I've been wanting to try the Clover brewed coffee, so I managed to get a coveted parking space today at the one Starbucks in Falls Church with a Clover machine. Someone was pulling out of a shaded spot, in what has to be one of the stupidest parking lots in town. I didn't have to brandish a weapon or anything to park! So I went in and saw the chalkboard of special coffees. I bought a pound of Gold Coast and ordered a vent of Clover-brewed Komodo Dragon. "Do you take milk in your coffee?" "Sometimes" "Well, this will be filled to the rim, take a sip rather than spilling any out if you want room". I watched the machine at work, which was entertaining. I didn't bother to stop at the sugar/milk bar, and drove home. I picked it up, and took a sip while waiting at a light. Oh yes, this doesn't need any additives! I'm sipping it now, and very much enjoying it. I wish every Starbucks had a Clover.

No argument with that, but since my current situation is living in VA and working in MD, it's not likely I'll be making a special trip to DC, with all the hassle that includes, for a cup of coffee. Chains to the rescue!

I walked by the (now closed with brown paper over the windows) Caribou Coffee on my way to Trader Joe's on Rt. 7 in Falls Church over the weekend, and noted that the sign says it is slated to become a Peets! I did a happy dance. Now I won't have to suffer the obnoxious, entitled types to get to the Starbucks in the WF parking lot on the other side of Rt. 7.

The more you make risotto, the more you can 'push the envelope'. I had read that restaurants make it halfway through the stir/add broth process earlier in the day. I've tried doing that and it stands up pretty well to such abuse.

Sunday evening dinner was a boneless Leg 'o Lamb (Legolam, wasn't he a character in the Hobbit?)1 Said lamb was done in the Julia Child style larded with garlic cloves and covered with a paste of dijon, soy sauce, olive oil and rosemary. It was accompanied by white rice and roasted asparagus. A friend brought a bottle of a temparnillo/cabernet blend. And immediately after dinner, Game of Thrones. 1Well, he was in the parody "Bored of the Rings"

CG, at least pre-Katrina was always happy to wrap one to go securely enough to pack in your luggage to enjoy after getting home (don't think I could manage to eat one sitting in coach, and besides, if you wait, the bread will have soaked up the goodness and be even better).

A little man walked up and down, To find an eating place in town. He read the menu through and through, To see what fifteen cents could do. One meat ball, One meat ball, He could afford but one meat ball. He told the waiter near at hand, The simple dinner he had planned. The guests were startled one and all, To here that waiter loudly call, One meat ball, One meat ball, This here gent wants one meat ball. The little man felt ill at ease, Said, "Some bread, sir, if you please." The waiter hollered down the hall, "You gets no bread with one meatball. The little man felt very sad, For one meat ball is all he had, And in his dreams he hears that call, You gets no bread with one meat ball. One meat ball, One meat ball, You gets no bread with one meat ball.

Is this a place worth going to after work, or are they closed, or everything is sold for the day, or just the stale stuff is left?

You are probably right. Compare the comments section of the NYT (thoughtful, insightful) for any story to that of the WaPo (hillbilly cage match).

"Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas" (1971) by Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005)
MsDiPesto replied to DaveO's topic in Literature
When I was 12, his Hells Angels book was out in paperback at the local corner grocery/candy store and I bought it (not sure what that says about me at 12 ). Imagine my surprise when I was in study hall in high school and a friend passed me the latest Rolling Stone that had a large excerpt of F&LinLV. I was blown away and devoured it. When F&L on the Campaign Trail came out, I read that. Later, in college, I took a class that examined several contemporary works (Joan Didion, etc) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was one of them. He was scheduled to do a reading at my school too, but when I showed up to the lecture hall with a friend, there was a note saying it was cancelled to a death in Thompson's family. Maybe Thompson himself put that note up and spent the evening in one of the local watering holes. Check it out Don, you can get a rush just from reading it.- 8 replies

Did you see the nastygram someone sent into his chat yesterday, March 26? Q. Time for someone newIsnt the Wp giving early outs? If so why dont you take one so subscribers and readers can enjoy someone new. Someone who isnt so prissy and pretentious and has a clue about food. Its time for you to start checking out assisted living communities. "“March 26, 2014 11:15 AM Permalink A. Tom Sietsema : Have a nice day! "“ March 26, 2014 11:18 AM My reply would not have been nearly as gracious as Tom's.

I'm hoping the Caribou next door to me becomes a Peet's. When I first had Caribou in airports out west, it was good, but I went to the one near me and asked for something bold and hearty and they gave me dishwater. I became familiar with Peets during business trips to SF.

I've entertained the idea of getting one from Edmund Scientific for the geekiness quotient.

I would agree that they must be recreations, I doubt prison guards were taking photos of food decades ago in any of those cases. The photos are interesting combined with the name, crime, and other data. And they likely didn't come on fine china. A single olive?

Interesting! And you know it all comes from someplace near each facility, like "Big Earl's Bar & Grille (Ask About our Special Room for Bowling Banquets!)".

A Budding Entrepreneur - A Girl Scout Sets Up Shop

I think the Girl Scout should receive a merit badge in Entrepreneurism for this! -
There's a special on Tabasco sauce on TV now and then. I think they have some peppers growing on the island for visitors to see, but not for serious crop. What I found interesting was just how corrosive an atmosphere is in the warehouses. They have to replace fork lifts much more frequently than most industry, and they showed an "old" (not really old) fork lift which looked like it was kept in battery acid.
