  1. http://www.bubandpops.com/Home_Page.php I hadn't realized this spot opened in February. I had the chance to drop in for a quick bite last month and was pleased...though I don't want to go too often as the kettle chips are very tempting and quite good. The day I stopped in I had a Turkey sub, and I loved it as it was shaved thinly, and roasted fresh. Wisely they have the chips on the counter for samples. Wise for them, unwise for me! I bought them and immediately put them in the kitchen when I returned to work so others would eat the majority. It is a family run operation, and it shows. They are extremely friendly and will chat with you if they are slow and you have the time. Nice to have a non-chain, family restaurant in the franchise-heavy golden triangle. Mr. S went on a different day and tried the brisket and said it was delicious. The menu has lots of appealing items, but almost all are off limits for me due to allergies. I do hope others will go and report back on the rest of the menu as I think this type of place can easily be missed. (like all their home-made pickles and roast pork sammies) It's in an English Basement and difficult to see from the road. They're also aiming to catch the late-night crowd as they are open 'til 3am.
  2. A plea... ...as no one but me is ordering rice and they are having to end up throwing it out at the end of the night! Please someone else try the rice so they don't discontinue it. If they do, there go my great dinners!
  3. Golden Triangle: Pret (19th &L) needs p/w and I think it is printed on the receipt. Also pulls wifi from Corner Bakery next door so if one won't connect the other will. Corner Bakery (19th & L) no p/w, just need to "accept" terms Taylor Gourmet- needs p/w-I think it is printed on the receipt FrozenYo (19th & M) -uses AT&T wifi from the McD's next door That's all I can think of at the moment...
  4. Has anyone else been? I love this place. I find that I need to order selectively at any lunch place in the area to keep the cost close to $10. That being said, I have been eating here almost every day! There are ways to order at any establishment that will keep the costs down. Usually adding sides are what will get you, unless you "energize" your meal. By getting a burger, and adding fries and drink, you do save $. Note also that if you are a loyalty member once you earn 100 points, you get a $10 credit. I've already reached that level And as much as I really love the Turkey burger here, (It's quite juicy and very tasty) I've become addicted to the chipotle sweet potato soup. With a bit of spice and sweetness,it is thick and delicious. I have it topped with fat free cheddar for some added protein. It's quite filling, and sometimes I'll get collard greens from one of the hot food bars nearby to mix in and extend the soup even more. My newest addiction, however is from a bit of creative ordering. They have brown rice as a side, and I order the Bison Cheesesteak wrap, and ask them to substitue the rice for the wrap. They put the rice in a bowl and chop the bison burger a bit smaller than when it is in the wrap. The onion and peppers just add a great flavor and It is sooo good. It's filling and no sides are necessary so it is under $10. I've also ordered it and subbed turkey for the bison, which works as well. I can't comment on the smoothies as they have soy in them (off limits for me) but most everything else I've had is top notch. The breakfast is a little odd however. They use 5 egg whites which makes for a huge unweildly amount on a roll, or even in a wrap. They also offer 3 egg whites, but it's still a bit large. My solution? I've ordered the egg whites on rice for breakfast, and instead of a "formed" egg (think McD's) I ask them to make it like an omelet. Now that was a winner.
  5. What a treat it was to dine here on Sunday afternoon. On a whim, with a groupon expiring early next month, we decided to divert from our errands and give Freddy's a try. Sunday was a beautiful day, and it was the perfect day to sit at the window counter fully opened to the outdoors. This was our first visit--I was hoping to bring my Dad here for his bday in May, but was trying to figure how we could do that since it did not appear as if anything on the menu would appeal to my Mom or sister. We were mistaken in thinking most of the food was "fried" and a limited menu means not a good selection when the extended family dines out. We were pleasantly proven wrong, however. I can see my Mom happy to order the mussels, salad or lobster. And my sister who doesn't eat shellfish could easily order the haddock or other fish sandwich. Mr. S had a very fresh Haddock sandwich and I had a very tasty arugula, fennel and parmesan salad topped with lobster. Had we planned in advance, we would have shared a cider (on tap!) but we'll have to plan for that next time. The beer selection is quite good as well. The shoestring fries were difficult to resist-perfect, with no grease at all. Hopefully we can plan a trip soon with friends to have the opportunity to try some more menu items when there are more of us dining to share "tastes." And I'm looking forward to letting my Dad know he can get whole belly clams for his birthday!
