  1. So is Toki's basic broth an evolving entity? My first visit in September 2011 was very memorable. I read this Washingtonian article soon thereafter and became concerned that the soup I loved would be changing. I based my concern mostly on these two sentences: I went back for the first time last week. The broth had indeed changed. I've attached pics from both visits. It was still very, very good, but I felt it wasn't quite the same. You can even see that the September version looks a little richer. Before the soup came out, I asked the server if they tweak the broth at all. He said he wasn't sure, but didn't believe there was anything in there that would be seasonal. I guess I'll have to wait until peach season to see if they go back to an old formula or adjust it yet again. My confidence in convincing first-timers to come with me drops a little if I'm not sure which version they'll get.
  2. This is getting away from the seriousness of the above posts, but I just read an article in Israel's Haaretz newspaper with an unfortunate graphic that reminded me of the Fojol discussion. Take a look: This recent conversation has made me think that there's a distinction between what's racist and what's inappropriate when it comes to other groups of people. Both this graphic and the Fojols probably fall into different degrees of the latter category. Based on what I've seen from the Fojols and their seemingly diverse staff, I have trouble believing they hold (as Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines it) "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race."
  3. Before I forget it again, I wanted to post a picture from my visit there about a month and a half ago. The meal was a very positive experience overall, but the standout for me was the smoked haddock and shellfish chowder, on the menu now for $16. This is an outstanding soup, and pretty affordable, given how full of seafood it is. And every piece of that seafood was cooked perfectly.
  4. I may have been a little hasty in my last post. Driving by tonight, they were not open, but it looks like they're getting ready to. (on my last walk by, the lights were on full and many people were inside, so I assumed they were back in business.)
  5. I arrived last night (Friday) just before 7 p.m. and was given a 45-minute wait time for a party of two. We decided to check out the upstairs bar, which was very crowded. But upon our return downstairs, a few parties were wrapping things up at the bar, so we snagged two seats. Several other parties did this as the night went on, too. The downstairs bar service was excellent. The mussels and fries were great, too. My only complaint was that the dipping sauces for the fries didn't have that much kick. Both the truffle mayo and horseradish cream barely had hints of their signature ingredient.
  6. Wow, over two years without a comment. (But I'm just asking a question, so I won't break the record.) If one were to show up here on a Friday evening, by what time should one arrive before things get so crowded that there'd be a long (say 30 mins or more) wait for a table for two or two seats at the bar? Or is crowding not a problem any more now that there are many other good options on H Street?
  7. No, but I did try the chicken and waffles, mini dogs, crispy oysters, cuptails, and delecta bun, all of which were superb. I need to eat at the bar more.
  8. I know we're only 30 days in, but PS7's lobster hash is the tastiest thing I've eaten this year. Ingredients: lobster (both on top and in the hash), sunchokes, a fried quail egg, pearl onions, and rosemary hollandaise.
  9. Is this going to continue? This DCist article says that Senor Chicken is done indefinitely, so does that mean they'll continue serving ramen Monday through Saturday?
  10. Ok, I had a similar experience in the middle of September but didn't know if it was a fluke. This was my first time having a full meal at the CP location. The whole meal was a major step down in quality from the last time I had been to the Georgetown location, especially the clam chowder. I had it on my first visit to the Georgetown location almost three years ago now, and remembered it as one of the best renditions I've had. The one at CP was a gloppy mess, and I even found a few glops of some kind of thickening agent. The Georgetown one I'd had previously was very thin but still great. And the beet/goat cheese salad was mostly bland beets with very little cheese. The potato salad had some flavors I couldn't even identify. Most of the hot items were only warm by the time they got to our table, too.
  11. In addition to the hell chicken, is the regular fried chicken the same as they were serving at the East River location? (ie, smoked then fried?)
  12. Any recent reports or recommendations in Boston? I'll be there from the 17th to the 22nd, staying near the Hynes Convention Center. High and low end suggestions welcomed! And I'll need something that's open on Monday night, too. Looks like Craigie and Hungry Mother are closed.
  13. Stopped in last Saturday for brunch for what I think was my fourth visit to the place. The autumn rolls, while of great quality as always, came out barely warm. However, their newest Banh Mi, the catfish, was outstanding. Best sandwich I've had in ages. The Bloody Kenny is excellent, too. It's the perfect Bloody Mary type drink for someone like me who doesn't like emphasis on the tomato juice.
