  1. Ris is also an option for "restaurants near the Kennedy Center."
  2. Mr. S doesn't usually like meals that are trying to mimic the real thing, but in trying to eat "healthier" he often will try a veggie burger. That being said, it is his burger of choice at Counter Burger. I've heard others say that their veggie burger is exceptional as well.
  3. Yes, they are called Bao. Char Siu Bao is the one with Char Siu (bbq pork) in it. Bao comes in both steamed and baked versions. Please post your recipe venture and how they turn out!
  4. Thank you for the updates. Iron Gate's "tasting menu only" will not be a good option for my parent's anniversary, so we've made other plans. I'm sending them to Fiola Mare instead.
  5. Of course! I've been wanting to try your restaurant for some time. And if not for the Anniversary, then my Mom's birthday is at the end of February!
  6. I think for when the family takes them out this will be a good option. For their actual day of, I've consulted with them and am sending them to Fiola Mare.
  7. Thanks for the pics Don-I'll mention it to my parents and see what they think. If you recall, they are big fans of Nova Europa.
  8. How would you describe the atmosphere of the restaurant? My parent's want something different to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary...and it needs to be someplace that they wouldn't normally frequent. My father mentioned Iron Gate, but since it's only a tasting menu I think that is not a good option. I have never been to Grapeseed but Daniel's love for the restaurant put it on my radar for this event. I'm not getting a whole lot of info from the website to help me, unfortunately.
  9. Well I hadn't experienced the severe slowdown previously, but I am now. I don't know if it is the wifi that I am on that is painfully slow, or if something else is up. Other web pages do load, sometimes slowly, but DR pages keep timing out.
  10. I was just doing a very similar thing today, 8 times over, plus with a few more complicated steps. Took about 10 hours. My project also involved Gmail. While I came through it, hopefully, pretty successfully, I don't think I'd be the one to handle the whole thing without someone else's guidance. I am not IT by any means, but have just enough knowledge to get through. So if you do need some input I'd be happy to contribute, as I did learn some valuable steps in how to do our move. We just moved to Hostgator--hope that won't be a mistake as I hadn't heard much about them. So glad we decided against Dreamhost though, based on what you've posted!
  11. That makes sense about the name confusion. Sad to hear it was sold. Hopefully they still have the expertise and value of the old store. Any reason to not check them out or are they along the lines of Bray & Scarff now?
  12. We bought our Miele from Candey's Hardware when they were still downtown. (That tells you how long we have had it!) No longer downtown, but same owners, I believe. They are now in Alexandria. Eric was really great, and they did their own installation. We moved it with us from our prior house 10 years ago and it is still going strong. We got a model with not a lot of bells and whistles-it was the lowest model that still had the heated dryer. So no problems for us. And we love, love, love the top shelf for utensils. My guess is that it is a love it or hate it feature, but also might be one that a person could learn to love if using it. Kind of like the "which side" debate of where to put the dishwasher. I see that Candey's carries many brands, so I would recommend checking them out. And I don't recall if the spelling was Candy's or Candey's, but I've seen both spellings and it seems they go by the "no e" spelling here.
  13. Those look awesome! Great call on the pretzel, too. One of my go to snacks is by Skinny Cow-it's an ice cream bar with a topping of caramel and pretzel, covered in chocolate.
  14. Mark Furstenburg's Tribute to Mark Kuller Very sorry to hear of Mark Kuller's passing. Prayers to his family and friends.
  15. MC, I feel for you. My husband and I had been celebrating our Anniversary every year at Palena. Our Anniversary has been one of the few times a year we would be able to dine out at a truly special occasion restaurant. So this year where are we going? To CityZen! I'm quite beside myself with excitement. I wasn't sure I would ever be able to dine here with all my allergies, since the menu changes daily. But I just found out that we will be able to do so. I am very much looking forward to Friday night, to say the least. We rarely make the exception to dine on a day that is not our actual Anniversary (it's Saturday) but we really try not to drive all the way downtown on a weekend when we're there all week. I had made a reservation at DBGB when they opened and I wasn't sure I'd keep the reservation since they are so new and the kinks are still being worked out, but didn't have a backup. And I did not have the best experience dealing with the staff in preparation for dining there. Palena was really the kind of special occasion restaurant that was perfect for our celebration. With so many allergies, special meals out where my restrictions can be accommodated are few and far betweevn, and Palena even had a copy of my allergy list on file. Needless to say I felt at ease and well taken care of dining there. As I was feeling uneasy about our res at DBGB I decided with the impending move of Chef Ziebold and delay in his opening his own restaurant, maybe I should ask if they could accommodate me. I usually give more time to reach out to a restuarant but thought at least it was worth a shot. And wow, the experience in my dealings thus far with CityZen has been a complete 180 from DBGB. The person I spoke with on the phone was excellent, and the Chef offered to speak with me directly about the menu. The service thus far is definitely on par with our past experiences at Palena. I'm sure the food will be excellent as well. Now what are we going to do next year?! (besides hoping for Chef to have his own restaurant open by then...) ETA-I know Don is good friends with the Chef, but CityZen had no knowledge of my being a member of DR.com.
  16. I think tomatoes are too acidic to be easy on the stomach, even in a soup. You can roast and freeze them, and also make a vinegr/oil/herb salad that will taste better in a few days when hopefully you'll be feeling better!
  17. Wow-that recipe has a lot of carbs! Not just the sugar, but the berries and pomegranate juice! Have you tried adding nuts to your gelatin? You could also add mandarin oranges or apples or grapes, to a sugar free jello. One of my creations for a tasty drink is Crystal Light Mojito-it's very good mixed with Sprite Zero, if you are drinking any soda. The other flavors just don't appeal to me. Also try seltzer water with a splash of juice in it (for instance Naked Juice's Mighty Mango, or a splash of pomegranate juice) It's also funny that you are able to eat peas, as those are also high in starch.
  18. For an office holiday party, is that price point workable? There are plenty of places nearby, but most are closer to the $50pp-range. I'll take any and all ideas for a lower cost venue, and any input on holiday parties in that area. Location is to be walkable from between 14th/15th and L. She's going to see what price point Old Ebbitt comes in, and probably check on: 14K Siroc Catch 15 Lincoln PJ Clarke's Mio? Zentan? Thanks!
  19. Interesting that you are able to eat cooked carrots, as they are very high in sugars/carbs. It's one of the veggies that are low carb raw but high carb cooked. I guess there is still enough fiber in it when cooked. Your nutritionist sounds quite unhelpful; if you are still looking for some help, I would direct you to the ADA for a referral. From what I've read on Gestational Diabetes, the diet is supposed to be whole grain, fruits and veggies but not no carb. Low glycemic is best. Have you tried spaghetti squash yet? Also, celery for a change from the cukes, and don't forget peanut butter on the celery as a great snack!
  20. I had a bunch of tomatoes needing to be used rather quickly, but did not have time to go to the store and it needed to be easy to be made on a weeknight. So I used roasted walnut oil, white wine vinegar, salt, sugar, touch of oregano and fresh basil. Pretty much a standard marinade, but the roasted walnut oil really added a unique and tasty flavor.