  6. Upddate...our extra BGE is spoken for, but not yet delivered (with a waiting list). Just wanted to let others know that it's no longer available..
  7. We'll be in MPLS next month for my niece's graduation from the U. Just for a few days, with a family dinner already planned at the Red Stag Supper Club. Anyone have any word on it? We usually stay in the West End (St. Louis Park) but got a deal on a hotel downtown for the first time. So this is fairly new territory for us! We may be within walking distance of Hell's Kitchen, and the bakery above it (Angel Food Bakery + Coffee Bar) sounds to die for as well. (Sorry, couldn't help it) Angel Food Bakery was recently called out with one of the best donuts in the city by the Star Tribune: The maple-bacon Long John. I can tell you right now if I'm nearby, the diet is going right out the window! (check out the link for a photo, unless you don't want drool on your keyboard)
  8. We find ourselves with an extra BGE, inherited from family when they moved. We really don't have a use for two. Seriously, if anyone is interested in a BGE pm me and we can talk! And Mr. S just bought that plate accessory thing online a few days ago. It hasn't arrived yet though, so can't comment on its use. I hadn't even heard of it before--how funny to read about it here just after he ordered it! ETA-it hasn't been ordered yet, I am informed. Now he's looking at a contraption at the Ceramic Grill Store (online) instead. Oy. I can't keep up!
  9. Here you go Scott- I look forward to seeing your posts on April 1st...it's an annual rite of Spring. Might as well keep the historical context together! (And for once it seems I have mastered the Google search function. ) 2011-- http://www.donrockwell.com/index.php?/topic/16121-another-important-annoucement/#entry185338
  10. The tasty Pho truck, whose line was too long for me to stand in today is PhoJunkies. And admittedly, I am one. So I went to the one next to it, Where Sauca, and had a nice chicken quesadilla. Maybe this new L Street phenomenon can be attributed to trucks trying to find other locations to park than the "squares."
  11. Thanks for finding this! I saw it in my email yesterday but when I went to post I could not locate it. I didn't want to speak without knowing all the details so was going to look for the info this weekend. The Post also has something in the Weekend section in Tim Carman's $20 finds about the upcoming regulations and how it may shut down quite a few trucks. While I understand trying to find a good balance for the brick and mortar and the food trucks, it just seems like DC Govt is being a little too restrictive. And a big thank you to whomever updated the thread title.
  12. I had a heckuva time trying to find this thread! Why is it labeled Food carts? Who thinks of "cart" when they are doing a search? Obviously not me And the DR search actually finally came thru over google. Anyhow, just wanted to share that a new food truck was spotted today at 20th and L called Capital Chicken and Waffles. I wasn't able to try their chicken, but the banana pudding was pretty darn tasty. A nice size to bring home for dessert tho' pricey at $6+ change. I actually got some chicken from the NY Deli around the corner that I know I can eat (w/o garlic) and bought a waffle to put it on. The waffles were fine; as one would expect they will get a bit soft if you have to walk too far from the truck. But my own creation with their honey mustard was pretty spot on. They also have Turkey Chilli and coming soon, mac and cheese. And there was a Cheesesteak truck there as well--BLB I'm wondering if this is the dreadful one you had or not? It was called Cheesequake...difficult to tell if it is any good or not but it seemed a bit disorganized. Before noon and it appeared they were cooking to order as the line was NOT moving. Thankfullly, we are getting a lot more trucks gathering in this area of late. Thursday seems to be the day when the most are at 20th and L. Fridays there's always a line at the Pho truck. Better get there early tomorrow...
  13. Sorry I don't have time for a long reply, but suffice it to say feel free to contact me. If I have time after work I can post a more thoughtful response... I am a T1 since the age of 9, coming up on 43 years. I am on a pump and I have several food allergies that did not present until the last 6-7 yrs. Am always open to meet up for lunch or coffee to discuss.
