  1. Can we lay out the exact rules for reservations? As stated above, reservations are accepted for a small number of tables, right? Is the phone-ahead wait list just a phone version of the system that was previously in place? (That is, where you could go in and put your name down for any open spot that evening?) If this is the case, what time can one start calling? And congrats on the new opening. I have no hesitation in using the word "beloved" when referring to the Ray's empire.

  3. OK, some pictures from last night's meal. In order: 1: The assortment of panchan they brought to the table. 2: The pork bellies, with the kimchee and other items that come with the dish. 3: The cooking of the chul pan. 4: The rice being added the chul pan. 5: The final fried rice product.
  4. OK, I'm happy to report a very enjoyable experience tonight at the Honey Pig. Short summary: Perhaps owing to a bit of luck, we got everything we wanted, including the fried rice -- filling two people at a cost of $20 per person with generous tip. Long summary: There was a long line to be seated, but it moved pretty quickly. They brought water out to start. We didn't get any bori-cha. We didn't ask for any, either, since we both ordered other drinks. As soon as we were handed menus, the waitress (first of several) wanted to know our order. She could tell we needed guidance, so she recommended a pork and a beef. We said "what about fried rice?" and she then pointed down to the chul pan section of the menu (which exists on the printed version). She was also able to communicate to us that two dishes would be plenty of food. So we ordered the #1 seng pork bellies (grilled sliced black pork belly) and the #11 bul nac chul pan (bul go ki, octopus, and fresh vegetable with special spicy sauce). Immediately thereafter, they brought out the panchan. This was soon followed by kimchee placed on the grill, which served as the accompaniment to the pork belly. We again asked if we would get fried rice, which caused a look of confusion on our server's face. Once that course was polished off, they switched the grills for the chul pan. I think I figured out the mystery of the fried rice: It is made possible by ordering any of the chul pans. After you work at it a while, you indicate to them that it's rice time, and they bring over some rice and extra veggies to stir in. After actually going through with the meal, I feel I have a much better handle on things now. The menu can be funny in that everything is marked as "on sale." All they do is put some inflated fake price just so they can cross it off and put the real price.
  5. Maybe I could better phrase the question as: When you order chul pan, what comes with it? Does ordering it imply that they're gonna throw some fried rice on the grill when you're halfway done with the meat, or something else?
  6. Thanks for the reply! Still one question -- do I order the "chul pan" at the beginning, or just order meats as normal and then halfway through ask for the fried rice? Cheers.
  7. Hi all, Headed here tonight, and I think I am a little intimidated. By going to the English version of their website, http://welcome.bz/serv/red/home.asp?blobid=8, the only item I am sure about ordering is the #1, black pork bellies. The numbers skip from 8 to 21, and there's no mention of any chul pan dishes, except for a few images on the website. Also, how does the chul pan work? Are you supposed to intentionally leave stuff on the grill for them to make it with? Sincerely, Scared in DC
  8. Finally made it to Komi and the Old Ebbitt Oyster Riot in 2008. Both super expensive, but super worth it. Perhaps the most welcome development that everone can enjoy was the opening of Ray's Hell Burger. And I got to partake in a fantastic opening night there thanks to the heads up on this website.
  9. According to a response to a question submitted to their website, they are not going to open the DC location until May 2010 now!
  10. Here is their link to info about the head bar guy: http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/index....tent/article/10 From what I understand, they make all their own sodas, juices, and mixers every day. Here is the cocktail menu: http://www.wearefoundingfarmers.com/menus/FF_BarMenu.pdf I tried the Dark & Stormy, the Farmer's Fizz, and the Constitution. The latter was one of the smoothest drinks I've ever had. They also do a flight of different types of absinthe.
  11. I found comfort in the bacon wrapped dates (stuffed with bleu cheese and covered with a balsamic glaze) and the specialty cocktails.

  13. The Post has pulled Tom's "First Bite" write up of Commissary: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...8110101976.html The EatWell DC group sent out a letter this morning to its listserv members with their take on the situation, blasting Tom for lack of judgment regarding this conflict of interest.
  14. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought it was supposed to become a meat-and-three place?
  15. Click Does Nycci post/read here?
  16. Someone asked me if I knew of any good Dominican places in the area. To be honest, I'm not sure if I've even heard one conversation about a Dominican place in the 9 years I've lived here. Any thoughts?
  17. This will be my first year attending. The monetary value of their happy hour is certainly greater (even with alcohol factored in), but I have to do this. To me, it'll be like being a kid in a candy store. There's definitely something to be said for strolling around and scarfing oysters to your heart's content. Plus, the Riot has the benefit of offering four times the variety of their normal menu. Besides, I've already got my outfit prepared.
  18. Had a disappointing experience at GSE this afternoon. Specifically, I didn't get any food. They are closed from 3:30 to 5:30 every day, at least for the summer. This isn't mentioned on their printed menus or outside the shop, but I have now found mention of it on their website. I strolled in at 4:30. Yes, strolled in, because the door was unlocked. No one seemed to care as I stood there perusing* the menu, until I tried to order. Maybe I'll go back someday. *Real perusing, meaning reading thoroughly. I was in there at least 3-4 minutes before attempting to order.
  19. I got one of the last four cupcakes. They ran out precisely at closing time, 7 p.m. During the 30 minutes I hung around there, the line of 40-deep people consisted almost entirely of women the exact same age and height. Weird. All they had left for me was the triple coconut. I'm not a member of the coconut fan club, but I will say the cake was pretty moist. I do not subscribe to the recent cupcake mania, but I would be willing to go back and try other flavors. The owners told us the moved 2800 cupcakes on the first day. Nicely done.
  20. Hit the Hell Burger on two consecutive days this weekend. It actually seemed more crowded on Sunday evening than on Saturday. After hearing talk of how the cooked throughout burgers are just as juicy as the recommended, I tried the former. I have to say that from now on, the highest I'll go is medium, since with cooked throughout, you run the slight risk of getting one that's overcooked, which is what happened to mine. (The opposite is almost true with the recommended, too.) But that's the only thing remotely negative I have to say after four visits there. Ray's forever! And now an item for discussion: If one were to get the epoisses cheese, what else should you get on the burger? I wouldn't want to drown out the taste of the cheese if I'm gonna throw out the $$ for it.
  21. After walking by a few times, I saw this on the Zagat website today: http://www.zagat.com/Blog/Detail.aspx?SNP=...amp;BLGID=14038 Anyone know any more details, like who's running the joint?
  22. So according to the website, Komi will be closed from August 24- September 23? Unfortunate for me, since my plan was to forego Restaurant Week meals and spend my money there instead! Let's hope I can hold onto it for another month.
  23. When I took my parents back to BWI after their July 4th visit, we stopped at the Urban BBQ in Hillandale along the way. It's right off the New Hampshire Avenue (north) exit of the Beltway.
  24. Saw this on the Washingtonian's website (http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/restaurants/bestbites/8804.html): Mendocino and Tosca (usually RW's best values) are booked solid. But there are still spots open for Circle Bistro. Can anyone confirm they are, in fact, offering the full menu? I know they have not in years past. If they did, this would be another fantastic value.
