  1. Get your spelling right if you're going to come in here and question gnatharobed. It's "Il Mee" and "Hee Been." You're welcome to come in and speak your mind, but if you don't do it with intelligence, you'll be taken down in about two seconds. And as a general reminder to restaurant professionals here: it's always a good idea to disclose any professional affiliations in your signature file. Cheers, Rocks
  2. Yo, Sonya... I would have kicked your ass tonight. I had gone to Oohhs and Aahhs earlier this evening and gotten my food for the next three days: 6-7 chicken wings, mac-and-cheese, greens, cornbread, all bulldozed into a styrofoam container and sitting in my car for future consumption. A full dinner at Tabaq Bistro: four courses with bread, wine, dessert... Got home, looked in the container, couldn't resist, and started shoveling. Ten minutes later: gone. Minimum 5-7 pounds of food. Total destruction. And I'm still hungry. Top that, black widow! Rocks P.S. Hmm... maybe you could... Did you really eat 11 pounds of cheesecake in 9 minutes?
  3. Where is it? BTW, the place next to Cone E. Island at 2000 Penn shops has a big sign out front that says "Bon Apetit." Typo or not, that pretty clearly says "bon ape tit" to me. Cheers, Rocks
  4. And don't forget the potato chips it came with - simply the best potato chips I've ever tasted. The big hindrance here is that they don't have it any more.
  5. I've had horrific steak tartare at both The Guards and Bistrot du Coin. Had a 2-AM version once at Bistro Francais and I enjoyed it at the time. It used to be fabulous at Les Halles (back when they had their own butcher) but the last one I had there (in 2004) was so bad it was inedible. At all of these late-night hangouts it probably depends on the night and is a dice-roll. Marcel's is excellent, and I've had really good versions this year at Circle Bistro and Poste (although both of these places offer small portions and Poste's is in the form of a miniburger). Cheers, Rocks
  6. if you only knew what that meant in French...
  7. On my honor, and on my life, I swear to you that, as surely as the grass is green and the sun will rise tomorrow, there is a restaurant opening in the Calvert Shoppes in Del Ray which is going to be called... are you ready? make sure to swallow all liquids before reading this... drum roll... it's called... Pho King
  8. When you're George and Charles Parker? Nope. (Was it Sette Osteria or Sette Bello?)
  9. Let me respond, not as "moderator," but as a regular old poster and devil's(-food cake) advocate: can anyone really blame Warren Brown for stepping into his celebrity? Yes, some things in life can be annoying, but who would turn it down? I've never seen the TV show, but from what I've gleaned, this whole glasses-wearing dreadlock-sporting hippy-esque cake-loving thing is a big ol' schtick, plain and simple, and has nothing to do with the actual cake at this point, other than the cake being a theme and launching point. Give Brown a crewcut and take off his specs, and he's no longer a tele-marketable commodity. So that makes 10,385 image-driven personae on the tube instead of 10,384, but that doesn't make the guy a bad person, in-the-wrong, or even vacuous, does it? Okay, all this having been said: I fully support calling people down on riding a PR-wave not supported by underlying substance, so if his cakes really suck with such desperation, intensity and fervor, then carry on and nail him for having the gall to open more bakeries, but not for merely being famous. Cheers, Rocks
  10. [i can't move it if I haven't yet seen it he says, while looking the other way for a few hours...]
  11. Yep. Whatcha wanna know? Nab a seat at the tiny sushi bar in back if you can. This place also offers shabu-shabu which is uncommon for the area. Good but not earth-shattering quality. Pleasant atmosphere. They have a "sashimi lunch special" which is worth ordering carryout if you're in the area - they load you down with fish and it's only about $12 (get the osuimono soup rather than the miso for a change of pace with your lunch special (both are powdered)). Cheers, Rocks
  12. Terry has just written an interesting essay on big-name Champagnes being subject to heat damage here.
