  1. I was in Vietnam last summer and more than a few people mentioned that visit. They were so excited that Bourdain and Obama honored true Vietnamese food and culture.
  2. After an impromptu drive up to Frederick on Saturday, we stopped at Family Meal on the way home. It had a 30 min wait at 6:30 for a table, but we grabbed the last 2 seats at the bar. We pondered something more healthful, but the fried chicken called our name. For $15 you get 4 pieces with 2 biscuits, pickles and hot sauce. I was not charged more (as I expected to be) when I requested all white meat. My boyfriend also ordered the duck fat fries, which I tasted and were really good with some nice dipping sauces (ranch, old bay, and siracha mayo.) The coating of the chicken was nice and crispy. Sitting at the bar we were able to watch Bryan Voltaggio on the line for the first half hour or so. He either left or was in an office after that. I imagine he may have gone over to Volt. We also got to watch the bartender shake some great looking cocktails. I wished I was not driving, I would have definitely had one. The desserts looked great too, but that seemed like too much after chicken. I had enough for lunch the next day and a snack after that. I would definitely go there again to try more of the menu if headed up that way.
  3. When my sister and I were roommates, we frequently went to Hollywood East Cafe for dim sum. Enough that the servers would see us and start bringing our regular choices. I was there for Mother's Day and chinese broccoli with oyster sauce appeared and the server said "you always get this, right?" I haven't been there more than a year times a year in years.
  4. My sister was home and it is her favorite- so we had lunch at Hollywood East on Sunday... Mother's Day. We never go on Sundays because it is busier let alone a holiday, but they did an amazing job with all the celebrants there. We arrived about noon and were seated at 12:35. We may have gotten our favorites, FASTER than usual. Even better than our usual visits, everything was hot because it was getting pulled off the carts so fast. We had: har gow, shu mai, sticky rice in lotus leaf, steamed pork buns, chicken with ginger dumplings, fried shrimp with eggplant, fried taro dumplings, and chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. I noticed some of the more labor intensive dishes were not circulating as much, like the rice noodle crepes, but that makes sense given what needed to come out of the kitchen. I mentioned to one of the son's how well it seemed to be going and he said they were down 2 staff from their normal Sunday team. The key may to be to go when it is crazy busy- or totally quiet and you order from the menu.
  5. I think the bar is- if you care enough to gripe on the wash post forum, it clearly bothered you. if it bothered you that much- talk to the manager. I agree, it puts a damper on the evening; but if you don't give a restaurant or other business a chance to make it right, complaining in a loud place seems a bit much.
  6. New food pod I like- Burnt Toast. (from Food52) not a high commitment pod- short episodes, non serial. pretty fun- like where did the banana peel slipping gag come from? an interview with Jonathan Gold. bad white house food.
  7. also Reveal! from the Center for Investigative Reporting
  8. I love podcasts. This list will make it look like I don't do anything else, but I just have them on in the background a LOT of the time. My favorites are: NPR extensions/re-broadcasts: Code Switch, Planet Money, Freakonomics Radio, This American Life, Radio Lab, Rough Translation, More Perfect, Food related: The Sporkful, Special Sauce, Serial narrative (non-fiction): Serial (obviously), Crimetown, S Town, Empire on Blood, Making Oprah Political (all from Crooked Media) : Pod Save America, Lovett or Leave it, With Friends like These, Other: Death Sex and Money, Criminal, Backstory, Scene on Radio (their series Seeing White is phenomenal), Suprisingly Awesome, Other: Mixed Race in America, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,
  9. Sounds great. Post a picture the finished product! --- Pães de Queijo - (porcupine)
  10. Did you find a good cake base recipe? I have made Roland Meisner's from his Basic to Beautiful Cakes. Someone posted it online here (and it has lemon zest in it!)- http://simply-june.blogspot.com/2010/05/yellow-cake-with-jam-filling.html
  11. If it wasn't a dive, it wouldn't be Quarry House. If they made it nice and trendy I think it would close within a year. I can't wait to go back, hopefully tomorrow.
  12. On a rainy night in Bethesda 2 weeks ago, we popped in for dinner. I was a little worried that it was so empty but the food was really tasty. We got aloo gobi, palak paneer and garlic naan. Nothing crazy, but warm and exactly what we wanted. I would definitely pop in again when in the area. They looked like they had a steady take out business going and the restaurant got a lot more full as the night went on.
  13. I am looking forward to your report. I am planning a trip to Oaxaca this summer. I am thinking of tagging on Mexico City too, if we have enough time. Please let me know how you feel safety wise there as well.
  14. The family of one of my students has it shipped in from a farm in Michigan.
  15. Thanks for the suggestion! This is great!!
  16. I haven't lived in Bethesda since 2010 but when I did- Mia's was a nice place to meet with friends. The pizzas were pretty good (if not life changing) but it was a calm, pretty place to catch up that didn't feel like a chain or a scene.
  17. Thanks!! I was lucky enough to travel through Singapore this summer and I have wanted to make that dish since.
  18. Can you share your recipe? I would love to make this!
  19. I volunteered in the recreation classes a 2-3 times a month for years when I lived in Bethesda. I learned to be a very competent cook and baker from the wonderful chef instructors there. Many staple recipes for my family come from those classes, and my knife skills and cooking skills are definitely due to them. I don't live in the neighborhood anymore, but I am sure they will be greatly missed.
  20. As a far too frequent Wegmans shopper... if someone is behind the sushi counter- they will custom make whatever you want. I sometimes ask for things made just because it is fresher and the rice not ice cold (if it isn't in the cooler below)
  21. They are very nice about it. I always pay something but not $25. I felt guilty until I read an article about the Met that said that admission sales were a very small portion of their income.
  22. Thanks all for the encouragement to buy ice cream for $7.99 a pint. I am on my second pint of brown butter almond brittle. It is so creamy and delicious and I love that the ice cream base is much less sweet than typical. I am justifying that it is still less money than going out for ice cream for a few people? A worthwhile treat.