  14. I don't regret doing wood at all and love the look. Though make sure to get the kind where the planks butt directly up against each other. with no bevel. Our previous house had the bevel and yes, flour does get caught in those grooves! Different types and humidity will all be factors in how much the wood expands but a good product and installer will be able to steer you right in that regard. (I know someone if you need a rec) We don't have a cat fountain (yet) but we do have the food and water bowls contained within a boot tray, just in case one of the cats decides to be messy DW in our previous house was to the right and I did not like it at all. (I am right handed) When we remodeled our current kitchen we put it on the left of the sink. Frivolity to me as well, but that is because we have warming lights over our stove. Even if we didn't I don't think I would use it except as a storage drawer. If you've read the comments then you know I'm partial to and very happy with our BlueStar. If you have time, it's definitely worth taking a trip up to the factory in PA. We had purchased something that was on sale at Sears (who could turn up a closeout for $500) and are very interested to hear what preferences others have--dreaming of replacing it some day... Keep us posted!
  15. I do know that the New Orleans Po' Boy shop is closed today. Haven't ventured out yet myself to see what is open/closed in my neck of the woods. (Golden Triangle)
  16. So here's a question--how does it compare if the aim is to hit the market that normally buys grocery or Starbucks coffee? I do tend to think of Mayorga as more of a competitor in that regard, and not of as a high-end coffee roaster. Could it be that ME Swing is also going for this market? Just trying to expand the focus. I don't drink coffee enough to buy fresh beans (because they will be put in the freezer and not be fresh anymore!) But I do want the best I can get for my situation. And since I drink decaf, I've found that I am particular to beans from Peru. I haven't had ME Swing's coffee but I have had Mayorga coffee, and I have tasted the decaf sold at MOM's and liked that as well. Again, I like it for my Sunday morning coffee drinking, and not for the "best of the best" standard. If there were a local custom roaster/brewer close to my home or office, I may have a different view. But I already go to 3 or 4 different stores to get the groceries I buy and wish there was something nearby that would change my mind. (I get the Mayorga when they do the road shows at Costco)
  17. Is there any relation to this restaurant in Minneapolis? (link) We are searching for a place for a graduation meal (in Mpls) and Fireplace Grill was mentioned as a possibility. Someone in MN said they heard it was opening in Bethesda. Doesn't look like they are affiliated to me, but one never knows...
  18. Well Mr S says that the guava used in the chiffon pie should be a puree--with no sugar added. And the frozen pulp, as well as the paste we bought, both have extra sugar added. So much for that! But I still want the recipe!
  19. Recipe please!!! I am sooo craving this--kind of convoluted story here. We were at Global Market in Gaithersburg yesterday and I was hankerin' for some Hamentashen, but I am allergic to stone fruits so I was thinking guava would be good in them. So we bought "guava paste" and will see if that works out. But buying that got me dreaming of the guava chiffon pie and wondering if the paste could be used for it. And then I was trying to think where I could find a recipe for it.... (and might you have a good recipe for sweet potato/haupia pie as well?)
  20. Big thanks from our group as well. Insanely generous of our tour guide to not only do one tour, but several hours in back to back tours. And taking up the majority of her free time on a Saturday. Lots of great information and as always, great company.
  21. My calendar shows Feb 23 and March 2nd as Saturdays....but if it is the Sunday of the same weekend, then I think I prefer March 3rd.
  22. Thanks to Daniel for hosting the event! I was there as well, and was really surprised. Some of the ones I rated lower because they literally had no flavor. I must note that we were testing only plain bagels and I am of the mind that while a plain bagel may not have flavor, another variety may. I thought Bethesda and Gtwn bagels were quite middling because of their lack of flavor. And so many people love these bagels that it must be the type of bagel that makes the difference. I rated The Bagelry and Main Street the highest, with Ize's not too far behind. I've been to Goldbergs in the past and was not impressed, but as it wasn't in a tasting, I would be interested in the comparison. I also saw on the WaPo website that there is a bagel place in College Park that is supposed to be very good. I would suggest keeping the top tier ones we did this time but expanding the tasting with Goldbergs, maybe Shalom or Kosher Pantry (whatever place has bagels in Kemp Mill) and def the one in College Park. No need to repeat the supermarket ones since we easily determined these were the bottom of the barrel.
  23. I know people probably prefer suburbs, but the Dupont Circle location is really not far from the Metro. And probably a hike for both MD and VA diners.
