  1. something must have changed because just today i split the oyster po' boy with my +1 (as well as the holiday foie gras special) and we each had 3 oysters on each half sandwich. my half did have too much remoulade sauce, but i just scraped some off and it was still delicious. the foie gras sandwich was tasty - soft and melted in my mouth, though, it was a tad greasy and i didn't really taste any of the truffle oil. i'd be curious to hear what others thought of the foie gras sandwich special.
  2. i also have not been able to get to philly that often, so i can only offer advice from what my cousin has been recently telling me: Mercado is a good bet for BYOB. Also, although this is not BYOB, i hear that wednesdays at fork is supposed to be really great. sorry i cannot offer more details.
  3. christmas day: having a filipino shanghai lumpia rolling party at the +1's parents' house. they have no idea how to do it, so we're going to show them! hooray for lumpia!
  4. that's funny. i went on monday as well and also got the madrange ham sandwich. it was simple yet delicious. my +1 got one of the sausage sandwiches (not the italian, but the other one) and it was also tasty. i went to breadline the week before they started having the foie gras sandwich special. i believe it is a special every thursday during the holiday season, so you are still in luck. though, i do not remember seeing when the special will end.
  5. i also wanted to thank dean and danielk for putting this together (and for coordinating rides to bob's!). i'm really glad that kevin and i were able to come out to our first dr event and meet everyone. we will definitely be attending more dr events in the future! that said, i also thoroughly enjoyed our shabu shabu (pork, lamb, beef, tripe) as well as numerous dishes bob and his staff brought out throughout the evening. i agree with most people - the lion's head meatballs were spectacular! samantha
  6. re: tony luke's this is just a heads up for anyone going to philly between dec. 25 and jan 1. tony luke's won't be open between these two dates. there is a sign saying they would be open on jan 2nd though. oh well!
  7. I know this might be too late, but does anyone still have space for two people (me and the +1) in their car from the metro to bob's tonight? If not, it's no big deal - I'm not using crutches so I should be totally fine to walk there if necessary. thanks!
  8. oh. definitely prepared jello. we'll go and visit his parents and his mom will make a jello mold with fruit in it, and i'll look over and he's scooping the jello onto the potato chips and mowing. strange boy. (i wonder if he's tried just the powder packets and potato chips... )
  9. spaghetti and hotdogs (like, chopped up hotdogs in the sauce). oh, and the SO dips his potato chips in jello. this is the only occasion in which ruffled chips are ok to eat (at least this is what he claims). i guess non-ridged potato chips just don't hold up?
  10. I have to completely agree. I love TdA, especially for happy hour, but when I went during RW, none of the items on their RW menu were on their regular menu (I think). And, I should mention the dishes I tasted during RW were poorly executed, yet every other time I've gone (non-RW times) the dishes were excellent. The service I received, on the otherhand, was (and still is, everytime I go) spectacular. If you want to try TdA, if you can afford it, I would try going there during non-RW, or if you can't afford it, try the happy hour (and the sangria).
  11. i'm eating this ooohhh..."limited edition" caramel apple light yogurt from safeway. it's actually pretty nasty.
  12. speaking of darts, where is a good place to play darts in the district? (no plastic tipped, free, good beer, good bar food, and yes, i know this is a food forum, but i had to ask)
  13. well, if the dinner is at 7pm, then i'll probably just stay at work and take the red line to rockville. if it's only a 1/2 mile from the metro, my +1 and i can probably walk. but if it's more than that, i might have to coordinate a carpool (or just take the bus) because i sprained my ankle about 2 months ago and it hasn't healed yet. but i appreciate the carpool help.
  14. ok. count me and the +1 for bob's on december 18. i'm looking forward to my first dr event!
  15. i am a newbie and am considering going to bob's shabu shabu on the 18th (but don't count me as a definite yet!). i see that it is in rockville. can i get there from the metro?
  16. i usually feed my (obscenely large) cats science diet "lite" cat food. i'm not sure it's working though (my vet friends tell me it should!). my cats have ballooned in the past year that i've been living in dc. so i'd be interested in hearing about any results you have in making your lite (gourmet?) food for your cat. i do know, though, that part of the reason my cats have gained so much weight is because they aren't able to run around outside like they used to when i lived elsewhere. so my advice: check portions of cat food when you feed them (something that i need to start doing), and get a mini-treadmill for them to run on for some exercise, in case your cat cannot get out to the gym. hehe
  17. there were a series of either/ors that colman andrews threw out to the chefs. mcdonalds or burger king? white truffle or black truffle? martha stewart or nigella lawson? all three chefs obviously chose the latter, and AB recounted a story about how he and a bunch of other male chefs were sitting around with nigella, trying to gross her out by telling her weird things they had eaten (cobra's heart was one i seem to recall). but nigella wasn't grossed out, and in fact, the boys loved her even more when she told them she had eaten an aborted pig fetus.
  18. ah! yes, the BK/McD response was great: "that's like asking herpes or chlamydia!"
  19. hmph. i had this feeling that someone was going to go up to the mic and try to get a job from michel richard or jose andres. (not that there's anything wrong with that) when colman andrews asked the either or "prosciutto or jamon serrano" (was that the question? it was hard for me to hear) and m.richard chose the jamon serrano and j.andres got up and kissed him on the forehead, did anyone else think that m.richard looked offended? i also thought it was great that when jose andres walked out, he was carrying the bottle of wine and plate of food, and even went back to get more during the discussion. i think he's like that all the time. i went to minibar in september, and he came out and he seemed like a pretty jovial person.
  20. Did anyone else happen to attend the Smithsonian Resident Associates "Three Chefs: Anthony Bourdain, Jose Andres, and Michel Richard" at the Department of Interior last night? I thought it was great, and my favorite quote of the night came from Anthony Bourdain regarding Rachel Ray's $40 a day show, "Try Tipping Bitch!" hahahaha
  21. i'm not sure where to post this, but i'll try here. i'm wondering if anyone out there knows how chaotic it gets at BdC for the Beaujolais Nouveau Party this Wednesday night. or is there someplace better to go for this event? thanks.
  22. does anyone know if 100% of the cost of the $125 (per ticket) will be donated to dc central kitchen?
  23. i never knew about taconelli's until about a month ago, and now every time i go back to philly, i feel the need to eat their pizza! another place that i go to every time i'm in philly on a sunday, is beau monde. it's a creperia on 6th and bainbridge. they serve a brunch menu (i get the mushroom, roquefort cheese, sunny side up egg crepe almost every time) and have great spicy bloody marys!
