  1. I don't suppose that great deli that was on Wolf Rd. near the airport is still there? I think it was called Jack's? It's been awhile since I've been in that area.
  2. In tomato season, you can use stale bread for panzanella.
  3. My impression of the Galleria is that it is not meant for drones like me, but rather for people who departed their home countries silently and quickly with lots of cash stuffed in suitcases.
  4. Misconstrued?? Sounds like a perfect time to have replied: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
  5. Freaked out Virginians will descend on the markets like a plague of locusts. They'll even strip the shelves of distilled water, so desperate are they in their zeal to insure their need for the security of having supplies to last until summer.
  6. I no longer buy the baby cut carrots because they began to taste terrible a few years ago. I've also heard of "milled carrots".
  7. I have a 4.5 lb boneless leg 'o lamb, which will be served with spaghetti squash garnished with sundried tomato pesto, a medley of white, brown, wild and red Texmati rice, and green beans almondine. The lamb will be covered with a mixture of Dijon mustard, garlic, soy sauce, ginger, olive oil and rosemary.
  8. I feel the same way about anything with lavender as an ingredient.
  9. I maintain that my issue with cilantro is that I can appreciate it if it is used sparingly, but our society has embraced the herb so much over the last two decades that I began to encounter dishes that were prepared with a heavy hand on the cilantro, and that turns me off because it overrides all the other flavors. For those who don't like beets, I have made a beet rosti dish that you may like. I'm sure it's available on line.
  10. I'm not a fan of okra. I'm not adventurous when it comes to fish, so no mussels, clams, oysters, eel, uni for me. I'm good with tuna and salmon, even in sushi form though and crab in the form of crabcakes. I've never cared for the taste of peaches either. No offal for me.
  11. The Wagyu Pastrami in the "draft menu" sounds good. But every time I go to Vienna for something, I feel like I get sucked into a temporal black hole as I seem to spend a lot of time getting there and out again due to traffic.
  12. Trader Joe's bag of julienned root vegetables looks very attractive on the outside of the bag. Slim, elegant sticks of parsnip, beet, carrot, and sweet potato. Alas, all pretenses of elegance disappear when you open the bag and find those graceful forms are absent, and it turns out to be short, stumpy, crudely hacked up versions of those four vegetables.
  13. Like Don, I bought 2 bags of Kit-Kat bars (I always try to get something I'll like) at CVS Halloween afternoon. I was house/cat sitting that evening, and I used to live in the same neighborhood, so I knew there would not be tons of kids but wanted to be prepared. There's also a very good haunted house done every year a couple blocks over, and I think every kid went there this year. I got one group of about seven kids from outside the neighborhood who had to be taught that I am the distributor of treats and you won't be sticking your hands in the bowl. The youngest demanded another bar. I asked her to move out of the way while I gave one to the shy young girl dressed as a rabbit in the back of the horde.
  14. When I renew my lease, the landlord gives me a choice: $25 of free gas, which is the better choice, or $25 of Ledo's (Tyson's) food. I've only been to that location a couple of times (come to think of it, it's the only Ledo's I've ever patronized). It's like stepping back into the 1970's. Plus, a lot of jerks think nothing of just parking on the curb in front of that Ledo's while they go wait for a pizza or whatever, creating a one-lane aisle outside and lots of death glares from other drivers.
  15. I like Collards. It would be great if they became an antidote to the ubiquitous kale on menus.
  16. if you're watching calories, don't get the Balti Pies. I looked at the label and each of the two "pies" is something like 690 calories each!!!
  17. I stopped by the FC Market for the first time this summer on Saturday. I had to park in the back by the park because of some old biddy in an SUV who was meandering about the area, not using turn signals, etc. Stokowski had a couple of new items, I tried a piece of rabbit sausage that was good, and bought a pack of Bacon Brats that put Red Apron to shame. I mostly went to get tomatoes, but I also bought a nice big eggplant with the idea of making baba ganoush. I paid $4.50 for one eggplant!! Trader Joe's has them for $1.87 each. This is why I usually sleep in Saturday mornings, the prices are just over the top. Oh, I ended up throwing that eggplant out. It was OK, but when I got around to it it was cold, since I grilled it at a friends and took it home, and the sight of the seeds after I peeled it turned me off.
