  1. After reading that, I hope that people don't go there That guy sucks. He couldn't even say sorry. He was sorry for the misrepresentation by the media. Greg Galy sucks. Sorry Don. He sucks. He is welcome to message or email me, if he thinks the personal attack is unfair. This is incredible.
  2. Yay! 50 cent oysters is incredible. Yay for this place. Coffee is incredible (it's swings and they make it well). Good service. Breakfast there had been awesome, I need to try dinner
  3. What's the deal with packaging food for taking home? When I was a kid, it would never be expected that the guest does it - it would come wrapped up. Now, it's about 50/50 - I have to wrap up my own food. It's not okay, but what can we do? Should I say, "no, you need to package this?"
  4. I'm not looking for a cheap meal. I just don't know if this is a good thing that is happening. I will certainly appreciate a cheap meal, and can't wait to try the Banh Mi here, but money is not an issue to me. My concern is that if we live in a world where $7.50 gets you one sardine, $12 gets you a few Brussels sprouts ... Eventually we go back to bad food America. I know I'm creating a huge slippery slope, but I think some food historians may agree with that- that when the middle end becomes too high end, the economic pressure is to create a low end ... And then food and meal quality may turn poor. I don't know. It's just feel at this point. I don't like it. Does anyone have a good justification that Green Pig Bistro and many other places charge $25 for a fried chicken dinner other than it can? *** Food/dining/carousing has become really elitist. Sometimes I go on dates and I love recommending DR to people... But some people read it and are like "you guys are so rich, this doesn't make sense to us". I'm not just saying that, this is what people think. *** (it can- meaning- there is no regulation against it - as there shouldn't be - but they do charge it; and, in the same vein, understanding, that I can charge $250k for a life saving lung cancer treatment, and I don't... Meaning we shouldn't always use the market to justify what we do; also, meaning if you're sick with cancer and poor come to me, I'll take care of you)
  5. After reading past posts, I can see why people don't like this Jeff Black character. I would love for him to report his wages of people that actually make the food.
  6. But I shouldn't feel bad at all if I complain about this. You're telling me that the waitstaff make $75-150k annually? If we live in a world that the people serving the food should make that sort of money, but the people making it are making $12-15/hr, maybe sometimes more, but nowhere near $75-150k annually, that anyone ... that we should be okay with that? His pride of saying that ... I don't even know what to make of it. Teachers don't make that per annum. My nurses don't make that (don't blame me, I'm a private practice doc, a hospital conglomerate pays them). Ugh. Fine. Maybe they don't need a raise. But there is something absolutely disgusting going on if a waiter makes $150k, and the gal in the back is getting $15-20/hr (as posted on many job sites).
  7. I made a typo and it ruined my point I meant BOH staff I won't correct it in original post. But, that's what I meant. I know FOH are making pharmacist money, and sometimes pediatrician money, and sometimes even medical specialist money... I meant BOH.
  8. 7.50 for a sardine. Wow. We are in the gilded age. How do non rich people eat out these days at nicer places? $12 for 6 Brussels sprouts. $25 for fried chicken plates. $18 for ramen. And the FOHBOH staff barely makes a living wage?? Wow, again. The price of dinner at a decent place continues to go up, wages are stagnant or falling, and it's $7.50 a sardine... Couldn't make this up if you tried...
  9. I liked it last time... Old school Alexandria. They will make a puttanesca sauce if you ask
  10. Interesting... Wonder if you can't trust major companies, or if you just can't trust any restaurants. Who knows what ingredients and products anyone is using ???
  11. Really dumb question. Soft g ('jib-ellina') or hard g? I've heard both ways, but more commonly hard g.
  12. Is this a value judgement? How does one evaluate value? How does a chef/restauranteur create value? Why is his pork-habanero-lychee salad a sensation at its price? Why is Rasika's palak chaat a sensation at its price? $19 for a brisket sandwich? Well, you weren't supposed to take it home. Maybe it would have been $10 at a nice deli. Maybe comfort food has a role at "high-ish" end restaurants. Maybe not. Rose's seem to be taking a (light) jab, but they aren't even asking for it by being obnoxious or hoighty toighty. I'm paying $7-9 for every Brussels sprouts appetizer in town now ($11 at Red Hen!!) I'm paying $5 for Natty Boh cans at these places. I'm paying $18 for lobster mac and cheese at run of the mill restaurants. It's really unfair to single out this place. Don just paid $15 to go to Don Tito's for excrement. Red Hen is awesome, too, but as far as value ... Come on! Everyone is jacking up the prices. Both of those places are still better than many of the other "fine dining" places in town.
  13. Love the map! People should have those for other items, very handy! Add "Streets Market" off Mt. Vernon in Del Ray. Had it the other night. Details later. Toki is gold standard of 10 for me. Daikaya 8. This was a 4-5 (only tried pork).
  14. Any updates on best chicken parm/sandwich form? I think it's one of my favorites. Have had really good ones in NJ/NY, but don't really have any go to place in DMV, other than a place by work that's pretty good.
