  1. I looked at that earlier - it would be perfect, if it would serve their address. Thank you though.
  2. Hey folks - I'm looking for a place that ISN'T fast food that will delivery to SE DC. One of our church members has recently had a baby, and we'd like to send them a few meals. (3 Fridays in a row, food for 2 people.) I need to be able to pay in advance with a credit card and can either set it up so that they order, or I order. Any thoughts? They are omnivores.
  3. I believe you are missing a preposition. "Buying FROM Amazon" vs. "Buying Amazon." (All I can think is, "AHA! Pronoun trouble!" Yes, I know, pronouns are not the same thing as prepositions.)
  4. Which does save money, but.... I care when my food comes from. I care that any animal I eat was humanely raised. I care that my vegetables and fruit don't destroy the world. It does mean paying more for food, but I think Farmer John is right - location and what the market will bear increase the costs a lot more than food sourcing does.
  5. I like the ambiance there! And the faux ribeye is quite nice.
  6. When Brian owned it, it was music every night at 9 PM. Now it is one night a week at 10 PM.
  7. I live in Petworth. Have for 27 years now. We used to go to CP for dinner, drinks, etc. There was nothing over here, and it was easily metro accessible on Fridays after work for a bunch of us coming from various places. In the last 15 years, it has become possible to hang out here in the neighborhood for dinner, drinks, etc. And then, we can walk home! The final reasons we aren't in CP very much at all any more: Nanny's changed hands and the music is gone. Sorriso is gone. So is Aroma. The Uptown doesn't really get the best movies any more. A lot of us work from home on Fridays now, so we are coming from home when we go out - nice to be able to stay close! The reason we still go there some times: VACE! --- Nanny O'Briens (Tweaked)
  8. Depends on where it is. Some churches have huge parking lots, some have only street parking.
  9. We live fairly close, and 4 of us find ourselves there semi-regularly. And yes, the staff are pleasant, but not always able to keep up. The food is good, the happy hour is a great value and we are really enjoying working our way through a wine list full of unfamiliar wines.
  10. The line at Bad Saint is usually well into the second seating long before that.
  11. There used to be a cheesecake at Ray's the Classics - it was called vanilla bean cheesecake. It was soooo good. But then the person who had been making them went back to her day job. I don't remember much about the name now - think it involved the word "oven." I wish I could still get that cheesecake. Failing that, I wish I had the recipe.
  12. I've been once, and also like it very much. (Disclaimer - I know and like some of the folks involved.)
  13. Oh, good lord, no. Howard Stern is FAR too vulgar for me. Letterman and slapstick - velcro suit. Alka-seltzer suit. Chris Elliot as a regular contributor. (I love Chris Elliot. I was a big fan of "Get a Life!" That's my Dad's fault though. He is a big Bob and Ray fan.) Throwing stuff off the roof. There was plenty of it. And yes, Albert Brooks can act. But I appreciate him for his sideways view of the world.
  14. I was a Letterman fan, and love Colbert. Loved Carson, could not STAND Leno. Can't stand Fallon. Kimmel is ok. And yes, absurdist is exact the right way to describe it. I am also a huge fan of Albert Brooks, and see many similarities.
  15. I used to think I didn't like Otis Redding. Then we went to Memphis, and in the Stax gift shop, my husband (who should never be allowed unsupervised in a record store while in possession of his credit cards) bought some Otis recordings. I like everything except the very overplayed "Dock of the Bay." (I also learned who Carla Thomas is from that trip. Now I like her too.)
  16. There are still some cut-off places. Although, seems likely to be correct. 2 of my grandparents (Dad's side) were born in the 1800s. They both died in the 80s. My great-aunt (Mom's side), who was a grandmother figure to me (my grandmother, her younger sister, died very young.) was also born in the 1800s, and also died in the 80s. I found their stories fascinating. I'm glad I got to know them.
  17. Huh. So I just went back and looked at it. The article does not have Potbelly's anymore. It's Potbelly now.
  18. It's not just Potbelly. It's all stores. Stores are all possessive. I always thought it was a western NY thing and I have some Czech friends who make stores possessive too. So... maybe it's a central European thing? But I've heard people who don't fit either of those categories do it, so I've decided it's just an oddity that a lot of us do.
  19. Hm. The fried chicken and the BLT were both quite tasty. The baba ghanouj fritter comes highly recommended, but only 2 of us will eat it, so we didn't get that. The hush puppies were quite good - my husband the hush puppy hater didn't like them, but the rest of us did, even the one who is very picky about hush puppies. The chips and dip were excellent. The shrub cocktails were excellent. The beer list is good, but short. We very much want to try out the punch. That's next time.
  20. So, they opened last week, Tuesday. We stopped in on Friday. 4 of us. Short menu. So we managed to try much of the drink menu, the beer list, and the food menu. It was good. Food was tasty, drinks were good, and service was nice. We were especially impressed that it was not a mess in opening week. And we all love what they have done to the space. Now let me admit to bias. We've been customers since I used to go to the Porc truck, and all of us who went together live in the neighborhood and enjoy having food and drink walkable. We like all the partners in the place. Still, I think we can tell good food from bad. And it was good.
  21. I have "gelato by lello" and love it, although I have had it for so many years now that I am sure there is a new model out. We use it regularly. It does take up space, and was a big investment, but we use it a LOT more than we would use one that required freezer space. Oh, and my favorite ice cream recipe book is "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz. He has a (now dated, but still useful) post about ice cream makers here.
  22. But they will be re-opening (soon) as "The Good Silver." No more BBQ, but I like what I have heard of the plans. I miss KBC though.
  23. It's been several years since I was in Prague. However, a friend who is from there and still visits regularly provided some advice last December for another friend who was visiting Prague. It's a fairly long document. I don't know if I should post 2 pages here, or email it to you. Are you looking for general food advice or tourism advice too?
