  1. Any suggestions for Poke in or near Old Town Alexandria? Looking for some new lunch options.
  2. Well this sucks. Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors, I am filled with mixed emotions as I announce that Grapeseed will be serving its final meals this month. Sad, because I have given so much of myself and asked so much of others, only to fall short of some of my more ambitious goals. Grateful, for all the great people who have pitched in to help me as I often needed help. And Relieved, that I can finally schedule a couple of orthopaedic surgeries and start walking like a human again, get to know my family, and find a new challenge. I take great pride in what we accomplished here and even in the things I tried to accomplish and failed. Learning all the way. It has been a long, fruitful 17+ years here in Bethesda. This town was very different in 1999 when I first took over this space. 17 years of a lot of great food, serious and whimsical wines, too many memories to count, and even 6 or 7 marriages between staff members who met here at work. ( I am somehow quite proud of that) Through the years we have won awards for both our fantastic food and our wine list, and unending thanks goes to all the staff members who made that all possible over the years. From Best New Restaurant, Best Chef in Bethesda, to Best Bar in Bethesda to Best Wine List we have done things we can all be proud of. There have been so many great people, I wish you all the best. Our last service is scheduled for July 29th, and we will continue to make great food, including our usual fun tasting menu on the weekends. All of the wines on our award winning list will be offered for 33% off this week , 50% off later in the month, and be further discounted to “Best Offer” by the end of the month. We have made so many friends, and watched so many relationships blossom here over the years, I hope that you will be able stop by or make reservations for one more meal with us. (Or three, there is a lot of wine here) So please find the time to visit, pat your favorite staff member on the back and tip one back for all of us. Thank you for 17+ great, great years. Jeff Heineman Grapeseed
  3. Closing. Received the following e-mail from Ripple. Dear friends, It is with great sadness that we will be closing Ripple later this month. Despite a great sense of pride and accomplishment for everything that our team has achieved over the last seven years, the reality of a slowing business means we will no longer be able to serve our guests in Cleveland Park. We will remain open through dinner service on June 24th, and hope you will be able to join us over the coming days to share another memorable meal with us, or perhaps a glass or two of wine at the bar. We believe that our food is as good as it ever has been, and less than a month ago we received our highest rating ever from Tom Sietsema in The Washington Post Spring Dining Guide. But, unfortunately, our reviews and recent acclaim have not translated to the bottom line. We are deeply grateful for your support over the past seven years. We have made fantastic lifelong friends. Couples have met at Ripple, gotten engaged at Ripple, and even celebrated their weddings at Ripple. We have been fortunate to have a warm, wonderful staff who have built connections with our guests and provided memorable meals. Some of our staff have even gotten married after meeting here! This has always been a place about family, and we will dearly miss all of you - our extended family. Whether you found us in June of 2010, or had your first meal with us much more recently, we are forever grateful and hope we can serve you again - either at Roofers Union in Adams Morgan, or somewhere else in the future. We are grateful to our wonderful staff, some of whom have been with us from the very start. We will try to help them find new jobs - either at Roofers Union or at other restaurants. It is because of the talented chefs and servers and dishwashers and line cooks that we were fortunate enough to win Best Upscale Casual Restaurant, as well as Wine Program of the Year in 2014 from the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, in addition to numerous awards for our wine and beverage program. To all the members of our team over the years, we can never thank you enough. You are the best and we wish you all the best. We have a wonderful landlord whose family operated a restaurant here starting in the 1932. We are grateful for their support. We love Cleveland Park. We grew up around here, we live around here, and we hope for the best for everyone along the strip between Macomb and Porter. We know that many of our neighbors are also suffering, and we encourage you to support these local businesses and restaurants. Our final dinner service will be Saturday June 24. Until then, we will continue to bring you the best food, produce and drinks from the finest local farmers and other sources. We are still serving an amazing menu from our extremely talented Executive Chef Ryan Ratino, and we will be offering great half price deals on many of the rare and eclectic wines on our bottle list. We have smaller snacks at the bar, and everything from a-la-carte options to a full tasting menu in the dining room. We would love to see you in the coming days - and we encourage you to stop by or make reservations for one more meal with us in Cleveland Park. In the words of Robert Hunter... "Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men." With great appreciation, Ripple
  4. We installed a Marvel under-cabinet unit about 12 years ago and it has worked great, no issues. I think we paid about $700 for a floor model.
  5. Southside 815 in Old Town has a pretty good version.
  6. Been here twice for lunch. Have tried the pulled pork plate and pulled chicken plate. Both are nice sized servings and come with 3 different sauces on the table. The also come with 2 sides - have tried the cole slaw, mac and cheese and potato salad. The sides in my opinion are nothing special but the meats are pretty solid. Both times have not been very busy at lunch compared to the Overwood days - hope they make it.
  7. We were here last Saturday night with 2 other couples for a friend's birthday. I didn't do the ordering but we shared nearly every small plate on the menu plus a few others. We did the family meal, which is normally for 4 and then added a bunch of dishes. Hits seemed to be the smoked cod bruschetta, feta stuffed squid, tortellini and the bison steak. Our server was awesome with helping to order the right amount of food and picking out a couple bottles of wine. We were seated in at table in front of kitchen area. Great time was had by all. Looking forward to returning and sitting in courtyard. We followed up dinner with the Catch Me; Magic Duel at the Mayflower - really good magic show.
  8. Headed here in April. Any recent reports.

  11. This place was great last year and might fit your 3-5 slot - very small and limited seating. http://167raw.com/charleston/
  12. I may be wrong on this point but I think you can only apply for Global Entry at airports and maybe the Reagan Building downtown. Pre Check is available at many locations outside the airport. I got mine at some place on Duke St in Alexandria.
  13. Received the following e-mail today. FAREWELL TO THE ERA OF OVERWOOD! Dear Neighbors, Friends & Family, After nearly 10 wonderful years of business in Old Town, Alexandria Overwood will close our doors on August 14th. We have thoroughly enjoyed serving you over the years, and will be forever grateful both for your support as well as the amazing efforts of our employees, both current and past. We hope you will stop in and see us another time or two before we say goodbye. Come enjoy your favorite Overwood dish and our greatly discounted wine list! We will re-open around September 5th, as MYRON MIXON'S PITMASTER BARBEQUE. Myron is the star of the TV series, BBQ Pitmasters, Smoked, and BBQ Rules. He is a NY Times Best Selling author as well as a champion BBQ competitor in the United States. His two books are titled, "BBQ Rules" and "Smoking With Myron Mixon". We will alert you when we will re-open. With Heartfelt Gratitude, The Overwood
  14. Wife and I stopped in on Sunday night for dinner. We opted to sit at the bar. Place was empty when we arrived and maybe half full when we left. Location is a tough spot in Bethesda with no easy parking and off the main strip of Bethesda Row. The wine list is very odd - only 1 white and 1 red by glass - both $9. We split an appetizer of the sauteed octopus ($14) which was generous sized portion and cooked perfectly. We both selected entrees from our friendly bartender. Wife had the Shrimp & Scallops ($32). I don't recall how many of each she received but shrimp were very large. She did not care for the citrus reduction which she said overwhelmed the dish. I went with the jumbo lump crab cake ($28). Very disappointing crab cake for the price. Bartender sold it as having no filler, which was true. The problem was I could night find any sign of jumbo lump crab in it. Unlikely to return for a full meal any time soon as there are better less expensive options.
