  1. I am a recovering very picky eater but I have failed to learn to enjoy: cilantro, olives, mushrooms and any member of the brassica family. I have tried very hard to like many them, but it just isn't happening. (I did not try to like cilantro because it is evil.)
  2. I have not been in many years- but Platos Diner in College Park, used to fit the bill.
  3. Thanks for the h/t ktmoomau- I ordered my turket from them today too! $2.25 a pound plus a $4 drawing fee. I will be picking up at the farm.. its a little crazy but part of the fun.
  4. My building slides fliers under our door that say "treat or treat" on one side and "Sorry no candy here" on the other. You hang it on your door, so children know where to knock. There are quite a few children in the building, so I think it works out well. I probably had 20 trick or treaters this year (first one I've been home since I moved in so I over bought) but they all got a lot of candy! It was worth it to hear- "there is a happy pumpkin here, come on!"
  5. I think many of us- even if we are not kosher- would never put ANY kind of cheese/dairy on a corned beef/pastrami sandwich. That isn't even an option at Jewish delis. Without considering why... it just feels so wrong. turkey sure, but that is not in the culinary history of our people. wait now I'm thinking about a reuben. forget my argment other than- it just sounds wrong!
  6. Thanks for that great info Pat! I'll share with the family. Shame you weren't able to taste the food.. you'll have to make a trip to the metropolis of Olney
  7. I am from Olney and recently returned from a trip to Peru- so my parents invited me to join them at Sardi's Fusion, a Peruvian "fusion" restaurant in Olney. The space is the recent home to Taste Gastropub. We ordered solely from the Peruvian section of the menu, but I was impressed. First- they make their own chica morada, (a Peruvian drink made from red corn and warm spices.) It wasn't the best I've ever had, but absolutely acceptable and the effort is commendable. We ordered the Lomo Saltado (skirt steak sauteed with fries, onions, tomatoes, with rice), Arroz con Mariscos (rice with shellfish), and Aji de gallina (chicken with aji sauce). To be fair, I did not eat in mainly higher end places in Peru- but all dishes at Sardi's were really great and better in quality to many I tasted there. The aji de gallina was not a stewing hen as they have there, but a nice yellow aji sauce over chicken, rice and potatoes (Peruvian food never spares the carbs.) The lomo saltado was cooked REALLY well to a medium rare with a nice sauce and all the traditional additions. My favorite was the arroz con mariscos- fresh tasting seafood (mussels, shrimp, bay scallops, calamari) with a nicely cooked rice with red pepper, some tomato and a spices. I would happily order any of the 3 again. We did not explore the fusion section of the menu or veer from the entres, but there looks to be some good things there as well as some ways to appeal to all palates. Note- we went at 6:15 wtihout a reservation and got a table. By 6:30 it was packed. 7- a few parties were waiting. Here's the menu, a large .pdf file: 3d85a9_8c7e82b7decf4a3da976ce3fd0ce8a2c.pdf
  8. I have the Pyrex Snapwear and I love it. I haven't had it long enough to judge long term strength but it stays tight, doesn't leak and comes in usable sizes.
  9. Thank you all! I appreciate all the responses. I think a trip to VA is definitely in order.
  10. Thank you both so much for your suggestions. I have family in Springfield, so I'll check when I'm out there, along with the others.' I was taken to the place with "the best saltenas in la paz" that I am kicking myself for not writing down the name. (If anyone is going to La Paz, I'll find out for you.) They had beef, chicken and veggie options. I had beef. The dough had a pinch of sugar but wasn't overtly sweet. There was a lot of sauce/gravy inside so it is served with a spoon, but I was told real Bolivians never use it. Also, real Bolivians finish their saltenas without spilling anything. out. (I passed) I was very focused on not spilling but there was definitely not an olive pit inside. There was a slice of hard boiled egg. It was a very balanced snack- a little sweet, very savory- the beef was diced and not tough at all. Bolivians eat these as a midmorning snack, workers from surrounding buildings were lined up down the block at 10 am. When I tried to get more for the plane, I was told they were gone by 2. Thank you all for help with my post-vacation quest.
