  1. I've wondered about that place, that whole strip mall is pretty dumpy, and I try to be especially alert when I go to either the Office Depot or the VA ABC there, due to the "freestyle driving" I witness, and that creepy sports bar that's there. I can't imagine that complex is long for this world with all the development in the area, but then, Merrifield Garden Center seems to be an institution on the other corner that will last.
  2. My sincere apologies, I posted at work and I've noticed lately the IT gremlins have gotten better at screwing with my participation in forums. What I intended to say was that last Friday I picked up lunch for a friend and myself at Red Apron. Our choices were from the hot sandwich selection; the Meatball and Muffaletta, which we split back at her house. Both were delicious. I knew I was not getting a Central Grocery muffaletta, but I really liked it anyway, it was the tenderest Ciabatta style bun I've ever had, usually when I get those they are tough as a shoe. The Meatball was delish, very messy, like a debris po-boy but...meatballs, and well seasoned ones at that. While waiting for my 'wiches, I gazed lovingly at the butcher case. The gent behind it asked if he could help me, and I told him I was just picking up lunch, but I would be back! Everyone who works there was really nice, and I look forward to exploring it further. It reminds me a bit of a German butcher store in my hometown, called "Schneller's" ("The Wurst Place in Town"). I went there with mom when very young, and Bob Schneller would throw me a slice of baloney. My parents later changed their shopping habits to supermarkets, but I returned to Schneller's later in life when I was discovering good food, and fondly remember their smoked chicken breasts, liverwurst with mushrooms, teawursts and levercase (especially when still hot from the oven!!) Sadly, my hometown butcher closed after decades of business, but Red Apron strikes me as a modern version of that.
  3. Couldn't find it on Snopes, but here it is from BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3604278.stm
  4. Curated is especially annoying when used by, say, a DJ, who announces that he has "curated" the audio program. OK Dude, you picked out some songs to play, just say that. I curate my iTunes playlist.
  5. Wikipedia has a good list of cultivars and their origins. The Esopus Spitzenberg originated near where I grew up in the Hudson Valley. My ex claims that an ancestor developed an apple, but that may be puffery.
  6. I am sorry to say that the changes at China Star have erased any of Chef Chang's legacy. I'll tell my friends who have kids in school in the Fredericksburg area to check out his place, though.
  7. "Famous for its Double-Double cheeseburgers, fresh ingredients and discreet biblical citations on its cups and food wrappers, In-N-Out has almost 280 units in five states." Oh good grief, them too? Suddenly I don't care that they're not around here. Maybe they should merge with Alaskan Air and that there Chick Fella'.
  8. I live close to a smaller WF, but since Mackey's comments on NPR and his very insincere "apology", I haven't felt a need to shop there.
  9. 5 points to Gryffindor for the Zappa quote!
  10. Some good things in there, but you'd have to be pretty naive not to know them already. I didn't think referencing Eddie Huang to justify the first essay helped his case though, as that guy is a tool.
  11. Totally agree. Those minimalist menus with no clues on preparation, etc are not appetizing at all, and make me feel like I'm reading the script for an episode of "Chopped".
  12. Do you have to rehydrate them to use, say, marinating in olive oil?
  13. The new Anjelika Film Center at Mosaic has some fancy soda machines, I think they might be the Freestyle, but I didn't get a good look as I was caught up in the Xmas Day throng of filmgoers.
  14. My team went to the Bethesda location for our holiday luncheon, and while my burger was OK, I felt sorry for the servers, who are obviously forced to upsell things to the customers (one of my team had to insist she didn't want the salad dressing the server was pushing), and at one point I noticed all the servers would present a tray to their table and try to sell some sort of offer where you bought glasses and got discounts or something.
  15. Yes, I had them last year, and I have a box of this years, they are pretty good.
  16. Thanks, now I can expand my palate beyond Manchego!! I like the Spanish Olive Oil too.
  17. I made "Ants on a Tree" with an Asian Cucumber salad. I couldn't find black sesame seeds though, so it was kind of a post-exterminator dish.
  18. Watching a friends house and cats, back at my place now, putting ice in plastic bags and keeping it in the freezer until I need to deploy it throughout the fridge as well. Did the same thing at the house. Brought my bike in. I made butternut squash soup last night, and I'll portion it out into containers later. Over the weekend, the stores I went to were stripped of water. I just wanted distilled for my CPAP device, and ran into a friend at Harris Teeter who was looking for the same thing for his partner. We discussed how those who cleaned out the distilled water were probably planning on drinking it, in which case, they'll just wash vital trace minerals out of their system. Karma.
  19. Not to get off topic, but I recall Stan's. You'd get a big glass of booze, and a bottle of tonic to mix in as you wished. Now that's a drink!
  20. In what is currently Gilt in the New York Palace Hotel, once occupied by Le Cirque (Madison Ave & 50th). There are to be three distinct sections; a formal dining room, a bar, and a bistro. Read about it here.
