  1. Hey y'all, I'm off to Rochester soon. Have to make a stop in Ithaca too. As ever, I am looking for places to eat, drink, and shop for good food and drink along the way. I need to do some Christmas shopping! I should start a Rochester thread too. Last time I was up there, we hit the Genesee Brew House. It was very good. We'll be going back.
  2. I just wish that we could do as PA does (only in this small case. Not in general.) and allow BYO in places that do not have liquor licenses. That would solve many problems, IMO.
  3. Many years ago, I tended bar at "The Raven Grill" - one night and 2 days a week. (Seriously, it was, like 25 years ago. And yes, we all just called it "The Raven" then too.) It was a slow evening. Sitting at the bar were 3 friends of mine, neighborhood guys. Not too many other people in the place. 2 young kids come in. Sit down. Ask, "What time does the grill close?" (So, obviously new to the neighborhood.) As I pondered what to say, Brian opened his mouth. (This will not end well.) "1964." They practically ran out the door. This was not the intended result, and we felt kinda bad. (But it was an inspired answer.) I hope they eventually came back.
  4. I drink a lot of seltzer, and have for years. I finally got a soda stream a month or so ago. Seltzer with a dash of bitters - we have MANY MANY flavors of bitters here. It's the best. So head off to Ace, buy an assortment of bitters, and all will be well.
  5. "The overnight," occasionally seen as "the overnight hours," appears to be simply overnight, in news-speak. So, "as we head into the overnight, we expect rain." So not restaurant-speak. Just English abuse. (Also, I hate "reach out.")
  6. Cool indeed. Michael - you have done a wonderful job. And Eliot and Nick are fabulous folks who are great at their jobs. I look forward to being their customer for years to come.
  7. At the end of the day we arrive at my latest irritation "the overnight."
  8. I still like Pete's. I have never been to any location other than Columbia Heights though. And they will deliver to me - a GREAT rarity. I just wish they had pineapple. I like pineapple.
  9. I have and love a KitchenAid stick blender - with the whip attachment and the small chopper attachment. It's great for soups, sauces, small food processor jobs (always use it for deviled eggs), and whipping small amounts of stuff like cream or egg whites.
  10. I haven't used my initials for that long, but that's my story too.
  11. What do you want? Dining, or eating? I actually like the Lincoln Diner - as a diner, not as a destination. The Gettysburg Sweet Shop used to be good. They had wonderful Belgian waffles. They did not have those last time I was there. If they are back, might be worth trying again.
  12. Did you see this reader response? "Then take the bus. Cheap restaurants are almost never close to metro stops. However, they are close to public transportation because that's how their underpaid staff gets to work." I actually did laugh at loud at this, because I am a regular bus rider, and I often find people who will take the train would never even THINK of the bus. It was a good answer.
  13. Go early - they have been selling out quickly.
  14. I've bought good (early) strawberries at Columbia Heights the last 2 weeks.
  15. This makes me think of Meridian Pint. No, really. See, upstairs at the Pint is a restaurant. Kids. Smaller bar. Fewer tvs. Downstairs is a larger bar, pool table, shuffleboard table, many tvs, No kids. Yet the parents who want to bring kids downstairs get SOOOOOOO angry that they can't. Some parents are cool with it, but some are now boycotting the upstairs because downstairs is not a kid space. I don't get it.
  16. Some time, probably about 7 years ago (?), we were on the Isle on Man. So, we get off the ferry from Belfast fairly late, go to the inn, check in, and ask where there is to eat. (It was a long and rough crossing. The bar opened, but no food was available.) Douglas is fairly big, for the Isle of Man, as the major port is there. It's still a small place. So the innkeeper sends us down the street to his favorite place, which is the only place for dinner after about 10. It's an American Restaurant (yes, their capitalization). (He recommended "the gammon." Eventually I found out that a gammon is a ham steak.) Anyhow, it was sort of a western steakhouse. Every booth has the name of a US state on it. Well, except for the ones that have a US city name. And there are western dioramas all over the place, but the people in these little dioramas are fair folk. So the place looks like Ponderosa meets Darby O'Gill. The food was edible. We were hungry and thought it was only edible, so I bet it was pretty bad. The beer was VERY good. Neither of us remember the name any more. And it seems that this was before we had the digital camera. And we can't find anything about it on the net. But we both swear that it really happened. We have also seen an American restaurant in Madrid that specialized in Chicago hot dogs (right off the Plaza Mayor), and in Dublin with the Statue of Liberty as the logo and the oddest menu, featuring burgers and tacos. Oh, there were also Australian restaurants in Paris. Didn't go in, but I read the menu, got confused, and now I forget what they served.
  17. It's small, but they have lots of stuff and they will order stuff. And they are very nice folks. Oh, and before they opened, we used to regularly road trip to Frederick, because we love the Flying Barrel folks: http://www.flyingbarrel.com/
