  1. I always thought that Bagels & Baguettes, located near Union Station, made one helluva egg sandwich. And the bagels they use aren't bad either, given that bagels in this area inherently suck.
  2. My wife and I have been long-time dim sum eaters at Fortune across the street, so over the weekend we decided to give MDH a try. Overall we thought that both the food and service we better at Mark's than at Fortune. One thing that specifically stood out was the quality of their shrimp-related foods. I always felt at Fortune that when you ordered shrimp cakes, dumplings, shimai, whatever, that you were getting some kind of shrimp composite, which always skeeved me out. At Mark's you could see the actual shrimp in the shumai and the dumplings, there was no mistaking it for something else, and it was delicious to boot. The vegetable noodles, while not a fancy dish, were particularly good as well. I look forward to heading back there.
  3. I dunno...that cake batter ice cream is like crack to me...i can't get enough.
  4. I've always been a big fan of the chicken fingers at the Chilis in the Charlotte airport. They aren't prepared in the usual TGIFridays-breading-style mode, but more like the sweet and sour chicken that you'd get at a chinese food restaurant. Add some honeymustard and some well-seasoned fries and you have a delicious meal. CLT
  5. yeah, but they never seem to work the caulk...er, gun, properly. i think i'll leave it at that.
  6. The Crunchwrap Supreme is my all time favorite. One gripe I do have is that when you order burrito supremes, they never seem to spread out the sour cream, but always just put a blob of it at one end or the other. Is it so hard to spread it out the length of the burrito?
  7. Forget all that. Go to Peel Pub, where you can get a hotdog platter for 2.95, and where they know how to serve their beer -- in giant pitchers attached to beautiful women. Then take all the money you saved and spend it on lap dances. This seemed to work for the many bachelor parties I've gone to in Montreal.
  8. I had mine at Bucca Di Beppo....good, drunken times were had by all.
  9. his is probably true, but I live in SW, where there is nothing, and the 2 new Starbucks that recently opened are a welcome addition to the area.
  10. Hmmm, then I'd suggest you find new friends! But seriously, I think that Rasika would satisfy both the small plate = big fun, and the young energetic atmosphere.
  11. I've always been a fan of the bakery/pastry shop at the end of the market because they sell chalah and whitefish...jewish staples that are usually hard to find (IMHO).
  12. They've got a pretty good crab bisque there..and a favorite of Tim Russert as well. I saw him getting an order when I was last there a few months ago. Just a small aside...you know how sometimes people on TV do not look like themselves in real life, well Tim Russert looks like Tim Russert. No mistaken identity there.
  13. I saw the blurb and actually cut it out of the paper, I was so excited. Glad to hear it lives up to its billing, and stays hot after so long...sounds like it could survive a trip back into DC.
  14. Perhaps this is not the propper place for this comment as it's not the restaurant I miss, but I'd give anything for Wendy's to bring back the Superbar.
  15. After reading in other threads how good this place is, the Mrs. and I decided to give it a go. It was so good that we were back 2 days later with my in-laws. Four items that are can't miss: 1) House Special Chicken, which is half a chicken, sliced up by a cleaver, and cooked in some kind of delicious soy and garlic sauce; 2) the pork buns, which were some of the best dumplings I've ever had, especially when combined with the restaurant's homemade signature sauce of ginger and scallion; 3) the homemade noodles, fried with chicken, which is what you see the guy making in the window of the restaurant; and 4) The rolls, in either egg or spring form, which were great. I don't know what makes an egg/spring roll great or better than others, yet for whatever reason, these were. We also had a few other items, but liked their counterparts (mentioned above) better: The vegetable and leek dumplings, which were good and fresh, but we both liked the pork buns better. The homemade noodles in soup with chicken, which alone was enough to feed two people, but on the bland side (get them fried instead). The beef with ginger and scallions, which was a good dish, but didn't do anything to distinguish itself form the other thousands of "beef with (blank)" dishes I've eaten in my lifetime. After only 2 visits, I'm ready to declare it the best Chinese food in the city.
  16. I've heard good things about the French restaurant Montmarte on Penn Ave SE
  17. I've always enjoyed their chicken caesar salad. They have a good dressing, and throw a decent amount of chicken on top.
  18. Wow, my name is actually attached to a topic starter, and the subject is French Onion Soup?!?! Gee thanks, Rocks. It reminds me of an old SNL skit with Eddie Murphy when he says to a guy, "you wrote a movie about pimps and there aint no bruthas in it?I don't know whether to thank you or to punch you in your mouth." Now I'm forced to go try the buffet at Good Guys and write a review on that.
  19. I've had the french onion soup at Bistro Bis a dozen times and always thought it was fantastic.
  20. My wife and I went to 2 Amy's for the 1st time the other night. she had the Margharita with pepperoni, and I added sausage to mine. Both pizzas were fantastic and easily the best pizza we've ever had in DC, which unfortunately doesn't say as much as i'd like it to considering that DC pizza sucks. We also had the salt cod croquettes which we thought were just ok, partly because i burned my mouth on them, partly because i like to dip things in sauce, and partly because they were just kinda plain and ok. We did spy another table eating some sort of roasted olives appetizer that looked delicious, and we immediately regretted not getting that...anyone ever try that?
  21. My boss, a former Secretary of HEW under Ford, has been going to the Market Inn since the 70’s, and has, in fact, enjoyed the service of the same waitress all this time. In addition to the service, he is particularly fond of the atmosphere and the she-crab soup, and given all the stories I’ve heard over the years, I was looking forward to his next trip to Washington and the free meal that would come with it. The truth is, the place is old and a bit run-down…it likely hasn’t been remodeled since he first started eating there 35-odd years ago! But, believe it or not, there is a certain charm there, with a bar that is nice and dank (but the dank, Moe, the dank!), an ancient “piano” and ancient piano player performing live music every night, and a most impressive collection of nudes that adorns the walls (often the subject of the many stories), including a mesmerizing portrait of Marilyn Monroe. I thought the she-crab soup was as good as advertised. It was rich and creamy, following an old southern recipe I’m told, and with a few splashes of sherry, most enjoyable. Other than that, the food was serviceable to just plain bad, which was a shame. No real need to go into a detailed description here, because it’s certainly not your typical DR place. However, in the interest of getting a thread going on all DC restaurants, I figured I’d share. But hey, it is what it is, and if you’re looking for a different kind of atmosphere and love the dank, then it’s worth stopping by the bar for a bourbon and a cup o’ soup.
  22. Went to Dino last weekend for a friends birthday dinner, and we had a fantastic time. Of course, it didn't hurt that we're good friends with a waitress there. We ordered a whole range of items and nary a disparaging word was said. A few standouts were the plate of prosciutto, which was delicate and delicious; the lasagne, which was deconstructed in a way and very flavorful with the pork, veal and bacon; and the tomato and bread soup, which was nice and hearty. I look forward to going back.
  23. Dan is a friend of mine and one hell of a fantasy football player. So he's got that going for him, which is nice. They should have asked him to find a back-up running back that would see significant carries due to injury...he would have found that guy no problem...picture or no.
