  1. There's the difference. I have never gone during summer - only spring and fall.
  2. I love Iceland Air. Keflavik is a nice airport, easy to navigate, the airplane staff are lovely, and I really appreciate a chance to get off the plane at that point. I HATE long flights. (OK, I hate to fly in general, but I like to go places, so I force myself onto planes.) See, we got a cheap fare to Paris, where we had never been, and it was on Iceland Air. It was lovely. And the airport transfer was easy. And I got to GET OFF THE PLANE before my brain melted. And the view from the airport was amazing. The next time we went to Paris, we added on a few days in Iceland (love that free stopover thing.) It was really cool, and I would like to do it again. If it is not TOO far out of the way, it's an easy connection, and if you have time, a stopover in Iceland is excellent.
  3. You can also get Atlas's 1500 at the Baseline Brew stands. It's very tasty and a dollar cheaper than the beer at District Drafts (which are also very nice).
  4. Apparently I am one of the few people in the neighborhood who is not surprised. I never liked the place, finding it too expensive for what it was, and finding the service slow and unfriendly. Then again, I haven't liked most of their places. Clearly a bad fit for my taste.
  5. So, I went for lunch. It was ok. And very strange. 2 of us for a late lunch on Tuesday, 2 weeks ago. There was no line, but they were clearly understaffed, as there were several tables available, but we had to wait, as did the few tables that came in after us. Then it took us a while to get water. Refills were also difficult, and it was a VERY hot day. The service was pleasant enough, but slow and a bit oddly pushy. At one point I asked about the milkshakes, but decided not to order one until dessert. This resulted in "You want to order that dessert now? How about now? How about now?" Dude, I’m barely a third of the way through my lunch! As I said, we had a late lunch. As we were leaving, they were putting up a sign that said they were closed until 5 (or maybe 5:30?). Food was REALLY slow to come out. Food was quite tasty, and fairly priced. I had a patty melt, and my friend had a club sandwich. Both worth eating, and very good fries.
  6. Went tonight, and I hated it. The chicken was dry and boring (not a surprise). But the salad was not good. The corn did not taste like it was sourced locally - very starchy. The hush puppies were dry and boring. The seafood eaters were not thrilled either. One friend had the shrimp poboy and was disappointed. Two others had crab cakes and found them ok, with lots of crab, but also seriously over salted (when my husband says something has too many capers, it has FAR too many capers.) Clearly, the thing here worth eating is the whole crabs. Also, the fries were REALLY REALLY good. So if that's what you want, go. Otherwise, I'd give it a pass. Oh, service was lovely, and there was no line at all.
  7. I have been to a number of their pop-ups and really enjoyed the food and the cider. The staff are great. Looking at the menu, we've eaten a number of the food items at pop-ups and really enjoyed them. All the food has always been well cooked. The only reason that I haven't like some things is because I don't like the ingredients (I don't eat seafood. My friends tell me that the octopus is great, but I'm not going to try that!) Can't wait to get here. As soon as I am off these crutches...
  8. Huh, the post bringing this to the top made me notice that David's name is still listed as chef here. He is long gone, replaced by his sous chef Francisco, um, what is his last name, Ah, here we go, Francisco Ferrufino. I love the beer and the staff. The food has always been fine but not amazing, IMO. And yes, I eat here a lot because I live really close and it is really convenient.
  9. He was selected. He chose not to participate. And I understand. I would certainly rather that he use his energy on Nats games than on the all-star game.
  10. I agree, I really have no reason to go there. But my husband and his best friend are seafood fiends, so if there's something I can eat, they won't feel guilty about going there, and they would love this place. I should have phrased it, "I would love to be able to go there." Oh, and we live about 4 blocks away, so they really do want to try it.
  11. She gave up on the W about 5 years ago. Nobody ever remembered it. I spent last Saturday at the farewell party. I was here before she opened. I am still here. And I miss her and that place where so many of my neighbors spent so much time together. What a loss for us all. Oh, Don, we came home with some of that aquavit....
  12. I like Afghan Grill, at Woodley Park - website I also like Lapis in Adams Morgan - website Also, Mama Ayesha's, between the two neighborhoods. - website If Zenebech is still open at that point, I love their food. Really pretty plain and divey space though. (Their building is getting torn down for development at some point.) - website I enjoy Masala Art (Have only been to the SW location, but the food is good, the happy hour is very good, and the service is very pleasant.) - website Zorba's at Dupont Circle is tasty - website I have enjoyed the Purple Patch in Mt Pleasant. Have not yet been to Bad Saint, despite it being closer to my house, because of the lines. - website
  13. Yes, and still going strong. I got a 3 foot sub from them for our Memorial Day get-together, and it was very delicious. While I was down here I had to do some other shopping (of course) and came home with some great stuff. And they have expanded their Saturday hours!
  14. Thin butter cookies - turn them into sandwich cookies! Or perhaps a small batch of mini cupcakes.
  15. There used to be a place on 18th Street in Adams Morgan that called themselves an Italian-Ethiopian restaurant. Good food. But I can't remember which of the many places that used to be there it was!
  16. Those went up in the 80s - the late 80s, I think. We were living at 15th and O in 1987, and they were very new then.
  17. It is. And she helped bring the new folks in the neighborhood around to the idea that there might be a place to eat in the neighborhood other than the Hitching Post (which most of the new folks were scared of). Kera also helped bring about the Petworth Farm Market, the Upshur Street Arts Fair, and much more. We did have some stuff other than the Hitching Post- some good carryouts. Otherwise, yes, it was up or down to other places (there wasn't much sideways.) But people coming in and investing in the neighborhood, well, that made a lot of us happy. And now....
  18. I have lived in Petworth for much longer than Domku has been here. I was SOOOOOO happy to see them arrive. I will be so so very sorry to see them leave. While the service has been a continual issue (better lately, but never perfect), I have always loved the food, and I have always loved Kera's fierce dedication to our neighborhood. This is a huge loss.
  19. I have this a great corkscrew. I can't figure out if it is made any more, but it is great. And it takes the cork out easily, all the way. It's a Henckle's that we bought probably 25+ years ago at the Henckle's Store in Georgetown Park. (So... not so helpful. But if you can find one, it will work!) It cost a LOT less when we bought it!
