  1. Huh. I have never had any of his sweet baked recipes come out well. I shall have to try this one. I usually use the cream cheese pastry recipe from Rose Levey Berenbaum And my favorite cherry pie is her recipe too
  2. I have that one - 27 years and still going.
  3. I think Land O Lakes is the best butter for baking in general.
  4. Their summer sausage is my favorite. And the smoked pork sandwich is good too. And while I live in Petworth, I am most likely to buy from them at the Columbia Heights farm market, since I am there most weeks. Very convenient.
  5. I agree. I bake, I cook. (The husband cooks, but only bakes bread.) I think baking improv is easy. He says every time he goes even a bit off the recipe when baking, bad things happen.
  6. Oh dear. Yes, I have been there only a few times. No, the food was nothing to write home about. But it was one of those places...
  7. My husband's friend D says this too. He is from CT. Was your dad from there? It seems to be a regional thing.
  8. I love this place, and have never thought to post about it. I used to love their truck. Now I periodically go down there for lunch with a friend who works in the neighborhood. Very tasty pizza.
  9. My mother always said that she wouldn't do that, as she once had her mouth washed out with soap and remember how awful it was. My parents would require you to define whatever cuss word you had just used and justify its usage. If you could, all was well. If not, you were off to your room to "think about what you said." (I note, it was DIFFICULT to justify cursing, especially to my mom.)
  10. Didn't there used to be something called that on King Street?
  11. Please tell me that you don't really mean this. I don't THINK I am a total outlier here, and I lived in Mt Pleasant and Adams Morgan in the late 80s. The boyfriend (now husband) lived at 15th and O. We bought in Petworth in 90.
  12. I am just grateful that they added onions a few years back. I NEED onions on my dogs.
  13. Wednesday night - went to a movie and then dinner for an anniversary celebration. The steak remains excellent. Nick was behind the bar, so the bar service was also excellent. We were too full for for dessert, but it looks like it remains as it was (and how I wish the vanilla cheesecake was still available.)
  14. Hey folks, I'm doing some organizing here. I have a menu from the Yen Ching Palace. We were planning to frame and hang it, but the design for the kitchen changed and so we never did. I have both a takeout paper menu and a real menu from the restaurant. If anyone here is interested, let me know. We can work out a way to get it to you. (I live in Petworth.)

    Hot Dogs

Meat sauce, Nance's, and chopped raw onions on a Zweigel's dog, either white or red, but definitely texas style.
  16. Anyone been recently? I've always been curious, and am planning to stop by one of these weeks. I haven't been since it was Petitio's, and we had our wedding rehearsal dinner in one of the upstairs dining rooms.
  17. I like the shakes. Specifically, I like the black and white shakes. I have a weakness for hot fudge sundaes, and the black and white shakes taste like hot fudge sundaes. (A serious weakness.) (My friends do not agree - they all want chocolate shakes, and these are not chocolate shakes. Anywhere else, I order chocolate shakes. Here, I drink black and whites.) I don't really like the food though.