  14. So are any bottled orange juices on the market absolutely fresh?
  15. I also tried the oysters and was very happy with the dish -- and with my first-ever helping of Ray's fried shrimp. Interesting. Any word on whether he influenced this version of the crab royale? I noticed the menu described it as "Fresh Jumbo Lump Crab, Lightly Seasoned and Broiled," where as Ray's the Steaks menu says, "Fresh Jumbo Lump Crab, Broiled and Finished with a Sherry-Shallot Butter." (Which also leads me to ask if that makes it any different from Ray's the Classics' "Jumbo Lump Crabmeat, Seasoned, Broiled and Finished with a Sherry-Shallot Beurre Blanc" or East River's "Over a Half-Pound of Pure, Fresh Jumbo Lump Crab Lightly Seasoned and Broiled.") It's possible I left before you arrived... I had the distinction of being in the first party seated in the dining room on opening day.
  16. Ray's To The Third. Steak frites seems to be the emphasis here. This Ray's also has a six-seat bar and serves fried chicken. I've attached the opening night food menu. (I think I missed a listing of milkshakes on the back of one panel, which are curently the only sweets available.) I won't comment on the opening night food other than say that the catfish was the best I've ever had. The prices are on par with what you'd expect.
  17. So who is the heir to the Bobby's throne? That is, who is serving crabcakes that are very similar to those that were served at Bobby's? And I can't help but notice that Chris Willis is back on the scene at Grist Mill, yet no one's made any comments here or in the restaurant's thread. Is it worth a trip? What I'm looking for here is a dish that is pretty much all jumbo lump crab, like the old Bobby's Crabcakes or even the crab royale at Ray's.
  18. Red Rocks rocked. What could have easily been a disaster turned into a major success. Route 95 was very backed up yesterday, causing my guests to be almost two hours late. So it's a good thing I didn't have reservations anywhere. We walked into Red Rocks at about 7:50 and I very humbly asked if they could seat a party of 11. Not only could they seat us, but they had availability in their upper room immediately. There was only one other party up there, and they left very shortly after we arrived. So basically we had a private room to ourselves. This was fortunate because due to the later-than-expected dining time, some of the youngsters went into semi-meltdown mode for a brief period. It also ended up being fun for the kids because of the openings in the wall that offer a direct view of the oven and pizza-making process. Furthermore, everyone (including the children) gave very favorable comments about the food. Thanks again to all who offered advice this past week.
  19. St. Arnold's could fit the bill; Heritage India also has drnk specials and discounted Indian street food. Cafe Citron may have specials but their website is under construction. It looks like Firefly has finally extended their happy hour times from 4 to 7, but the website doesn't say what the specials are. Ping Pong Dim Sum should be opening soon; if the specials there are the same as the Chinatown location, it'll be a great happy hour, provided it's not a mob scene (as is the case with Pizzeria Paradiso). Mezza Luna seems to have good offerings, too, but I know nothing about the place otherwise.
  20. Interesting. Is that the general consensus here, that Paradiso would be a better choice than Red Rocks? I don't know what their space is like, but showing up with a large party on the early side at Paradiso could be as successful as trying it at Red Rocks. The latter is walking distance from their hotel, but we could always take the King Street trolley.
  21. It looks like we are going to attempt to go the Red Rocks route. (Although I might give thought to reconsidering if a lot people chimed in that the quality of food there was vastly inferior to Overwood.) And should the need arise, who's serving the best ice cream in Old Town these days? Boccato Gelato? (I've never been.) Seems like every flyer they're handing out down there has a buy one get one free coupon for Ben & Jerry's. Thanks for everyone's advice on this matter.
  22. Thanks. I'm probably leaning away from Columbia Firehouse now (although I hadn't even called to see if they could take us), based on ktmoomau's post talking about how they have to give you a smaller menu with large parties. Red Rocks is now a leading contender -- I spoke to a friendly gentleman on the phone who informed me that although they don't take reservations on Fridays and Saturdays, they could probably accomodate a walk-in party of that size with minimal wait if we came before 7.
