  1. Went for an office luncheon yesterday and had the onion soup and the veal. Both were delicious and well apportioned. The veal was in the style of a slow-cooked meat that was falling apart at the touch of the fork, which was a new and enjoyable experience for me. Also it was in a mustard-based sauce that complemented it nicely and didn’t overpower it. Since I can see this restaurant from my office window, we’ve had a few luncheons there every year since it’s been open and it never seems to disappoint.
  2. When can we add "Ray's the _______" to the Trite Food list
  3. Recently returned from a trip to Florence, where we had some wonderful food (natch). Some of the highlights included: Il Pizzauolo, where we had an appetizer of burrata and a plate of fried accompaniments. You could not believe the size of this ball of burrata, probably a good 7 inches around, and just delicious. The pizza was good too, if a bit greasy, but the app is what stood out. Mario’s serves an amazing bisteca, as advertized, and left me wishing we had gone there more than once. Da Camillo served a ribollita that was among one of the best dishes my wife and I have ever had, anywhere, of any kind. Cibreo Trattoria was easily the best meal, beginning to end, with not a single miss. I’ve been to the fancier restaurant twice before, and since they both appear to share a single kitchen, there was no let down at this cheaper alternative. Am I right that they lack an oven, given that the food is served either cold or at room temp? This is an amazing feat given the quality/type of food that comes out of that kitchen. Anyway, nothing earth shattering here, but figured I’d share.
  4. I ate here recently and really enjoyed the Mini Pork Pita, which was just that, namely a miniature gyro with pork (obviously). It includes 3 good sized mini pita sandwiches of nicely seasoned pork (as opposed to the lamb sliders, which I think are overcome by the spiceyness) and well accoutered. I'd get them every time!
  5. Had a fine meal the other day, and were pleased to walk in at around 12:30 on a Saturday and not have to wait....perhaps the review-led fervor has calmed down. Anyway, we ordered a couple dishes, and asked for them to be spicy. The dishes were prepared as usual, so to add the spiciness we requested, they simply slathered some kind of hot sauce on top. This was disappointing. Given our previous experiences there, I had expected some application of craft and nuance to make the dish bolder than usual...instead of what they did, which was to squirt a bunch of Rooster sauce (or whatever) on it. I should add that this also served to make the dish uneven, as each bite had differing amounts of hot sauce on it.
  6. Scott (Scooter) was kind enough to share this delicious recipe with me last year: In a cocktail shaker with ice add 1/2 oz Gin (sapphire works), 1/4 oz of fresh lemon juice and 1/4 oz St. Germain Elderflower. Shake and strain into a champagne flute and top with the sparkling wine of your choosing. Anything Brut will do. Finish with a twist of lemon and that's it.
  7. We had a fantastic meal here on Friday night. The highlights for us were the appetizers, particularly the scotch eggs, which were unique, interestingly crafted, very tasty, and presented in a neat, multi-tiered contraption. We also had the tart U-Bet describes above, and it too was yummy. For mains, they didn't have the fried chicken that people rave about above, so I had the fish and chips, which was cooked perfectly and quite tasty. It also came with one tempura green bean, and I wish you could get a plate of those instead of fries, it was so good. My wife had the london broil and while it too was good, it was cool to lukewarm when served.
  8. I've been to this place a few times and have been left totally underwhelmed, and last night, ripped off. To wit, I ordered a 12 inch meatball sub, and it came with 4 meatballs on it. 4! On a 12 inch sub! Sure, they cut the meatballs in half to spread them out, but these are not big meatballs, just average size. Even my wife remarked, "This is all bread." And the bread was nearly stale. Oh, and it cost me 10 bucks. Total scam. The other sandwiches I've had there, while not ripoffs, simply haven't been that good. That being said, those risotto balls and the Boylan (sp?) soda are delicious...I'm just not sure it's enough.
  9. I second this assessment, having just had this dish for the first time over the weekend. It's another great option in a restaurant full of great options. Also, thanks to the review, it's worth noting that this place is no longer a secret, where you can stroll in at anytime and be seated right away. It was packed at lunchtime yesterday, with wait times up to 40 minutes. Moreover, the kitchen and staff are not yet prepared to deal with their new found fame, which resulted in some lapses in service (forgetting drinks, not knowing which tables got which food) and long wait times for the food (which they did apologize for). I imagine they'll work it out, and if they don't, it wouldn't stop me from going there anyway.
  10. I recently ate at the Legal Seafood at the airport and had a fine meal. The clam chowder was as good as its reputation, and the fried scallops were nicely seasoned and cooked appropriately. I will say that what bothered me was that I was still eating my chowder when the scallops were brought over to me, resulting in them sitting there for 5 mins until I was ready to switch plates. Also, it would have been nice to have at least two minutes between courses, as I wasn't in a rush to catch a plane and made no indication that I was.
