  1. I often see Digestives in Giant stores now, as most of their markets have a 3 foot wide "British Section".
  2. Oh good, I've been wanting to take my cats with me to the sushi bar. Fatty tuna all around!
  3. That parking lot is the worst in Falls Church city, I wish they used the old "Chicken Out" building in the front of Falls Plaza that's just sitting there.
  4. I was watching Saturday food shows today and saw a commercial for M Vs. F. Yikes! Adam is twice as large since the last time I've seen him! He had better be careful and try to reverse that train.
  5. Rib eye....with...morels? Oh, yum. Just a quick one to their webperson, check the part about creamed corn in the steak section.
  6. Glad to get ideas from those who are...experienced, thank you Rocks and SayCheese!
  7. Going to see Pomplamoose with OK Go at KenCen tonight, and plan to have dinner after. My friend lives in MD, in the Olney area, but is kindly taking me home to Falls Church first after the show. All I can think of that's not fussy is Silver Diner or Bob & Ediths (I've never been to B&E, so that might be a default). Anything along that route home that is worth checking out that time of night (likely 10ish) that's not fulla kids?
  8. I love Calphalon non-stick too. I'm wondering if there's a limit on the temperature you can subject it too in the oven?
  9. After an overnight stay in Frederick, I wanted to treat my friend to brunch, but we were unsuccessful at finding a place that had a menu that really made us want to go there. So, we decided to head back to NoVA, with a stop in Rockville where there is a Silver Diner. Just before reaching the Silver Diner, we saw the local branch of Matchbox, and wanted to check it out. Good thing too, because when finding a place to turn around on the Pike, we noticed the line of people out the door at Silver Diner (we imagined the proximity to the US Open may have been responsible for that, it wasn't until we were well into our food that we remembered it was Father's Day too). We were quickly seated, and enjoyed the performance of the 3 piece jazz band as we perused the menu. I started with a refreshing Mimosa, and my friend had a champagne based drink with grapefruit and pomegranate juices, the name of which escapes me. They had at least three variations on Bloody Mary's on the menu, and it was hard to resist ordering one of them. Service was pleasant and responsive. While the menu was not much for traditional "breakfasty" brunch items, I was very satisifed with the Marinated Chicken Muffaletta I ordered, which came with the best house made waffle chips I've ever had and a ramekin of ketchup for dipping (half of it came home with me). My companion had the Huevos Rancheros, which was a delicious combination of black beans, red onions (can't remember the rest , but did note it was not a typical cheese-loaded dish, which kept it light) and a fried egg on top of a very tasty puffy tortilla, with a scoop of freshly made guac on the side. I got to taste it, and it was a fantastic combination of flavors. Plus, their coffee is really good! I understand that they have only been serving brunch since the 4th of June, but it looks like a success to me. At less than 50 bucks before tip for both of us, I was very happy.
  10. I'm sure it's good, but I'm going to be a Philistine and say that I'm looking for something a bit downscale of that. Plus, the fact that there were only prices for side dishes made my purse hide under the bed. On edit: My friend and I were not knocked out by the Volt brunch menu on line. Or by any other places in Frederick that we could research on line. We decided to wait until we reached Rockville and go to the Silver Diner. As we expected, the line was out the door for SD, but we discovered the Matchbox branch next door, and had a very pleasant experience there.
  11. A friend and I are going up to the Frederick, MD vicinity to have dinner at the home of a couple in the mountains above Frederick this afternoon. We'll be staying at the Hampton Inn overnight to avoid a long drive home to VA immediately after, do any of you have any suggestion for a worthwhile brunch the next day? Or places to stay away from? Thanks!
  12. The last Roy Rogers outpost I saw was the one in Old Town Alexandria. It holds a particular memory for me even though I never ate at that particular one. Sometime in the very late 80's or early 90's, the ex worked for an association that gave an award of a technical nature. The winner was flown to DC, and wined and dined. My ex got the job of taking the winner and his wife out on the town, and I tagged along to help handle things. We benefitted from going out more than we could on our paltry salaries at the time. One day, the ex was driving them down to see Mt. Vernon without me along, and as they drove past the Old Town RR, the couple exclaimed "Is that the Roy Rogers restaurant?" (they were from Clovis, NM). Ex responded that, well, it was a Roy Rogers, and if they liked, they could go to lunch there after seeing Mt. Vernon. We're quite certain that lunch at Roy Rogers was the highlight of their trip, never mind all the linen napkin places of the time we took them to. Especially after their last night in DC when they were kind enough to share their bottle of champagne that the hotel had given them with us, and we heard about how he healed aircraft engines by laying his hands on them, and how man had dominion over all the earth (including women - no, I didn't hit him over the head with the champagne bottle)...Aaaarrrrghh!
  13. LOL, that's the second video of that market I've seen, the first one was before they pulled up their awnings and got out of the way. "Oh, I want some of the veggies you left sitting between the rails, they have that great axle grease flavor I like!"
  14. Darn, I noticed it was not in it's usual place, I'm sorry to hear it's no more.
  15. I want to try the Clover brewed Starbucks offerings too, I work near the Bethesda franchise that has one. Of course, now that the weather has turned to summer hell, I don't think I want to walk down there for a hot beverage and return to work a sweaty, hypo-hydrated mess. My complaint about Starbucks: When I ask for beans ground for a French Press, and the staff member gives me something that, when I get home, turns out to be too damn fine!! I've gotten to the point where I explain what a course grind is, and of course, get a lot of "yeah, yeah" in return. I sometimes get close enough to notice a French Press setting on the machines!!!!Grrrrr.
  16. Congratulations on being recognized! With a pic to boot!
  17. Experiment. I find certain kinds of cheeses (e.g., Stilton) marry well with those Breton wheat crackers.
  18. Sorry he's doing this, it was one of the better food shows and he passed on lots of knowledge.
  19. I see they have Koshari on the menu, that's attractive by itself.
  20. Thanks for the link to your blog. I think your dining companion who said it's not a restaurant but an experience was correct. I think the nay-sayers are going there expecting a typical DC dining experience, and it's wasted on them. It's kind of like Mel Brooks talking about his Catskill days when he'd come on stage and say "Man of a Thousand Faces!", and make a couple gnarly gurns, and that was the joke, but there were people in the crowd who would keep count "that bum, he only did 750!" Like that guy on your blog in the responses who complains about the wine pairings! In a tent! In a field!
