  1. I can't speak to this from the viewpoint of a racial/ethinc/cultural minority. I can speak to it from the viewpoint of one with a visible difference that has resulted in the "What's wrong with YOU?" questions and looks. Yes, it is. Always being the teachable moment it exhausting. And really, they have no right to ask anyhow. People are not a sideshow. People only have to be the teachable moment if and when they want to.
  2. When Francis still owned it and cooked there. I loved that place. Although, I miss the chicken liver sauteed in port served on toast and salad.
  3. Last year my friends liked that sandwich (I did not.) This year they find it inedible. Also, don't get the chicken and waffles.
  4. It was a special, so there may not be any more. There was none available at the brewery when we stopped in last Saturday.
  5. I can't tell. (Apparently, they have the pies at the Old Town Alexandria store. Got this picture when the +1 went out from work for lunch.)
  6. It's the bread. We were actually talking about this last night, when a Subway commercial came on tv. I think it smells like 7-11.
  7. Wow, thanks. That would have been way better than the choices when I was a kid. Although in those days, nobody in Rochester had any idea what hummus was. We could get the main hot meal, a toasted cheese, or a PBJ. I hated the years I had to eat school food, Lunchbox food was far better.
  8. Do you have a preferred neighborhood or style, and how many people are you talking about? Private room or semi-private?
  9. I spend a good bit of time in SW (my church is there, and I am working on a large project there at the moment). I have been to Sou'Wester once. And my reason is that for many years I did assume it was too expensive. It is a bit expensive for a regular place, but not for an occasional place. Also, we are much more likely to sit at a bar than at a table, unless we're having a fancy dinner. So, the no bar thing works against them. But we liked it a lot when we went, and will go back.
  10. You know, Equinox is close. They do nice, and they do vegetarian stuff. Worth asking if they do vegan.
  11. Pizza? Paradiso does vegan pizza. Nicer, probably, huh? Firefly? Darlington House? (Obviously left this sitting too long before hitting post!)
  12. If you find it, please post details. I drive this route a couple times a year. I would LOVE a new place to try!
  13. I used to like Chef's in Watkin's Glen. (My parents are from Elmira originally. Many family picnics were held at the glen.) Anyhow, Chef's used to make a pizza burger - a sausage patty with mozzeralla cheese inside and pizza sauce on top. Haven't been there in years though. And the Dairy Queen I usually end up at is at about Shamokin Dam.
  14. Finally got up the street to Three Little Pigs yesterday. We got some pate, and with a stop at La Caprice DC over on 14th St for a wonderful baguette, had delicious pate sandwiches. (baguette, mustard, pate). We also tasted the ham off the leg in what I think of as "that Spanish bar contraption" and really enjoyed it. Also got a nice Alsatian (I think) style sausage, but haven't eaten it yet. This will become a regular stop on the food shopping circuit. Is the Chinese sausage the 'ndj something or other? My friend got that, and it looked about to run out.
  15. It's even been a problem when empty. The new staff just don't pay close enough attention. She does - and as far as I know, she's the only Asian woman there right now. I was in there last night. Service was pretty good! Thanks Don! Someday, I will figure out a polite and effective way to tell people who do not work for me hard things.
  16. How was the service? I am in there regularly, although not in the last week or so, and we have noticed problems with the service cropping back up. I still haven't figured out how to tell Kera that we love her food, but if she's not on the floor, this crop of servers seems to be falling down badly.
  17. Up and down Route 15 - the only way from my Petworth house to my parents' place a bit west of Rochester. I have driven this route SO many times over the years, most recently 2 weeks ago. I actually can't say much about eating along the way. I will confess to a terrible weakness for Dairy Queen, and so will often stop there for road food. (I love onion rings. I love ice cream, even soft serve.) This last time, I stopped at a place I have looked at for years but never gone in. (and looking at their hours, I remember why. They are closed on Sundays. I usually return on Sunday. This time, it was Friday. Will have to stop on the way up next time.) Purity Candy: http://www.puritycandy.com/index.html I mean, I just couldn't resist the sign on the little board outside telling people to come in to see the 70 pound chocolate Easter Bunny! Cool as that was, I did NOT get such a thing. But I got some chocolate. And it is good. And best of all, they make wintergreen patties! I love wintergreen patties. (OK, I love pretty much everything wintergreen.) Just like peppermint patties - a creamy filling covered in chocolate. York stopped making them years ago. My grandfather used to get them (along with regular Hershey bars and peppermint patties) for picnics. He would freeze them, then split them with a sharp knife, and we would use them on s'mores (which we called smashes). I haven't seen these in so long. I didn't buy enough. I see a mail order coming soon. Also, I told my mother about them, and she wants some too. And this place is now a required stop on any trip that passes through Allenwood (factory store, right on Route 15) or Lewisburg (also right on Route 15, but I think you have to turn a corner to get to the store. Yes, looking at the map, you do. Although, it's pretty closer to Roller Mills, a nice antique mall.
  18. Improved - I can read it now. Still rather busy behind the very bright letters though. Thanks.
  19. I find his blog to be that way too. And I admit, I am still annoyed at him for insisting that Ray's the Steaks East River is in Anacostia, then insisting that it didn't really matter where it was, because everyone knows that everything east of the river is Anacostia, and I must be trying to lie about where I lived to make myself feel better. (Note that I live in Petworth.)
  20. I love Litteri and am glad you enjoyed them. But (you knew that was coming, right?), the background on the blog does make it very hard to read, at least in firefox.
