  1. Not to pick on the typo... but in our wonderful town it's amazing how just one little letter in an acronym makes a big difference. So if NEA=NSA, and NEA="terrorist organization" , then NSA="terrorist organization"?!?!
  2. I was here on Monday to watch the Caps/Flyers game before heading to 930 Club with a couple friends. Still not all that discovered yet... which I like. They had the primary sound on for the Wizards shellacking... but they offered to put me in the corner by the window with one of the smaller TVs and turned on that sound for me... which was very cool. Couple Hoegaarden drafts, and 4 caps goals made for a good evening (too bad it was short-circuited the next night; ok Koharski, would you care to explain why that's not goalie interference, or would you just like another donut?). Mushroom/swiss burger was decent, but nothing special... ditto fries. It was a bit strange to be in a "sports bar" and to be the only one screaming when the Caps scored. The upstairs was closed. But I'll come back to check it out sometime.
  3. I was at Del Friscos a couple years ago and it is well priced compared to some places on the strip. One of the better steaks I've had in Las Vegas and the service is excellent... it's not flashy, but you'll get a good meal at a good price point. I'm there this Saturday for a bachelor party and will provide an update. I've heard they got rid of their cigar lounge though, which doesn't make me all that unhappy, but displeases several in the party including the groom-to-be.
  4. Walking by today, and a sign outside the place says Valet Parking $22
  5. Last Wednesday dinner - Kinkead's for the gf's b-day dinner. With all the new places opening up, sometimes a place like Kinkead's gets forgotten for a good solid piece of fish... and while not simply prepared, a place they know not to overwhelm the natural tastiness of its ingredients. And the always good service. When faced with the dessert choice... go with the lemon trio over the apple tart. Thursday lunch - Quiznos across from work Friday dinner - late dinner after the Caps game at Stoney's, steak and cheese sandwich and a Stoney's amber to wash it down. just what I needed about that time. Sat dinner - Merkado, skirt steak with asparagus and plantains. I never get wowed by any of the dishes here, but I can say I've never had a bad meal... and I like the mojitos. Sun brunch - Cheesecake Factory/Clarendon. After a failed attempt to seat 12 of us at Whitlow's. Unbelievably only a 15 minute wait at the factory. French toast with a side of bacon. nothing special. it was more important to have a place where the gf's family could all get together. Sun dinner - Bob's 88. my first time here. soup dumplings were disappointing. shabu shabu as expected. lion's head...omg, this is the best dish I've had in a while. i'll need to write more about this dinner in the bob's thread.
  6. Was here on Saturday night with a couple friends before the Hives show at 930 Club. It's definitely a nice space. While there was a 30 minute wait for a table ~815pm, we were able to wander up to the second floor and grab a couch in the front lounge area by the windows. I don't know why the comfy couch was empty... the bars were pretty full, but none of them felt like wandering over to sit on the couch. And they served us food there. Food was good (btn the 3 of us, there was the turkey melt, the steak and cheese, and the chicken panino) but nothing that makes you go wow (or hmm). The service was very attentive, moving around tables for us and such to make it easier for us to eat on the couch. Hoegaarden on draft. I agree with Rhone, not a destination place, but if you're in the area (which I am quite a bit), it's a great addition to the neighborhood... there aren't many places right on U Street doing this type of food... good pre-show place. Maybe even post-show.. noticed something on the web page about a late night menu with $5 after 11pm.... would also like to try brunch.
  7. I've always like Galway Bay... it started out as the place with good shepards pie (with Castle Bay being the one with good fish and chips)... but I think this place has the best food of the Irish bars in Annapolis now overall. Pub quiz on Tuesdays is fun. I'm lucky to make it to Galway Bay once a year now that I live in the District. The most amazing thing about this place is the hostess (whose name I'm kicking myself for not remembering) has been there since the early days (if not the first day) of Galway Bay's predecessor, Little Campus Inn... some 40 years of working in the same place.
  8. Was here on Wednesday night... was able to snag a table w/o a wait at 7ish. Friend and I each had the sparking flight and I had the cab franc flight and she had the grenache flight. Shared the fries, sunchokes, and 3 cheeses. She also had mesculan salad, and I had the brioche sandwich. Everything was tasty and the place was packed by about 730 or 8. Only gripe was how long things took... particularly during the crunch.... I like not being rushed... but it took about 15-20 minutes for someone to take our order, and then another 20 minutes before we got our first flight. When all was said and done, we were there about 2.5-3 hours. And with the popularity, I'd think they'd want to turn the tables over a bit quicker. I'm sure those things will get ironed out though (it's got to be tough to get plates, glasses through the bar crowd to the tables on the left as you walk into the place). Definitely a great addition to the neighborhood.... prices are reasonable, and I hope to make it a regular place.
  9. Busboys and Poets comes to mind... check out vegdc though.
  10. yes, the proper way to eat soup dumplings is to use your chopsticks to pick them up and put them in one of the soup spoons. while in the soup spoon, you can add ginger and whatever other spices/sauces meet your fancy... then take a little bite, suck/slurp up the soup in the dumpling and then proceed to eat the rest of the dumpling.... of course the order of sucking and eating is at your discretion.... You should not be able to just pop the whole thing into your mouth... that's a recipe for a burnt tongue if the dumplings are well made. What makes these tricky to make is the dumping skin.. they need to be thick enough to withstand the steaming process w/o breaking (which also means properly tying the dumplings also), and the skillful should also be able to use chopsticks to pick them up without them breaking also. If you don't get the soup effect when you bite, they're just plain old dumplings... still potentially tasty... but just not the same. I have to try Bob's.... but I haven't found any in this area that compete w/ Joe's Shanghai in NYC yet.
