  1. Did a trial run of Food52 recipe. The dough didn't rise, I'm not sure what happened. I put yeast in warm water and it seemed activated after 15 min. So, grilled it on griddle. About 2 min per side on high heat. It tasted more like a chapati. Didn't look bad. Would have been acceptable, but it wasn't naan.
  2. Only buying them for back up. I gots nothing but time this Saturday.
  3. Not buying a tandoor, bro. Was going to just use this recipe, which one were you thinking k?
  4. Hey - anyone with experience making naan? On skillet or baked? Anyone try grilling? Having a little dinner party and wanted to see if I can make at home rather than buying it. -S
  5. If you're saying $125 in profit by value, Don, that's not that much of a markup. Am I understanding correctly? You're saying $185 pairing, but true value is $60. Isn't 3:1 fairly standard for wine? Or should it be closer to 2:1? I just assumed 3:1 for wine and beer, or worse. Enough $8 glasses of $15 bottle wine for this guy to not care to get wine when out. And, not to be a dick, which obviously means I'm about to be a dick... and though I very much enjoyed the review by Franch, honestly I was predicting a fairly stellar review with a few knocks on it. After all of their support of the restaurant what were they going to say? "You guys were all right, this place sucks?" The review may be accurate, but waiting to hear more reviews. Though a negative review from some that predicted a dismal meal might not be all that useful either, ha.
  6. Just went for lunch. Lot more time in Ho Co, because of new lady friend, but there are some lovely places here. Man, is this place "hole in the wall". Cozy, though. People seemed to be regulars and very comfortable in there. Large round tables mostly, good for large groups and ordering everything. We got what was mentioned very frequently here - fish noodles, crispy eggplant, and tofu pockets in spicy sauce. The fish noodles were really good! Didn't know what to expect. It's ground up fish and shrimp made into noodles. How do you do that?? Also with some ginger and scallions. Delish. The crispy eggplant was fried up crispy and had a General' Tso-ish sauce on it. Very good. Was thinking was going to be like Chang's eggplant, but definitely different. Didn't love the tofu pockets. She doesn't really love tofu, and I was hoping this was one of those tofu dishes that convert people, but not really. Super soft. Sauce was mildly spicy (ha!). Great little place. Saw stuff coming out that I wanted to know more about. Need to come here with at least 2 more people and a big appetite.
  7. The more and more I read about this, the more I find myself sort of rooting for failure. And I hate that. I have that feeling sometimes for some garbage TV shows (The Newsroom - and this is coming from the biggest West Wing and Sports Night fan ever) and movies (the Entourage Movie - from a huge Entourage TV show fan). And in my opinion, both sucked and I had some schadenfreude. I also sort of wanted Sweetbitter to be a bad novel, because of the hype of the hot author, but it was beautiful and I loved it and I'm glad I was wrong. The one problem I'm having, and it's been vaguely mentioned, is what if I'm having this unconscious bias about this because he's this telegenic, photogenic guy that speaks in a way, projects in a way that just makes me recoil. I wonder if I'd feel this way if someone like - I don't know - let's just say the sons of the the guys that run Indique - they have been in the Post repeatedly and I really want them to succeed. I like their story. I'm not in the industry, so maybe the industry folks can settle me down about that - that yes, this is not about that unconscious bias, that it is about what he is saying and how he says it that's the problem. Man, dancing around that ridiculous elephant in the room....
  8. Definitely people get store made paneer in bricks. Most indian stores have them. Most buffets use the store bought stuff. You can tell when they use it. Mom used to cheat with that once in a while, but it just takes some milk and lemon juice and some time to make it. Pretty easy, all things considering with Indian food. In dissent, i had a decent meal there the other night. Chicken vindaloo and another chicken dish. I hardly get paneer dishes out any longer, rarely is it that good.
  9. Maybe like the "third space" that a lot of places try to create (a coffee shop, the local pub)? Maybe it's a fraternity for people no longer in college? I don't know... tough these days with work, friends/family, relationship, trying to be physically active. It seems more fit for a past era when dudes would go to work and then go to the club, b/c they didn't have domestic responsibilities. The good old days. But, it would be kind of nice if they had a gym and a little bar / socializing space.
  10. Do people actually belong to these types of clubs any more? Like George Town Club or Cosmos? Or is it just the super old?
  11. What a story! They were scammers, but instead of crappy front, they actually had a really great business that was loved, a great product. I could see some shitty dry cleaner do this, but to have one of the region's best coffee shops committing fraud... kind of sad, but pretty hilarious.
  12. 1) This place is going to be a failure of Ishtar proportions. Or 2) This place will surprisingly be good. Or 3) We are getting massively punked. Especially, Jonathan My money is on number 3. This cannot be real. Can't wait for the reality show.
