  1. I looked at the menu, not sure what the topping called "black onion" is, unless they mean onion seeds?
  2. I was shopping at Tysons I yesterday, and decided I wanted a burger to bring home for lunch. It had been a long time since I tried Elevation Burger, and had never tried any but the original Falls Church location. I ordered a Half-The-Guilt (one regular beef patty, and one non-meat patty. You get a choice of Vegitarian or Vegan, so I got the Vegan version, and cheese. And an order of Fresh Fries. It was so disappointing. The half and half burger was OK, although my body has been telling me I should not have eaten that all day today. But the really sad part was the fries...I used to love their fries. I don't think they have changed the oil in the fryer at this location in ages. Any potato taste was overwhelmed by odd and "off" flavors. After a few test bites, the rest (it's a lot of fries) went in the garbage disposal.
  3. I grew up in the Hudson Valley, and from the mid-70s to early 80's attended an annual party at a friends house that drew people from all over. One person came from Binghamton every year with the makings for Spiedie's. He went by "Binghamton Bob" and was a Dead Head. Bob brought at least two pre-marinated varieties of protein each year from a short list of beef, lamb, pork and chicken. His contribution was very popular, to say the least.
  4. I finally got to Taco Bamba tonight. It was a Downton Abbey double bill at my friends house so I got it to go. I had the Taco Carnitas, and the El Gringo. My viewing companion had a Pork Tamale w/Salsa Verde, and the Taco Tinga (stewed chicken). I also bought a bag of Chicarrones. My friend said her Taco Tinga was very good, but for some reason her first bite of her tamale left her with the impression that it was incendiary, so I traded her my El Gringo (since I live closer to TB and can get more anytime). I didn't get the impression that it was all that hot. It was nicely steamed. I'm not sure where the Salsa Verde went, and next time I'll get the salsa in the cooler to go with. All in all we really like it, and all that food and tip cost around 20 bucks. The Carnitas were good, but I wished they were moister. I heard the El Gringo was good. I'll be going back for sure.
  5. I'd love to see some freshman congressman and family from one of the yahoo states wrestling with a pig. "I know what I'm doing...oops, sorry dear."
  6. Hot time in the old town that night, this passage is particularly amusing: "When Investigator Jones went to the back room where the altercations had taken place, he saw several of the tables turned over, broken glass scattered all over the floor along with women's shoes left behind as well as pieces of hair extensions and wigs scattered on the floor."
  7. Do not bother with the frozen deep dish Pepperoni Pizza. Really.
  8. They need to get on the advertising campaign. "Get revved up with Emeril's Hi-Octane Custom Blend! Bam!"
  9. Red Medicine in L.A. had a spat with the L.A. Times reviewer a few years ago. They closed Halloween night, supposedly due to overhead and are taking a "better offer".
  10. A friend asked me to assist her with the production of an "Orphans Thanksgiving", so for the first time in years, I'll have a Thanksgiving dinner with other humans. Usually I go to the movies and get chinese food. So, my contributions are a Ginger Cheesecake I made on Saturday, Curried Roasted Butternut Squash Soup I made Sunday, and either tonight or tomorrow I'll make a Beet and Coriander puree. The hostess is contributing wine, The Bird (from Washington Green Grocers), Sage Dressing, Cranberry Compote, a Green Bean casserole, and the dining space. Probably about 9 people will attend.
  11. You'll be happy to know that it's in the running! Although I did see a dairy free Carrot-ginger soup with Harissa on Serious Eats last night. I would probably leave out the Harissa so guests don't get overheated.
  12. I have a new fave: Kraft's Mayo. I noticed that Cook's Illustrated liked it, so I made a point of buying a jar. It's like the crack of mayonnaise!
  13. I have been invited to help a friend produce a Thanksgiving for "orphans" like us. So far roughly a dozen said they are coming. I made Escarole soup yesterday as a test. I'm leaning toward carrot or red pepper soup, or celeriac for T-Day.
  14. The CM II parking lot is one that I will not voluntarily enter and exit, so that kept me from going there. And the prices.
  15. About a week after I posted above, I went back and bought some at the FC farmers' market, and fried them in some oil...possibly canola as I was not sure how to treat them. I liked them and plan to incorporate Dean's tips the next time I have some.
  16. I came home from ATL last night, and got to visit with some old friends while there. The first night I was there, one friend and I cruised around, I was too tired to really make an attempt at finding a gem, (but did see an Indian place that looked good, and others as well), and voiced a requirement for vegetables as part of any meal. So we ended up at a default; Ted's Montana in Decatur. I had never been so I enjoyed the novelty, and we got to catch up with each other and closed the joint. I liked my bison meatloaf and chopped salad. My friend had a bison burger of some kind, which he enjoyed. The complimentary fresh pickles were addicting, and the onion rings are very very good and non-greasy. I had a lemon drop martini and a glass of Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel. The next night, they took me to Matt's Rib Shack. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was tasty and of good portion, but they let me sample their slab of ribs and I knew I should have gotten the ribs. Fun place. We sat outside so we could talk, as there was a live blues band dominating the inside dining area. While inside ordering, I observed that they had some of the most effective A/C in humid Atlanta. I had a draft Honker Ale from Goose Island, and a bag of chips. Finally, after checking out, I was taken to Cafe Intermezzo for brunch, where I had a Cafe Cubano and a Duck Omelet before hitting the road, which really hit the spot. Their desserts looked awesome. I wish I had more time to explore the offerings in the metro area. I'll be back.
