustardy mess. I couldn't have been more disappointed. I'm hoping it was just an off night or mistake, and not the results of a change in recipe.
  23. Well, it just goes to show you, because I was there over the weekend as well, and 2 dumplings gushed all over my pants, making me think that the dumplings had more soup in them than usual. That being said, the combination fried rice, which is usually delicious and arguably my favortite thing they make (yes, I realize it is rice, and that this doesn't appear to be a flattering statement, but it is!) was a little off. I'm hoping it was an abberation and not a sign of something larger.
  24. On my most recent visit to this hallowed city, I noticed a travesty had occurred. Peel Pub, a joint delightful in its dank (but the dank, Moe, the dank!) and with some of the best service this side of Vegas (see earlier comment), has moved to the other side of the street and is now some trendy, hipster bar that is far too crowded, far too noisy, and has far too many male employees. They’ve up and ruined the best bar in Montreal, and for what, money? Bah! Steer clear of this abomination.
  25. I've been to this place a few times, and everything I've had has been fantastic. That being said, it always seems so expensive. We took my in-laws there for dinner and our tab was over 100...for a pizza joint. I realize the quality is great and we get apps and wine, and yet I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that it's a pizza place, and that I can't leave without spending $50 per couple.
