  1. was at Hong Kong Palace on Monday. Definitely not as busy as on New Year's Day. The side room was closed and the room was maybe a third full around 1230p, so it also seems to not be as busy as a weekend. They advertise that they do push cart 7 days a week. The variety on Monday seemed to be about the same as it was on New Year's. I do need to go back to Mark's and a couple of the other places to compare, but HKP is definitely solid. Genevieve - among the non-pork options, besides the usual shrimp-based options are veggie noodles, singapore rice noodles, braised octopus and fried squid... the string beans at HKP are particularly tasty.
  2. I was at Hong Kong Pearl for the first time on New Years for dim sum and it was very good. It has been years since I've been to Fortune, but it had gone downhill based on that visit. China Garden is ok. Planning to go back to Hong Kong Pearl soon to verify first impressions. It had enough non-shrimp, non-pork for Mrs. rbh to eat so that's always a plus also.
  3. We have routinely gotten birthday cakes from Pastries by Randolph. raspberry and lemon fillings in particular have been very tasty. Ms. RBH loves the dark chocolate mousse cake for her b-day.
  4. So we went to the one in Baltimore for lunch before a trip to Port Discovery. We also got the whole chicken family meal. Sides of black beans and fried rice. The chicken is definitely smaller than Crisp and Juicy (Arlington). When we get the whole chicken there, usually about a third of the chicken is left. At Chicken Rico, we went through the whole thing. The chicken, while flavorful, I found to be a bit too much on the salty side for me. The fried rice was much better when mixed with the black beans. It was good for what we needed at the time.... something kid-friendly and quick in the right location for us. I was a bit intrigued by a couple of the stirfry things on the menu. If we go to Port Discovery again, we'd certainly consider going back, but it's not a place we're ever going to crave, particulary when we live just a couple miles from Crisp and Juicy.
  5. When I was there with a group a few weeks ago, when I asked which chicken to get, the wait staff immediately said the ginger scallion chicken..... the flavor is much better than the soy sauce chicken and they were absolutely right. One of the usual dishes I get at Cantonese places is the seafood tofu casserole.... which didn't disappoint here. The fried tofu with vegetables was also tasty as was the har mon vermicelli noodles (like the chow fun that Don described.... not greasy at all). The one stinker in the lot was the sizzling scallops in black pepper sauce. the scallops were a little overcooked and then the suace just made them rather goopy.
  6. thinking of places you may not need to book way ahead. I've always like Mio. It's been ages since I've been there, but 1789 is another option. Blue Duck Tavern if on the outside chance you can get a reservation, Poste is another place I haven't had dinner in a while, but the courtyard lounge/bar is a nice place to have a drink during these comfortable evenings.
  7. we were there last weekend too. I will be nowhere near as eloquent as pool boy or darkstar. But overall, it was outstanding. So the pricing for the dover sole is for an appetizer portion. We got both this and the gnocchi to start and had the chicken and the tuna for mains. The dover sole was excellent... just one of those dishes where the preparation on each of the ingredients would even just be good on its own and then when you put it all together, it hits that surreal level. I can't add anything beyond what has been said about the gnocchi. I never had the chicken at Palena, but if the Grill Room version is that, I definitely missed out at Palena especially when it was at a significantly lower price point. the flavor.... the juiciness. Bottle of sancerre.... want to say about $70. Danielle was our server.... her descriptions of the dishes literally made our mouths water. We wanted her to describe a couple other dishes just to hear her delivery. As the others have said, it is definitely a very nice space with extremely comfortable chairs. A little loud in the room when full, but good spacing on the tables so you don't feel like you're hearing the next table's conversations. a little disappointed to have missed out on the tasting menu by a week now though
  8. A couple weeks ago, our annual winter getaway took us to Miami this year. With two toddlers in tow, fine dining is rarely an option. And often on vacation these days, after a day of activities, take-out is often a preferable option. And we had to have some Cuban food while we were down there.... which brings me to El Palacio de los Jugos and specifically the Flagler Street location. Wow... absolute lifesaver for the trip. Yes, it's pre-prepared hot food that you order over the counter.... the seating available is just picnic tables.... don't let the looks deceive you. Separate counters for seafood, meats, juices, and sandwiches/soups. Lechon Asado with three sides.... basically filling your std 9" styrofoam container with over 2 lbs of food $11. Grouper also with three sides $9.50. Rice with seafood $6 (yes also filling a styrofoam container to the brim). The Lechon Asado was outstanding... add in some black beans and rice and plantains.... very nice. The fish was nicely flavored. The rice with seafood was not spectacular (just good), but the price can't be beat. and just 3 blocks from our hotel. we did not but should have tried the juices.
  9. Never thought I'd see this.... Ray's on OpenTable. I still remember the days of needing to show up in person during the day to make reservations for that evening.....