  11. Web site is up now. Though not much info besides the opening night and the hours/contact info.
  12. I did RW here tonight. Pretty full house. GF and I had the chopped salad and risotto to start. The risotto was ok... the tuna sliders were probably the way to go.. I saw several folks get them. I really couldn't taste the clams at all... the chorizo added some good flavor to the risotto. GF loved her chopped salad. Bacon rolls that came out with the apps were also tasty. Two changes to the entree menu that's posted on their web site.... petite filets instead of hanger steak; and pork tenderloin (at least I think it was tenderloin) instead of veal. We got the salmon and the chicken and also split an order of the haricot verts. I think the salmon was the winner here.. better flavor. Chicken was decent, but nothing special. Desserts... I'd go with the apple crisp... the beignets were good, but were served with with chocolate and currant sauces dribbled on the plate... I think little dipping bowls for the beignets would've been better. Service was decent, given the harried conditions of RW... I'd never been to PS7 before and I think this is a case where RW did it's job... it got me in for a try, and I'm likely to come back. edited to add: though not reflected on their web site, my credit card receipt states they're extending RW through next Saturday.
  13. For blue state people... Busboys and Poets would probably be a good spot.
  14. I was there last Thursday for the first time... was told the heat went out on Wednesday; the repair guy no-showed on Thursday. I hope it's fixed by now. Bar was pretty busy about 7pm, but the dining room only had a few tables full... though I imagine the heat problem could have had something to do with that also. My friend and I each had a glass of wine... wide selection, though to my untrained eye, it didn't seem like much jumped out at me. I had the vinoteca panini - it was a fine ham and cheese sandwich, but nothing special, though I did like the addition of the apples to the sandwich. Came with a small side salad. My friend who's a vegetarian was actually pretty impressed with the selection, but she's used to having very few options. She seemed pleased with the butternut squash soup and house salad. I didn't sample. We didn't have the service problems JLK mentions, but was probably hoping for some more help navigating the wine... an oddity was having the single serving carafes served with the wine, but then not having it poured in the glass for us. Like JLK, I want to like it, mostly because it's close to home... I'll go again and hope for the heat to be on. On the other hand, Cork will be even closer to home... and I'm looking forward to trying that too.
  15. Usually the ground pork is cooked in a broth with soy sauce flavored with ginger, sugar, green onions, and sometimes 5-spice powder. Shelled hard boiled eggs are added to the dish and boiled for hours. It's a common homestyle dish... each time the dish is reheated, the flavor should permeate into the egg more. yummy....
  16. Tabard Inn is cozy and has a fireplace in the lounge.
  17. So work takes me to Sarasota for the two weeks after Thanksgiving... does anyone have some dinner suggestions? nothing too expensive (i.e. entrees <$25).
  18. In the neighborhood, also check out the Grand Slam Sports Bar in the Grand Hyatt... they've pulled up some obscure channels for us to show college hockey for our alumni group. It may be worth checking Green Turtle also...
  19. I was there for the first time on Saturday night too... before going to Black Cat. I have to agree with SCinDC's about the slow service.. we were probably seated about the same time... and were only a bit more fortunate to get our food about 9pm... probably aided by the fact most of us got drinks at the bar before proceeding to the table. The most odd thing was that 3 people got their food first (the salmon dishes and the steak), and then about 8 minutes later, the two roast chicken dishes and a veggie dish show up. The last did not show up until some prompting... and she ordered two apps for dinner (grilled calamari and the simple salad). So the dinner entrees showed up over a 15-20 minute period. We finally prodded the folks that got their dishes first to eat lest it get cold... though apparently the salmon had been sitting out a while. The salmon folks declared the salmon itself good... but everything else about the dish not so much. The roast BBQ chicken was tasty... me and the other person that got it were quite pleased... it's not necessarily that it has a "wow" factor... but it was well done dish... half a chicken served on grilled peppers and onions... served with a nice dallop of potato salad and grilled corn on the cob. and at $15 I think a good value. The space really is very nice though the split bars up front is a bit odd. I'll go again... I'd like to try the brunch... it probably won't be a place in the regular rotation... but I think it's a nice addition to the neighborhood. Hopefully they can get their service times down... I didn't pay enough attention to see if it was a lack of wait staff problem... or maybe a kitchen backup problem. I'm sure (hope?) there will be some menu tweaking also as they figure out what works and what doesn't....
  20. Golden Palace used to be on 7th Street as was Eat First before it closed... and then reopened on H St.
  21. Java Green (link) I haven't been... so I can't vouch... but it fits your description.
  22. Circle Bistro on Tuesday.... I and the gf had been before, but the others in the party had not. Food, as always, excellent (loved the corn soup). The regular, full menu was used... about half the entrees had $3-$4 upcharges... a couple of the starters (softshell crab) had upcharges also. The one odd thing that irked me a bit was that the automatic gratuity was more than 20% (about 21.5%) on the pretax total. We probably would've left that much anyway with it being RW and all, so didn't fuss... but it is just the first time I've seen the automatic gratuity be over 20%.
  23. for 'local' brews, you could go 5-6 blocks to the Convention Center and Old Dominion Brew House. might not be a lot of vegetarian options though. otherwise Saint-Ex has a very good beer selection also (click).