  11. I think I've been to this restaurant 7 times now in the past couple months, so much so that a couple waiters are starting to recognize me. It's kinda embarrassing...I may have to lay off for a while, if I can. I think I'm addicted. At any rate, we tried the fried rice with the crab and shrimp for the first time and it was as good as advertised and easily the best friend rice I've ever had, with what i believe were pieces of jumbo lump crab and shrimps with their tails tucked between their legs (trust me, that makes sense). Alas, it's now another dish that I will have to order every time I go in there. The owner also spent a good deal of time walking around the dining room talking to the customers, which was nice. and he wasn't just going through the motions, as he spent a good 10 mins talking with one couple, and was genuinely interested in their comments about the food, and what the restaurant might do differently (something about providing other fish options for the whole fried fish they make).
  12. We decided to give this place another try last Saturday night. I strolled in expecting a line and was delighted to find that there wasn't one. I ordered to Colletti's (sp?) Smokehouse burgers, the fried onion things they sell (like a detached awesome blossom), the classic wedge salad, and two toasted marshmallow shakes. About two minutes after I put my order in a bunch of people showed up, so I just beat the rush. A bit later I began to notice that the people who came in after me were getting their food before me, so the girl doling out the food finally went to check on my order, and it was completed some 20 minutes after I ordered. So, that was annoying and unnecessary. I don't live very far from the restaurant (< 10 min) but the onion thingys didn't really survive the trip, becoming fairly soggy, so that was a bummer. I was hoping my previous experience with the burgers was simply due to ordering a burger I didn't really want (damn inauguration menu!), but the burgers remained average at best. Again, you can get a burger just as good for the half the price at 5 Guys (and they at least have good fries!). What we did enjoy was the salad, which was large and fresh, and the shakes, which continue to be amazing. I don't see us going back...I'm not sure what the point would be.
  13. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Classic-Spani...ria/Detail.aspx This is my family's go-to sangria, never had a complaint, with most people clamoring for more. We usually add other fruits not listed as well. Trsut me, you can't go wrong here, and with 1.5 cups of rum to boot, you'll tie on a nice one
  14. I have family coming into town. Prior to their departure on a Sunday (so we'll need to be reasonably close to DCA), we'll need to have an early breakfast (around 8-8:30) for 10 people (including 2 small children), each of which seems to preclude many restaurants from being a viable choice. Your suggestions are appreciated.
  15. I've now been to this restaurant 4 times in the last month or so and agree with the previous posts. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is #12 Country Banquet Vermicelli which is a staple when I go. It's a large bowl of noodles with tender pieces of pork, bean sprouts, etc. You to take the side of fish sauce, pour it over the noodles, mix it all up and enjoy! It could be a meal on its own or serve as a fine companion to your cow or shrimp.
  16. Is it too early to add this to the Auld Lang Cuisine thread..or is there an Auld Lang Ambiance thread?
  17. Actually, as someone who has visited Spain within the past 6 months, this is exactly how I received the two steaks I ordered in highly respected restaurants (Casa Lucio, and another with a name I can't remember at the moment), so your experience sounds authentic to me. Both were served almost fajita-style, which is to say seared and on an incredibly hot plate, on which you could turn over the steak to cook it more to your liking. No frills, no fuss, and not prime cuts, either...but well seasoned and delicious nonetheless.
  18. Continuing my theme of restaurants that I enjoy but that most would probably abhor, Anthony's Restaurant is an old standby when in F-Church and needing a good bite, cheap. Sure, you need to keep a blind eye to the décor, make it two blind eyes, but for my money, they churn out a number of quality items. Highlights include the Gyro, Chicken Suvlaki, and Steak & Cheese -- all piled high, well seasoned and appointed. A basket of crinkle cut fries (yes!) or rings will complement those items nicely. I've also had their pizza, which is good, tho it can come out with too much cheese at times. I think their tzatziki is pretty good too. **Waves good bye to whatever credibility existed** My next post will be on the delicious club sandwich that can be had at the Cheesecake Factory"¦
  19. I'm with ChiefDC...I've always enjoyed Cafe Asia, for what it is. I usually get a curry dish, that always comes with a filling amount of chicken, potatoes, green beans, carrots, and whatever else I might not be thinking of, and at a reasonable price. Oh, and I think their rangoon are money...particularly that delicious, creamy, thick, yellow sauce.
  20. Wow...I want to print out the cover of that book and eat it! Congrats
  21. Got home from class to see the wife studying the Good Stuff menu online like the Zapruder film. We put together what should have been a delightful meal, but instead arrived there only to find out that it was the last day of their special inauguration menu...which is to say that they weren't serving a damn thing we wanted. Fuck! So we got two "Obama burgers" which, as I said, weren't what we wanted and sucked anyways. I didn't get any sense of quality ingredients, the bacon was flaccid, and the sauce was slathered on there and overwhelming. I think I'd rather spend half the money and go to Five guys. I will say, however, that I really liked the chili and the toasted marshmallow shake. The chili was a healthy serving for a reasonable price ($6) and came with a slew of toppings and a corn bread muffin. It wasn't spicy, so if that's what you think is needed for good chili, look elsewhere. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm from MA, so I don't really know from chili...now, if they served Steamers, I could give a more accurate assessment. I think I would go back and make a meal of the chili and shake...the burgers not so much. Perhaps I need to try their normal fare...