  10. In the burbs..... perhaps not what most people think of for small plates, but one of the better ones would be A&J - and typically not a wait for weekend dinners (brunch is a completely different situation altogether). not exclusively a small plate restaurant, but Pizzeria Orso has outstanding small plates. in the district, i also think Cork is a good suggestion.... it's been years since I've been there, but Bar Pilar was good. Another possibility is trying to snag bar seats at Rasika (Penn Qtr or West End).
  11. Komi has always been excellent at dealing with the different limitations - once, I went with a couple vegetarians... one of whom was deathly allergic to mushrooms - and they handled that well. after you make the reservation that way, they've also always been very good about asking about it once you're seated so they understand which dishes, particularly the small plates, to which person.
  12. Didn't see a topic for this place. AllSpice Cafe is on Oak Street essentially across the street from the new Heavy Seas Alehouse, kind of on the back side of the building, next door to Kanpai. It's a great little place when you're in the neighborhood. Good sandwiches (I've tended to the wraps like the southwestern wrap or bbq chicken).... mrs. rbh likes the chicken hummus veggie sandwich and swears by their breakfast wraps. They have apple fritters as big as a face - and they have Swings coffee. I've had their soups a couple times and was pleased. Soups and sandwich specials rotate daily. They also have a made-to-order salad station that I have to try sometime. Given the other choices around for take-out sandwiches, I put this over all the walking distance places (capriottis, subway, jimmy johns, etc). Particularly for the price. Basically if I'm working from home and want to wander out for a lunch sandwich, this is the default unless I feel like driving to Italian Store or Earl's. I hope that when the demolition starts on this bldg and the one next door in a couple years that they're able to find a new home.
  13. wow.... I remember my parents taking us here when we were kids in the late 70's/early 80's. back when there weren't a lot of chinese restaurants in the area. I wonder what the kay-bee toy store that used to be there is now.....
  14. thanks to everyone for posting about RW.... we were there yesterday for the great deal. raisab - we tried the grilled watermelon salad. outstanding. we also went back to the grilled octopus. orso and the verdure pizzas. RW got us to try dessert for the first time.... lemon-glazed donuts (my preference).... brownie w/ chocolate gelato (mrs rbh's preference). the 3 year old deviated from the pizza to get the mac and cheese.... which I had to sample and was quite tasty.... they use an orecchiette pasta.
  15. so a trip over memorial day weekend - we went to Olive & Gourmando once for lunch, another time for breakfast. I had the Cuban panini for lunch and the egg breakfast panini for breakfast. Very tasty.... coffee was quite good - but of course the reason to go is the pastries. I've always liked Bonaparte in Old Town.... and this dinner was awesome. We did the tasting menu.... I think it was 5 courses for ~$70CDN with a couple amuses thrown in .... wish I remembered the bottle of white we had (~$60CDN).... it was somewhere between a sancerre and a chenin blanc. The tasting menu is a great value and between the two of us I think we were able to sample almost all the choices. for childhood nostalgia's sake, also had lunch at St Huberts one day. Think we had dinner at three brewers one night also. highly recommend the Hotel San Sulpice in old town. took avantage of the tourism montreal deal (buy 2 nights, get one half off) - and also the hotel's discounted rate at the scandanavian spa down the street.
  16. So we've been here a couple times in the last 2 months with the girls (ages 3 and 1). Have to agree that the kids pizza @$7 is one of the best kids meals around. In our two visits, we've had the grilled octopus, the seared scallops, the butternet squash/lentil salad, and the corn/crab chowder for starters. the grilled octopus very well done... the seared scallops had good flavor.... but the tomato with the risotto that the scallops sat on I could make a meal of. Mrs. RBH really enjoyed the salad and the chowder had a really nice kick to it. Mrs. RBH has gone for the Fun Guy pizza twice... loved it twice.... I had the North Beach one meal and the meatball grinder another. The grinder had good flavor, but I think next visit I'll be back at pizza. I kind of wish the beer selection had more than 4 drafts... but otherwise, we summed this place as a great kid-friendly restaurant (it's loud.... doesn't really matter how loud our kids get as long as they don't crawl over to the next table), but it's really nice to get a step-up in food quality than the typical kid-friendly restaurant. The free underground parking is another great perk, particularly in the rain and with kids in tow.....
  17. XO Taste and Full Kee in Falls Church I think are open until 2am everyday. Don't know about delivery.
  18. one of these is opening up in Rosslyn across Wilson from the Guajillo/Village Bistro/et al shopping Center in the new office building.
  19. thanks for doing this Nizam.... and thanks for coming to Rosslyn. I used to frequent Ben's quite a bit when I lived near Logan Circle.... but then we moved to Rosslyn over 3 years ago and hence my habit went by the wayside. And now you're going to be coming within walking distance again! From a business perspective, how did you decide on an Arlington location, and specifically on the selected storefront? Are you looking for a similar late night crowd as on U Street?
