  1. I went to undergrad in Rochester, NY and a lot of people up there religiously dipped their pizza slices in blue cheese dressing. I thought it was gross when I first heard about it, but then tried it and it actually was pretty good.
  2. I had a great lunch (even better then Ceiba yesterday) at Vidalia today. I am surprised that here hasn't been more talk of it on this topic. The whole menu is available with a few items supplemented anywhere from $3 for a couple of appetizers and desserts to $12 for three crab cakes. I started with the five onion soup which was made with a duck stock and had caramelized onions, Napa cabbage, duck confit and shiitake mushrooms accompanied by a sweet onion-cheddar crisp. Despite it being hot out this soup sounded so good to me that I had to order it and it did not disappoint (it was a $3 supp) Then I had the steak salad which contained seared prime beef (medium-rare) with ragout of wild mushrooms, summer vegetables, spinach, red onions, blue cheese and red wine-creole mustard vinaigrette. The beef was extremely tender and flavorful as were the wild mushrooms. Only gripe was that one of the slices was too fatty for my taste. My friend had a salad with goat cheese and the shrimp and grits which she enjoyed. We both had the trio of sorbets for desert. They were lemon, guava and blackberry and were a nice light end to a great meal. Service was excellent as well. I hope some of you all will get to Vidalia this week. It is well worth the RW promotion.
  3. Had lunch yesterday at Ceiba for RW. Had the option of any soup or salad or a shrimp cocktail for starters; any entree on the menu and a choice of chocolate cake, flan or a key lime panna cotta for desert. I had an excellent Golden Tomato Gazpacho with Peekytoe Crab Ceviche and a Vine-Ripe Tomato Sorbet. For my entree I choose the Grilled Barbeque Salmon Manchego Cheese, Mexican "Caesar Salad" Taco. The salmon was good but nothing remarkable. The ceasar salad taco was an interesting accompaniment; it was very flavorful but difficult to eat without making a mess. I panna cotta was nice in that it was not so sweet and you could really taste the flavors of the key lime. Overall it was a very positive experience highlighted by the many options that were available to choose from. My one RW gripe is that too many restaurants limit the selections to 2-3 choices per course. Today I am off to Vidalia.
  4. Someone mentioned that Firefly was participating in RW, but I didnt seem to think so and I checked both opentable and the RW website and didn't see them on it. Does anyone know for sure?
  5. Some gingerbread like biscuits called biscoffs that they gave out on an early morning Airtran flight.
  6. Don't you work for BlackSalt? Maybe you should have informed us on the board that the restaurant got one as Dean did so there would have been no misunderstanding. I appreciate Dean taking the time to inform us of the progression on Dino.
  7. You might want to check out A. Litteri in NE DC or Cornucopia on Norfolk Ave in Bethesda if the Italian Store does not have it.
  8. Dean-- I was in last night and had the prosciutto. Was the had-cranked slicer in use yet? It was very good, btw.
  9. Cornucopia is actually on Norfolk Ave in Bethesda. I went in a couple of months ago and the owner(who's name slips my mind) told me the slicers name was Francesca.
  10. I actually just heard that the whole establishment is shutting down. Hate to say it, but no big loss in my opinion if this is indeed the case.
  11. I actually had great service both times I have been there. In fact, one time my girlfriend was thinking about ordering a vegetarian dish that consisted on gnocchi over a pumpkin puree and the waitress told her not to. She didn't listen and she regretted it.
  12. If you had to pick a wine shop (this goes for price, selection, customer service and storage quality) in the greater DC area, which would it be? I have most consistently gone to CW over the past couple of years with visits Magruders, Schneiders of Cap Hill, CC Wine & Spirits, Pearson's & Circle. I found the Magruders to have good prices on certain bottles (i.e. Allegrini Palazzo della Torre for $14.99) but not very good customer service. CW has nice a Bordeaux and Burgandy selection and good weekly deals, but it gets so cramped there sometimes. Pearsons has a very friendly and knowledgeable staff, but their prices are very high. CC Wine & Spirits has some occasional good deals in their Monday Post ads, but the store always seems dirty to me. I have not been to Wide World of Wines, but have heard good things about them...especially their Champagnes.
  13. If Heroin consists of liquid lobster something or other
  14. I was thinking of a squirt or two of something from a syringe would sound good.
  15. Reeves is on G between 13th and 14th street. It is somewhat of a DC institution that has been around forever. I ordered a cake for a birthday last year and it was quite good.
  16. I would highly recommend Mama's on the Half Shell. Excellent seafood at reasonable prices. BBQ'd oysters, scallops and softshells over fired green tomatoes were all winners when we ate there. Pazo, is good but has had inconsistencies lately. Last time I was there I was served a white wine from Campania (the name escapes me) that was not chilled in the least. When I informed the server of this, she told me that "people in the Mediterranean drink there whites warmer and reds colder." Well I know this wine was not supposed to be served at the same temperature as a California cab. Brewers Art is also very nice, great selection of house beers and good food to match. I noticed that Chef Ravi has left and that his #2 guy is running the kitchen now. I am sure the place won't skip a beat though.
  17. Anyone know if the P street Whole foods got anymore cases in over the weekend?
  18. That is great stuff. I haven't seen it in a DC wine store yet.(has anyone?) Although I did pick up a few bottles of it at the Wine Source in the Hampden area of Baltimore
  19. Stopped by Matchbox tonight before seeing Clemens make the Nationals look like a little league team. Started with an order of three miniburgers which, overall, were excellent. The only complaint that I had with them was that they were cooked past the medium rare temperature that they are described as being served at. Also ordered was a bistro salad that had greens and frisee, with fresh pears, warm goat cheese croutons in a basil vinaigrette. I didn't try it but it looked good. We then split a portabella pizza which had sliced portabella, marinated artichoke, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil & mozzarella. It had a nice crispy thin crust and was quite good, but to me it had a little too much cheese. Personally I prefer a pizza that does not have a lot of cheese on it, much like 2 Amy's. Also of note is the excellent selection of draft beers at Matchbox. I had a couple of Magic Hat No. 9's. Also on tap is Chimay, a Dogfish Head IPA, Anchor Steam lager, Rogue Shakespeare stout and Allagash White ale just to name a few.
  20. Thanks, i just realized I scrolled right past mdt & JPW's posts. Sounds good, I am going to have to check this out tomorrow.
  21. Has anyone been to the HH at Circle Bistro recently? Saw it on the website and was thinking about checking it out.
  22. I agree with Sietsema that the whole no desert issue needs to be addressed. Personally, it does not bother me as I am not a big desert eater, but having to get up and go somewhere else to finish a meal is a can be an annoyance.