  13. Looking forward to brunch here next weekend! But, just wanted to note.. I bought my friend a $200 gift card as wedding gift and then, without knowing or expecting it, got a $25 gift card for Casa Luca. That was very nice!
  14. Got there at about 545p, seated at about 745p. Neat place. Cool drinks/atmosphere. Very loud. Almost communal dining. Luckily, seated next to two guys from Melbourne who were quite charming and funny. Got the chicken liver toast and the pickled herring. I liked them both a lot. Lady friend did not like either. Rutgers Oncologist enjoyed both, though, not as much as me. They split the burger and the skirt steak. The burger was overpowered by the bleu cheese, and neither would put it in the top tiers of burgers that they've had, although it was cooked a legit medium. The skirt steak was enjoyed. I had the squid stew, which was on toast, and brussel sprouts. I liked the squid. Was tender. Not a very detailed review, but honestly, not super impressed with this place. The Gnudi wasn't available, but I would have liked to have tried that. How about a pasta place called "The Gnudi Bar"? I'm hilarious. The skirt steak was $35. The burger was $25. The Gilded Age ... Prior to that, we went to McSorley's. How fun is that place!!
  15. Went last night with one of my "chemo"-sabes and an old friend from USAID who's leaving us for Somalia. Got there at 640p, told between 715-745p, got the magic text at 740p. 3 dishes were oldies but goodies (pork rinds/shrimp paste, pork ribs, chicken/offal larb). 3 ones that were new to me - "het nam tok" (mushroom, rice powder, mint), "yam khamin khao" (white turmeric, cashew, coconut), naem khluk (sour pork, ginger, peanut). There is another dish listed, and I swear that never came "kaeng khiaw waan" (heart of palm, pumpkin, basil), but I could be forgetting, will have to ask dining partners. I love the mushroom dish. Earthy, fresh, delicious. I wasn't looking forward to the turmeric dish because it is a substance that my parents made me eat when I was sick and to this day, I don't react well to it. But, fresh turmeric slices are much different than the horrible yellow powder. Was good, but wouldn't chase after it. Chicken laab is the belle of the ball, now, better than the ribs, in my opinion. I could eat that daily, and never get sick of it. Sour pork was good. I'm forgetting - maybe I did have that before? That's the crispy rice dish. It's got this fermented pork taste to it that's way better than it sounds. Oh, now I remember, the kaeng khiaw waan was the green curry. The server described it as eggplant green curry, so I don't know if they actually use pumpkin or not. Ribs fell off the bone, as usual. Small sticky rice thingie for mini dessert. Not my jam. A few notes ... Food is still amazing, fresh, interesting. Maybe a little less spicy than usual? The turmeric dish and the laab are spicy-ish, but not too much heat on the menu this evening. The green curry was a throwaway dish, take it or leave it. Not a whole lot different than green curries at regular Thai places. The meal is very filling. We were absolutely stuffed. The meal is still a good value - I had 2 beers ($6 each), they each had 1 glass of wine ($12 each), $80 each after tax/tip. Should have got the vermouth as suggested above, but totally forgot. I'm looking back at someone's post from December, and there are four different items compared to this menu, which is pretty incredible for them to try so many new things that end up being hits. Service remains perfect, reminds me of Rose's, excited and enthusiastic and casual without being overbearing. Perfect for me. The only negative, to me, was that the coursing seems different. At one point we had 3-4 dishes on the table at once. I'd rather pace it out, but at the same time, it was Tuesday night and I probably didn't need the opposite to happen where it turns into a 3 hour meal. That's something I noticed happening at Thai X-ing (terrible coursing, everything at once), and once that happened, I just didn't enjoy myself as much. I'm curious to see if this persists or worsens. *** On a side note, usually try to go to Duke's for a drink. Man, they were being difficult. I was solo and waiting, waiting on 2 people so I asked for 3 seats, but they wouldn't give me a seat until everyone was there. Fine. There were plenty of open seats outside, but fine. One of my friends got there, and we assumed the other would probably just meet us at the restaurant since she runs late. So we asked for seats for 2. They needed all of us there. We said it's not 3 any more, it's two. "You can't save a seat for your friend." "We aren't going to." Anyway, about to sit, and she checks in if we are eating or not. "Well, it's getting busy here now, and outside is for dining only." Very annoying altogether. Went to Fox and Hound's, which is sort of great place to get drinks before LS - patio is almost always pretty empty, service is efficient so it's easy to leave when you get the text.
  16. Is Trump the bottomless, black well of human misery, preying on the worst of humanity or Tom? If Tom, that's the harshest criticism I've ever heard about a food critic. But, this forum is no joke. Greek isn't the "right" type of European... Makes no sense to not include Komi. Oh well.