  15. You've had quite a few negative experiences recently. Perhaps restaurants heard about your health pledge, and want you to be healthier by driving you out of restaurants. It's actually a public health initiative. A baller one, I might add. Restaurants of the DMV- keep serving Don badly. He may reduce his risk of DM, CAD, and ED... Here here !!
  16. Sounds amazing, and will have to try it soon... Been hoping we'd get a reasonable BM place, seeing that we have so many options that are kind of lame currently. Looked it up on Yelp just to get pictures, and I read a review that reminds me of why Yelp is a horrible community... It's from July 1, 2015 from Huy T, and clearly a competitor. I'm not adding a link, as to not wanting to give them any traffic, but it includes this charmer: "And this...MY FRIEND HAS A DIARRHEA RIGHT AFTER WE ATE. Im sorry. But i will never step in this bakery again. Unless i have the need to visit the bathroom right away."
  17. The new market in the north part of Del Ray just opened (a small regional chain, I guess), and I went in this morning to check out the scene. First glance, it's a typical small, yuppie market with a small amount of good looking produce, limited meats, but has the other staples (canned goods, cereal, soups, condiments, baking stuff, etc.), as well as a good amount of fair priced to expensive wine. They have a small beer area, a deli counter, a baked goods counter. It's expensive, but not that crazy ($2.99 for a gallon of milk, but the produce is pretty pricey). The most interesting part to me was the cafe/restaurant/bar area. It's adjacent to the deli, and pretty cool - looks warehousey/loft style with a long bar, seats there, and tables. The menu had ... korean fried chicken made to order, three different types of ramen (I think shoyu, miso, and something else), and then various small plates. How strange! It wasn't lunch time yet, so they weren't serving, but I'm certainly interested in trying it. If there is halfway decent Korean fried chicken and ramen walking distance from my house, I may have to reconsider my feelings about a higher power. Curious to see how it will do, location is in those new apartment buildings on Mt. Vernon, north of Hume but south of San Salvador.
  18. I don't get this place, maybe I just don't understand it. Are these types of places supposed to be super expensive? I go here, spend $70 and I'm still hungry. I always think of these places being New England-y or Pac-Northwest-y - is it normal to pay this much for dinner at an oyster house? It's not like it's fancy or they are doing anything interesting. It's cold shellfish ($12), a salad ($14), a lobster roll ($25), two of their cheapest draft beers ($14). And I'm out $65 before tax and tip, that gets you close $80. Even if you skip the salad, about $65. Quick comparison to Senart's. $12 for their fried oyster starter, $15 for Hank's. $13 for their fried oyster sandwich, $22 at Hank's. Maybe I'm not comparing apples to apples. Or, oysters to oysters... I'm usually just a positive reviewer, and keep my negative experiences to myself (I know, dishonest, but I'm nervous about hurting someone's business if I'm not offering any constructive criticism). I like oysters and seafood, and don't have many options in Old Town, so I go here, but I feel a lot better about it at happy hour or after 10pm.
  19. This place continues to make no concessions to nervous nellie eaters! On the menu last night was more organ meat, alligator laab, fried duck heads. The one new thing I had was a snake head fish with smoked eggplant in a herbal, thin brown sauce, lemongrass-y, and delicious. There was a noodle dish with pork belly on the happy hour menu with dried shrimp and chili paste that basically tasted like papaya salad, but with noodles instead of papaya. It was awesome, but ridiculously spicy, and I couldn't eat too much of it. But, they warned us ... I have not eaten at a table in a while, because the first two times I came it was a total cluster, everything shows up at once, or gets delayed, or comes in some strange order. I WANT MY PORK NECKS BEFORE THE ENTREE, BRO!! I've mitigated this by just eating at the bar, and it works a lot better. The bartenders are better able to pace things out, and not constantly asking what you want. The happy hour includes $5 Old Fashioned, and Jack does a great job with them, at least from what I noted (my date had 2 and really liked it). He has a PhD in Art History from Columbia, so if you want to learn something about art, he's your man. The Beer Lao is $3 at happy hour. They also have a version infused liquors, he called it "Southeast Asian Amaro" at the top of the bar. Didn't try, but I would like to next time. The place was ridiculously busy last night. Packed from 545p til after 830, pretty much every bar seat and table. It seems to be beloved. Good for Chef Seng!
  20. Pretty great show. A millennial's take on the first generation immigrant experience, casual racism, feminism, relationships, life in New York. I liked it, and could relate a lot to it. He wrote an article in the Times yesterday about learning that the guy that played the Indian guy in Short Circuit was actually a white dude in brown face. I don't think I've seen a niche comedy show get overwhelming reviews from virtually every site. It's on Netflix. Easy weekend binge... NY Times Vox Slate Washington Post Huffington Post Vanity Fair Daiily Beast The Verge Vulture
  21. Underwhelming event. Boring debate. A lot of young people. Although, the pizza at Cap Lounge hits the spot. And buffalo chicken dip is really good, too. They didn't do wing night, even though it was a Tuesday, so instead of 25 cents, they were about 83 cents.
  22. Thanks! I registered. Pin a Toupee On Trump game! That's good stuff.