  11. Hi Rockwellians, I just got back from a trip to Peru and Bolivia and I am now in search of the delicious Bolivian treat- saltenas. Are there any places in the DC area that have them? More specifically in MD? They are like empanadas but with more sauce and even more delicious. Thanks all!
  12. I went to GrillMarx last night with my parents for an early Father's Day Celebration. My parents still live in Olney so it was an easy choice location wise, but still not a place my parents visit regularly since they don't dine out much. I still can't believe a place with $30 steaks exists in Olney but we had a wonderful dinner. Also, the service was fantastic. Our waiter was helpful and kind and chased me out into the rain to give me the sweater I left on my chair. Back to the food- My parents ordered the cream of crab soup and I stole a taste. It is different than the sherry heavy versions that are most common, lots of lump crab meat and a good amount of black pepper. It was delicious. I believe it is only served on Saturday nights. My parents each got filets and I ordered a NY Strip. They were happy with the cook on their steaks and the sides we were served- we ordered the cheddar scallion grits, grilled asparagus and mac and cheese.) When my strip came out on the well side of medium well rather than the requested medium, they replaced it quickly and with apologies. The new steak was perfect. In the mean time I was happy eating my cheddar scallion grits (order this instead of the mac and cheese!) and enjoying our evening. We did not try any of the composed plates or the raw bar and I don't remember the wine we ordered- I just ordered a glad of what my dad ordered- but it was a lovely night in Olney- where I still can't believe this restaurant exists.

    Orphan Black

I watch. Sure its ridiculous but I agree, the acting keeps me hanging on.
  14. I work in Elkridge, MD so I am going to try to help a bit. I went to a party last year at Leelyns in Ellicott City last year and the food was good. The place is very popular with the HoCo crowd. I can't vouch for the place but my coworkers speak highly of the crab cakes at Timbuktu in Hanover.
  15. The best Fathers Day gift I have ever given my dad was a case of sauce from Bennett's. We went down there for vacation for about 10 years and the sauce is his gold standard. When I stopped in in 2010 while driving cross country, it was a bit disappointing, but given your review I'll assume it was an off night. (it was empty)
  16. My sister in LA is dying to know where they are planning to locate. If anyone from Cava hangs here- please report!)
  17. La Palapa is right there. I've never been, but my co-workers like it for happy hour.
  18. I have a non-foodie rec. If you truly just want a quiet place to congregate and talk, Uncle Nick's is a greek place across time square in hells kitchen (50th and 9th).The food is greek american- gyros, lamb chops, kabobs, dips etc. My sister and I always go there when we arrive at night. It is a great place to catch up and have a satisfying, filling meal after traveling. There is nothing trendy about it, but the people are nice and the food is what you want it to be and the place has been quiet when I've been there. About a 10 minute brisk walk from Bryant Park.
  19. I admit that as a Syracuse grad I have a soft spot for Wegmans, but I shop at the Columbia Wegmans regularly and have not seen a drop off in quality at all. My fruits and veg last a long time and the prices are great on "normal grocery store items" like cereal and milk. They got rid of the dim sum dumplings, so I don't frequent the hot food bar as much, but that is probably for the best. Prices are high for meat and seafood, but the quality is definitely better than my giant/safeway here in silver spring, so I buy it less frequently. I work in Howard County so it isn't out of the way, but I think it is still going strong.
  20. I stop there on trips to NYC. Those are really good cookies (I prefer the chocolate chip walnut). I've never waited more than a minute or 2 to get in though. I recommend it! What isn't to like about a warm, gooey, giant cookie.
  21. Not knowing where you live,I love getting salads at Cava Grill. Good sauces, meats or falafel and vegetables. Definitely not sit down, but enjoyable. (and you can get the same thing on pitas or rice)
