  1. Nope - can't afford to! I've had some younger ones which were pretty fabulous. But even buying the younger ones and storing - RdV comes in 2x-3x the price of GM per bottle.
  2. I arrange the smoked salmon slices on wax paper, slightly overlapping. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese, sprinkle with capers and scallions, and roll up. Slice and serve on a Carr's black pepper table water cracker. Kinda evocative of bagel and lox... RdV is better than Glen Manor, and there are a couple of others, but they play at a higher price point. I probably agree that for wines in the $20s and $30s, there isn't a better VA winery. But while I'm happy to support the local business, and Jeff and Kelly are fabulous hosts, you can certainly buy better CA/OR wines at that price point.
  3. Dinner party last night: Smoked salmon pinwheels Kentucky Kiss cocktails (basically a Knob Creek bourbon old fashioned with strawberry instead of orange) Brie en croute with apricot Glen Manor Hodder Hill 2014 Cornish Game Hens with pomegranate reduction, roasted over eggplant and leek Maple honey carrots Twice baked potatoes Glen Manor Hodder Hill 2012 (OMG this is amazing) Baked apple dumplings Cranberry ice cream
  4. They still haven't been to Brooklyn's or Deli City. Harumph.
  5. It's always packed at dinner, but we'll see how that goes a year from now after it's not the latest thing. I will say that the other restaurants in that complex are always busy.
  6. It's "five courses", one of which is dessert, and included a tasting of one of his soups first (not part of the five). So that's 4 savory courses, all of which I would call a moderate appetizer size. At the end of the evening, spread over about 2.5 hours (though it could go quicker if you liked) I was pleasantly full but not stuffed.
  7. Just FYI, but we were there 2 nights before Simul. We also went for the tasting menu, but other than some ingredient overlaps (and the bisque), we had a completely different meal than they did, and different pairings as well. The core menu at Corduroy may be static, but when you get the tasting menu, which is a steal at $70 for 5 courses, you definitely get a different experience.
  8. I think they used to have an official "no jeans" policy, but abandoned it some time back because of the convention center traffic that they get as walk-in.
  9. Mark will work with you on a wine pairing in your budget. We did one last night; a mid-range pairing for the $70 5-course menu was $55.
  10. Making progress, though a long way to go. There are probably 15 places worth eating at in a 2 mile stretch of 355 in Rockville. But Chantilly is no help to an Annapolis resident commuting to Tysons.
  11. I'd do the Rockville Chinese tour. It's probably the one cuisine that MoCo has a lot of that is weaker in the rest of the DMV area.
  12. We went on Sunday night to sit at the bar for one last bisque and hanger steak. Even at 5:30p, there was already a wait for tables. Tonight is the last night - we had thought about going, but I think there will be a line at the door when they open at 5p. So we said our farewells to Nick and Elliott on Sunday.
  13. You'll never get consensus on a date. Pick a date, book it, and we'll all do our best to drum up a crowd. July 29 sounds great to me.
  14. They are mobbed during every opening hour, and expect to be until the lights turn off. If you plan on going, either hit the bistro and go as the doors open, or make a reservation for the dining room. Either way, expect a leisurely meal. The kitchen and staff go into the weeds pretty much immediately. Food last night was excellent as always, but we were there 3+ hours.
  15. When I lived in Philly in the 70s, soccer was certainly not a major US sport. There was a league, and Philly had a team (I had to look up the name - that's how much it stayed with me), but it was a curiosity sport, more followed by European and Latin immigrants. Few of the players were American. That's changing today. MLS is clearly not yet on the level of the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL, but the league is stable, attendance is growing, and television ratings are rising and starting to rival the NHLs. My kids generation (they're 18 and 20) has always known soccer as a major sport in this country.
  16. Note - first Super Bowl, not first NFL title. They won NFL titles in '48, '49, and '60, before it was called the Super Bowl.
  17. I was born in Philly, though I have not lived there since I was 10. But I'm completely a Philly fan for sports. This was the last of the four major sports for Philly to win in my lifetime. Flyers in 1974 and 1975, Phillies in 1980 (and 2008), Sixers in 1983, and now the Eagles in 2018.
  18. This is why we always land up back at Fort Hunt Park - no harassment on the alcohol.
  19. Pretty sure that only Drift is closing; Fishnet in College Park remains open. I can't say why he had to close, but the rent in that space must have been tremendous, and it doesn't feel like he was able to get enough business at a high enough ticket price to keep it going.
