  1. I like the Big Greek Cafe version (Rockville and Silver Spring)
  2. I adore Peg Leg VIntage in College Park. Lots of MCM. You can friend them on facebook to get an idea of the inventory. If funds were unlimited, my house would be entirely furnished from here. http://peglegvintage.com/
  3. I met a lot of Dutch people this summer. They told me that poke has been a trend in the Netherlands for a few years now. (they thought it was japanese.)
  4. I do not think Peru would be too difficult to travel in alone, but I went with my sister and for ease and comfort we traveled with gadventures. They do a great job of getting you place to place and arranging hotels. They are a small group company- so I think the average number of travelers is 12 (we had 7.) You cover a lot of ground but it isn't stressful sine you don't have to think about getting place to place. They have various levels of comforts/inclusions from very basic (backpacker level wtih nothing included) to much nicer hotels with more scheduled tours and stops. we went the middle road. https://www.gadventures.com/trips/inca-empire/PIML/ If you are interested in the Amazon, I can not highly enough recommend Amazonia Adventures http://perujungle.com/ It isn't the cheapest place but I felt like I got a huge amount of value from the private guide (every group gets one), great food and really nice rooms. My trip regret was not spending more time in La Paz. It isn't for everyone, it is definitely gritty, but I LOVED it. and the visa isn't cheap, so you might as well stay a while. Day tours used were: Haku tours in Lima for an orientation/history tour and Banjo Tours in La Paz. This is all from 2015. PM me with any questions. I LOVED Peru/Bolivia. I went to Ecuador in 2016 so I can answer specific questions here or through PM.
  5. @funkyfood, it does use a lot of coffee!! but still cheaper to use good beans in that, than picking up coffee on the way in to work. but yeah, a lot of coffee... For those who are considering it, I use 14 T for 4-5 days of coffee I think. It makes a concentrate and then you add ice/water/milk as you see fit. It is a lot, but I drink one cup a day. If you drink many cups a day, then this may fail the cost/benefit.
  6. yikes, I don't know if I am ready for that one!
  7. That would explain the amazing concentration I have when I drink it. seriously.
  8. I make my own cold brew with this coffee maker. It does take a little planning but one pitcher lasts me the week. It is a lot smoother than regular brew iced coffee and easy for me since I only drink coffee cold anyway. I have never loved the bottled stuff. I make mine with Zeke's Balinese beans usually.
  9. I've never been to a Greek Festival, and have no idea why. When they start up in the fall, can people post the dates somewhere?
  10. I absolutely adore this show. It is so calming and relaxing (and educational.) They are so supportive and lovely to each other. And there is something about the fact they are competing for a cake plate, rather than a huge cash prize, that makes it so sweet and earnest.
  11. 1 vote for Harris.
  12. Hi everyone, Have you watched Binging with Babish? A guy named Andrew Rea recreates famous dishes from tv and movies like the jailhouse sauce from Goodfellas and the "moistmaker" sandwich from Friends. https://www.youtube.com/user/bgfilms Pretty entertaining.
  13. Any recent reviews? I have a guest coming who requested drunken noodles with tofu, and I remember them being really good here (pressed tofu ribbons, not fried). If not here, where in Rockville should we go?
  14. It isn't barbecue, but one of my favorite bites on a cross country drive several years ago was http://laspaletasnashville.com/ Who knew a sweet corn popsicle could be so delicious?
  15. How strange. I will call before I go on Sunday for our traditional dim sum on Thanksgiving weekend. I appreciate the heads up.
  16. They just updated their Fb page so they are still open: Hollywood East Cafe 10 hrs ยท We'll be opening early at 10am on Thanksgiving Day, and closing early at 4pm. Serving Dim Sum on Carts until 3pm. Hope everybody has a safe and wonderful holiday with their Family & Friends!
  17. I am a huge fan of this podcast. I also like "Special Sauce" from the Serious Eats folks, for the restaurant side of food.
  18. I went to the Din Tai Fung in Glendale. It is indeed basically part of the Americana mall. the entrance is on the street level though. It should be noted this is an outdoor mall around a large square, so while still a mall (hi Apple and Anthropology) it isn't like being in Montgomery mall. The wait was about 45 min for 3 of us at 1 pm on a sunday. The food was more than worth it. We had the XLB (2 orders), spicy shrimp dumplings and pan fried pot stickers (along with cucumbers and spinach.) Total was a little over $20 a person. I have paid so much more for so much less.
  19. Thank you for the update! I used to go there not infrequently but I haven't been in a few years. I am glad to hear it has held up and I will have to make it back soon.
  20. I am going to Victoria Gastro Pub tomorrow, if I get any food I'll report back. One place a lot of people like is Leelynn's in Ellicott City. I have gotten small things at happy hour and have been happy with them, but I haven't eaten dinner there. I have had good meals at Royal Taj. Better than average Indian food (obviously) in a very ornate restaurant. Great service when I have been there. Another I can not personally recommend because I haven't been is Ananda. It is pretty popular around here. I need to get out more.
  21. What kinds of things are you interested in? I may have non-food related suggestions. I spent 3 weeks in the region 2 summers ago.
  22. The line at Oriental East remains unchanged. I went to Oriental East for the first time Sunday. The person I was going with said we needed to be there by 10:30 for the first seating and he was not exaggerating. As I pulled up, there were already 40+ people in line at 10:30. If you are not in the first seating, you will wait at least an hour for everyone to leave. But there were plenty of people willing to wait. ok on to the food, the more important part. I was there with a native Hong Konger and the food was really good. We only had 5 things as there were only 2 of us (Har Gow, Shumai, shrimp noodle crepes, beef balls and sticky rice in lotus leaf,) and they were all very tasty and hot/warm when we got them. The shrimp were large pieces in all the orders, not a paste. The chrysanthemum tea came hot and fully brewed (though with the flowers in it, so it got pleasantly stronger as we drank it.) I would absolutely go back here. HOWEVER, I don't generally want to wait outside for 30 min-an hour for lunch so I think Hollywood East is close in quality and I will likely return there more often. I would not argue if someone picked Oriental East and would happily eat there again, I just may choose to try to get there at 1 pm and see what happens. They serve dim sum from carts on weekends from 11-3.
