  1. I dunno. As an "out" Baptist, I get a LOT of "you need to speak up against (Falwell, Roberts, Bakker, fill in the blank) and if you don't do it at equal volume to him/her/them, you don't get to say 'Not all Christians.'" (Please note - as a radical progressive Baptist of the Roger Williams type, I don't agree with any of them, but I really have no wish to engage with/about them either.)
  2. I have. I don't remember where I found it, but somewhere in DC. It's fine. Tasty root beer, although I prefer Abita root beer. But tastes just like regular root beer to me, and I was hoping for more complex.
  3. Park View, not Petworth. I haven't been since July, but they were going strong then. I'll look next time I go past (probably within a few days.) And it's an independent place - not related to other places.
  4. I also prefer sugar cones, but my weirdo husband prefers cake cones, although he calls them wafer cones. At home we eat ice cream in bowls, so no need to keep both cones in stock. As for the Orange Cow - once I got a graham cracker milkshake from them. It was delicious. But I don't work downtown any more, so I never am where they are. Also, I think it was a special, so maybe they wouldn't have it if I went.
  5. "Cooking with Jacques" made my husband interested in learning to cook. He's quite a good cook now.
  6. Once upon a time, when I lived in Adams Morgan (so, 1986 or so), this spot was called Las Rocas, and was a Salvadoran bar downstairs and a Mexican restaurant upstairs. The waiter we always got was a nice kid working his way through college (as were we!). There was decent food that we could afford on our minuscule budget. There was a fish tank, and on weekends, a guitar player who looked just like Manuel from "Fawlty Towers." And that's the last time I was inside that space.
  7. No, he left on his own. It was sad. (My favorite yoga studio used to be across the street, and moved for similar reasons. Several other businesses also left around the same time.) There was a series of crimes in the block, and very poor response from the police and from council member Bowser's office. It meant a ton of expenses for the businesses, and a lot less foot traffic, which was not all that high to begin with.
  8. "Sweet Mango is Dead, Long Live 3701 Jerk Station Opening Tuesday, For Now ... Development Slated To Come" on popville.com Oddly, another jerk place has opened there - today! Equally oddly, it appears to have different owners. Even more oddly, the lot is scheduled for development, supposedly soon.
  9. Have you been to Finger Lakes distilling yet?
  10. Wegman's has them. They also carry Hoffman's, which are an acceptable, although not as good, substitute. Zweigel's red hots are good too. And their mix for meat sauce, which is much harder to find outside of Rochester, is the very best.
  11. Went here for the first time in forever last Friday. The food was ok - those of us who got basic bar food said it met expectations. I got a cobb salad. The avocados were rocks. The bacon was limp. The blue cheese was clumped, as was the egg. The lettuce and dressing were good. The beer list was also only ok - too many hop bombs, but that's a common problem these days. Nobody got cocktails. The service was much improved from the last time I was there. The bartender was pleasant and efficient and I would be happy to sit at his bar again.
  12. Oddly, I just came back from having drinks at Petworth Citizen, where I ordered something called the "Airmail," which is described as "White Rum, Lime Juice, Honey, Champagne." It was tasty, and the honey was not clumpy. I bet they diluted it in the rum ahead of time.
  13. Last summer may have been my responsibility. We bought central a/c last spring.
  14. The coldest I remember is January 1985 - 2nd Reagan inauguration. So cold. The tidal basin froze solid enough that I walked across it on the ice. (No, really.)
  15. Yes, they do - and it's available at Yes! (which is walking distance to my house.) Although the stand at Union Market has MANY more flavors than the Yes! does. Also, the Yes carries Alden's ice cream, which I like a lot, especially the blackberry.
  16. And reporting back - it was fine. Neither great nor bad. Fine. The antipasto plate was quite nice. The wine was fine. The pizzas suffered from soggy middles. The calzone was large, and a bit runnier than preferred. As one friend said - it wasn't worth trekking to Georgtown for. We could have had a very similar meal at Red Rocks, within walking distance of home. So, while I wouldn't refuse to go back, I wouldn't choose to go back either.
  17. We went for the first time today - had a little trouble figuring out the doors, and did not realize there were 2 doors, one up, one down. But upstairs was nice, even though we tend to be more bar people. The server was pleasant, the hostess was working hard, and despite being surrounded by large parties, logistically all went well. We said introduced ourselves to Dean while he was out and around in the dining room. So he can't say "say hi next time!" because we did. Drinks were good - I'm SO glad that champagne cocktails seem to be making a comeback. I love them. So I had "Matteo is Thankful" (luxardo amaro abano, local cranberry syrup jerry thomas bitters, prosecco), while the husband had "The Ric Flair (old overholt rye, averna, luxardo sangue morlacco dolin rouge, jerry thomas and orange bitters) Good cocktails. Then I ate the benedict and he ate the risotto. Both good. But I should have sliced the second egg open right away. I always forget to do that, and my second egg always goes a bit past perfect from residual heat. The first one was perfect though! And he liked the risotto. Dessert were good, although I wish we had had enough time to sit to let them warm a bit. (Crema di Cioccolato and Cappucino di Nutella). We will have to go back, maybe for a happy hour, so that we can try a few more of the drinks. (Although I really will have a hard time resisting getting the same one again.)
  18. Anyone been here lately? An out of town friend and his out of town new girlfriend picked the place, and as we rarely get to Georgetown, we have never been.
  19. Once upon a time, it was a good bakery. In the late 80s, we lived in the neighborhood. When we got married in 1988, our very good cake came from there. (Rehearsal dinner at Petitio's. Tuxes from Woodies. Cake from Hellers. Well, at least the florist who did our wedding still exists.)
  20. Have you eaten at the bar at Corduroy? The restaurant is great, and the bar deal is astounding, I think as astounding as the CityZen deal. Don't miss it!
