  1. I was thinking the same thing last month when I broke down for one of my 2-3 times a year stops at Popeye's. The biscuits WERE better, just a year ago! The biscuit I had recently was flat, dry and chalky tastig...much more like what I come to expect from KFC. The chicken, however...was just as yummy as ever. I should clarify that I really go here for the chicken crust...it's the part I like and the reason that I usually buy wings...I frankly couldn't care less about the chicken meat itself.
  2. I'm a relative newcomer to this community that Don gave life to 5 years ago. But I am humbled by the grace, kindness and generosity of its members. Thank you for everything you do to foster this lovely world.
  3. The Whole Foods Market in Fairfax (4501 Market Commons Drive, Fairfax, VA‎ - (703) 222-2058‎) would have a selection of cut flower arrangement that you can pick up on the way. Double check, but they should be open on Labor Day.
  4. Yet another jumps aboard this trend. (Is it still a trend when it's gone on this long?) click Dangerously close to the new site of our office on Washingtonian Blvd. I'll be brave and take one for the team when they open...
  5. Hubby and I are up for Sunday, 4/11 at 12:30.
  6. Lovely meal at Rays last night to celebrate Hubby's and my birthday. I was the only one of the 5 of us who had been to RTS before. It was my choice and everyone thought it was a brilliant one. (Ya gotta love a place that makes people think you're brilliant!) I'm not a beef eater generally, but the passion for product that Ray's has makes me love the place. I got so caught up in the excitement I ordered the first steak I had eaten in 12 years. I enjoyed about a third of my filet...but I know I will be paying for the pleasure for a couple of days to come Hangar steaks were probably the most loved cut at the table. Hubby got through a good portion of the Cowboy ribeye. The creamed spinage was accompanied by both plain AND garlic mashed potatoes. Perhaps I've not read this thread carefully enough, perhaps I've missed it...but I don't think anyone has mentioned the fabu mac n cheese! It was bubbling hot from the kitchen and just a bowl full of comfort! A big thank you to Mark who shared his love of zin with us and always makes a meal at Ray's that much more special.
  7. Thanks so much to Daniel K for putting together a great Dim Sum outting at the Silver Fountain! It's been a number of years since I've been out to a really good dim sum meal. It was great to meet a bunch of the DR crowd for the first time. As the newbie at the event, I was told I needed to make the first post (thanks for waiting till the end of the meal to mention that Daniel!). There's no way I'll remember everything we had, but there were very few dishes we didn't like. I stole a menu on my way out to help jog my memory.. We started off with steamed shrimp dumplings, shui mai, steamed shrimp balls and steamed roast pork buns plus what I believe was a fried taro cake (Dave?). I didn't get a chance to try the seamed pork bun, but everything else was as good as I've had in the area. I particularly loved the steamed shrimp balls..so sticky and luscious. Next came a pair of deep fried dumplings..one shrimp and one pork. Pork won out on that one, unanimously I believe. There was a shredded taro cake, we joked that it was a 'Chinese latke'...but darn, if I had just had some applesauce it would have been perfect KMango and perrik were missing the veg, which we had to request. I believe it was broccoli in oyster sauce...but I just couldn't imagine going green with all that wonderful shrimp and pork on the table! I did have some of the pickeled veggies that came to the table, they were a great palate cleanser. Pork and shrimp rice noodle crepes made it to our table...I didn't try the pork but thought the shrimp was pretty good. Not the best I had ever had, but better than a lot of the versions I've had in the area. The duck looked beautiful, but I thought the skin could have been crispier. We had a bowl of tofu with mushrooms and other vegatables in a brown sauce. There was something odd about the sauce and this was the one dish no one seemed to like. I know there were a handful of other thigs on the table that I can't recall, but we were all pretty stuffed when Dave decided it was time for dessert! He managed to snag the last few egg custard tarts left on the cart and wow these were so flakey and light...these things are pure crack! (I'm ashamed to admit I stopped at Maria's on the way home to pick up a box...some of them even made it home ) I hadn't had the sponge cake before today. It's a little sweet, but you can taste that it's fermented. Perrik thought it tasted like sourdough bread, but I thought it tasted like a light beer! More food and fun than should be allowed on a Sunday morning, and all for $20/pp. I can't wait for the next one!
  8. And one more, please? Looking forward to meeting folks at my first event!
  9. Please do, and let us know if you get a repeat performance. I've shied away fro Oro Pomodoro because I can get "eh" pizza in Germantown, so why drive to Rockville? But if it comes close to 2Amy's, it's worth the drive down 355!
  10. Without breading?!?! OMG, who would do such a thing? The breading is why we eat chicken in the first place!
  11. Sign at the Kentlands location still says "coming sooon". I believe this is an outlet of the Ellicott City location. 2 Amy's is just a little too far to really be my go-to pizza place, I'm hopeful that Coal Fired will be it!
  12. I haven't been there in sevearl years, but we had a great time when we did dine there last. If you go, please post your thoughts.
  13. Is there a coralary then? If you live in MoC, but you're willing to trek to Ray's the Steaks because, truely, Mark is so worth that drive; is there a reason to go to Ray's the Classics instead? Since I understand the fried chicken is off the menu, I can't imagine why I would go to RTC instead of RTS.
  14. That same ragu is served over pasta in the Greek Bolognese...same great ragu with a better partner.
  15. I've seen a few mentions of Continental Midtown on this board, while it may not be the finest dining in Phila, I always have a blast when I go. If you've never been , just imagine what Willy Wonka would do if he turned his hand to savory instead of sweet. One of my all-time favorite dishes there is the lobster mac n cheese. Our good friends and Conde Nast were kind enough to post the recipe for us and here's a link...My link [Editor's note: Cookie (along with Gourmet and Modern Bride) went out of business in October, 2009, and this link no longer exists - if anyone can find it in Conde Nast's site, please alert me and I will replace it. DR] Yes, it's enough cheese, cream and butter to choke an ox...but, so yummy! I can't wait to try this.
  16. We rent a house near Wisp and everyone took a turn at dinner. But we did have a great lunch at Mountain State, the brewpub on Sand Run Rd. Beers got a mixed review from our table, and the sangria was disappointing, but oh that flatbread pizza! Hubby and I shared a basil and sausage flatbread, I'm still craving it today!
  17. There are a number of places on that block where you can meet for drinks including 2 Irish bars. The burrata and wild boar pasta are my usual stand-bys.
  18. Ventured out to Sabai Sabai for lunch today. There will be more trips in my future! We tried the Spicy Wings. These are marked mildly spicy, and even those who don't like spicy foods would enjoy these meaty, crispy wings. Smoked tea leaves adorn the plate, I could have done wtihout these as they tasted quite bitter if you accidently bite into one. I had the Pad See-U (wide noodles with black bean sauce). I found the dish a little salty, but the flavor was great and the noodles were perfectly cooked. My companion had Penang Curry, marked very spicy on the menu. You could smell the curry as soon as the dish emerged from the kitchen. I really enjoyed the bite that I got, but the dish was so spicy that I wouldn't have enjoyed a whole order. The Curry Puffs and Thai Battered Calamari that I saw go by both looked great. I can't wait to go back and try the Green Curry. Appetizers run $6.95 to $8.95 and entrees run $8.95 to $18.95.
